Orienteering race (brown day 2) 1:03:44 [4] *** 4.1 km (15:33 / km) +165m 12:56 / km
spiked:9/12c shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Brown day 2 at Mt. Tom. Course was all south of Reservation Road, and the weather was just perfect, mid-50's and sunny/clear.

Allmuth P. started 2 minutes behind me, and caught me on the way to 1 (as I bobbled on the way, needlessly checking another hill along the way after noting a flag on it--it was 100 m early). I couldn't shake her until 7, and having her right there with me most of the way probably pushed me to move faster through the woods. Sloppy on 3, correcting from a cliff area W of knoll, about 1:20 lost.

Finally, on 7, knowing Allmuth was on my heels distracted me so much I didn't have a plan and was way left of the line. I overshot, crossing 2 streams apparently that I shouldn't have crossed, but noted on the way that Judy D., also on Brown, had crossed my path right to left. Once I decided I wasn't where I was supposed to be, I looped back in the direction Judy had come from, until things started matching up again. Luckily for me (but not Allmuth, still following -- couldn't she tell we weren't anywhere near the line?), I came up on the correct side of the hill/knoll and punched, while she was on the opposite side and never saw the flag. Time lost, about 5 minutes. Then I headed out to 8. Allmuth was not far behind, until I punched at the boulder. Then she must have realized I'd already been to 7 and she had to go back and find it (finally, I could navigate without being distracted).

No problems with the last few controls, which required contouring across the hillside (but there were trails to work off).

The best thing, even with 8+ minutes of error, was that I had the fastest time on the course today (George ran Green instead of Brown today, or he would been fastest overall, I'm sure). Finished 5th overall for the weekend on the course, 1st F55 (of 5; Mary Jo and Judy ran Green, too).

Very nice course by Jeff S. Thanks to NEOC for a great weekend event!

FR 4.85k, SportTracks 5.17, avg. 5 km.
