What a day that was...
After a causal start at 7.10 we made our way to the head of Lake Lyndon. When ready we took the curling ridge up to the summit before traversing the length to Red Hill in 2.30hrs. This was the last of our fast progress as we descended towards the stream below.
We did an awesome scree run before hitting the scrub and getting stuck for a while in Roel's Forest. Eventually we made it out and down the track past the tank to the road.
With a choice between taking a track with 2km extra or going around a swamp, we chose badly by taking the swamp and lost a lot of time. However, Joel's extra height enabled him to spot a track through the scrub and down to the river so after a bit of backtrack we made it across and towards the second big climb of the day.
This was where I had a low point on the climb as it took a long time and the sun was well and truly out. Upon making the first summit, we attempted to eat a Summit Bar but were unable to do so (those things are disgusting) and Joel found a walking pole. Continuing along the ridge we went over Benmore and further along to the highest point where the ceram eggs went down a treat. We then went down the next ridge where the fine weather that we had been enjoying all day stopped and the cloud rolled in. This made the experience of navigating down to Rabbit Saddle more fun but we made it none the less. I then discovered a hunting jacket on the saddle and carried it out, sadly this jacket was both named and smelt badly of dog so it shall be returned to its rightful owner. With only Rabbit Hill as our final obstacle we ascended it and took another ridge back down to the road in 15-20m visibility. With a quick walk to stretch the legs, we were soon jogging back to the head of Lyndon and the car ride back to town.
All in all, it was a great day in the mountains and we had a lot of laughs along the way.
