Hiking hills (rogaine training :-)) 3:45:40 [3] ** 6.67 mi (33:50 / mi) +200m 30:57 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

Hiked with Glen at Moreau Lake State Park lands on the Palmertown Range (SW of Glens Falls and along the south bank of the Hudson River where it bends west). After we got up the first 500' of climb (in 0.75 mi!), the going was much easier and the terrain very interesting -- a nice piece of property; just wish we could drive up most of the hill to get people up there for an orienteering meet (easy road access is hindered by the minimum/medium-security prison on the lands' southern border with a security checkpoint; this is also the location of the house where U.S. Grant died in 1885). We explored the west end of the park lands; gotta go back and see what the east end lands are like, but it's likely more of the same.

Great views of the Hudson 500-600' below and the Spier Falls dam, and the Adirondacks off in the distance (also of an approaching thunderstorm--we got back to the car just before the rain got heavier for a short downpour).

AOWN: a garter snake in the trail, and lots of toads; also, lots of mosquitoes and some gnat-type things, but no FDFs or (what we expected and sprayed all over for but didn't see) the dreaded blackflies.

Exerc. Class 1:00:00 [2]

Step aerobics at the Y. First half I used 2 risers, then switched to 1 for the second half (getting tired); this worked well.

Running (track) 10:48 [4] 1.0 mi (10:48 / mi)

Ran the indoor track at the Y, and did 3 of the laps at faster (*interval?) pace. Here are my lap splits:
0:46

0:42*

-- 14 laps equals 1 mile.

Walking warm up/down 4:20 [1]

After the mile run.

Strength 10:00 [1]

FitLinxx equipment at the Y. It said I lifted a total of 3985 pounds. :-) (12 reps of various weights depending on what muscle was being used.)

Note

Finally checked out the heron nests at Hand Hollow in West Lebanon. With binoculars, I could see two nests with great blue herons standing/sitting on them, at least one of them had some movement other than the mommy/daddy, but I couldn't tell about the other.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [2]

Another Wednesday, another class. Think I'll go for a walk later (to mail Father's Day cards, perhaps?). :-)

Walking 30:25 [3] 2.0 mi (15:12 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #2

To the post office (to mail cards, of course), and beyond!

Note

Knee better today (but I didn't exercise either). We'll see how it is at ex. class tomorrow.

Keeping an eye on a tick bite -- I pulled him off Sunday evening (and assume I picked him up at Crandalls); there's a nice 1" diam. rosy area behind my left knee with a nice little blood-blister in the middle.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Iffy knee didn't like anything resembling a twist; while I tried to be careful on step turns, I needed to ice it when I got home. Grrrr.. (now it hurts below the knee, not above... one of these days it'll migrate off the knee completely and then I'll be fine)

Running (dirt) warm up/down 4:00 [3]
shoes: VJ Falcon - size 6

Ran around the ball field to warm up and get my legs ready for "sprinting" (my way).

Orienteering race (Sprint B) 40:32 [4] *** 2.51 km (16:09 / km)
spiked:7/8c shoes: VJ Falcon - size 6

WCOC local meet at Crandalls Park in Tolland, CT. Ran Sprint B first to avoid some others who did Sprint A first and started around the same time. [Both sprints used e-punch.] Trouble reading contours around the cliff line used for control 5 (it was detailed enough the circle could have been cut so contour detail was more visible), so I missed to the right trying to figure out where I was supposed to be. Not a big error. Slow in the woods and I did more woods than trail on this one.

Orienteering race (Sprint A) 35:11 [4] *** 2.62 km (13:26 / km)
spiked:7/10c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

VJ Falcons used in first sprint were starting to rub my achilles tendon (even though I used tape on them; the tape rubbed off too), so I changed both socks and shoes (and tape!) between sprints.

Took more trails, but even so I missed the correct trail to # 1(!) and circled through the construction area near the north end of the map--d'oh!. I doglegged # 2 figuring the trail would be faster than the woods (having already been in them), tentative on route to # 4 (which could have been a little faster but was an easy control. Off to the right on # 5. Did better from there on in.

Very nice courses on a sweet map (by Clint Morse) which will be awesome when it's finished. What a great area.

Decided not to do another course after the two sprints, though I apparently missed the nicest section of the map (up a hill, so I wasn't sad I missed that).
