Orienteering race 58:14 [4] **** 4.2 km (13:52 / km) +85m 12:35 / km
spiked:12/15c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Brown Day 1. Despite about 3 or so minutes of error (1, route to 3, 13) I finished 2nd on Brown behind Mary Jo C. who had originally registered to do Green this weekend but who picked up a Brown course map at the start (so she switched her registration).

Warm, sunny day (temps in the 80s while running, up to 90 by the time we left) but not too humid. I was "tricked" by the course setter on the leg to 3 (line went right through 5, whose number was rather obscured by the contours and green on the map, so I went there first before realizing; I would have chosen the trail route to the right if I had realized what was up). A bit of a fight through vegetation to 1 got me a little bit off course; and I overran 13 (being too low), but total errors were in the manageable zone and I was pretty happy (but tired) when done.

Nice dinner later at Legal Seafood with the H-Ts.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Class in Chatham. Legs really tight from pilates class yesterday (lunges, mostly), but loosened up as we went along. Less sore now.

Progress on the computer front -- some excellent Mal-ware removal software found and removed a couple of trojans and other nasties from our home computer. Now to see about updating VirusScan software.

USOF website updates will have to wait until I'm sure my computer is okay.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Pilates class at the Y. Didn't seem too hard, but this is the "easier" instructor.

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 11:38 [3] 1.0 mi (11:38 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

On the treadmill, incline 5%, speed 5.2 mph, preparing for "hills."

Hiking hills (treadmill) 16:37 [3] 1.0 mi (16:37 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Hiked hill "intervals" on the treadmill for a mile; 3x 3 minutes at 8%-9%-8% (speed 3.6 mph), resting at 1%.

Running (treadmill) 13:45 [3] 1.15 mi (11:57 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Then more running at incline 1%. Heart rate got up to 140.

Walking warm up/down (treadmill) 8:00 [2] 0.45 mi (17:47 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 # 3

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

In Chatham. Legs felt really stiff this morning, so working them out and then stretching them out really helped. Left knee a little sore/bruised from when I fell running down the trail to the Go control yesterday. That should go away soon.

Orienteering race (classic) 1:05:49 [3] **** 4.9 km (13:26 / km) +145m 11:42 / km
spiked:16/16c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #2

Brown Y course on Lake Popolopen map at West Point, after an 8-contour climb to the start, behind the barracks buildings (warm up; no I didn't run up the hill).

Nice brown course, detailed locations and several good route choice legs (with a few short turning legs too). I caught up to a couple of brown runners looking for 1 on rocky features above me, but kept going where I intended and found the bag. My first plan to 2 was to climb a couple contours and stay on that contour to the bag but the hillside was angled enough it wasn't comfortable to go very fast so by the time I got to the first set of walls I started downhill to the flatter area then climbed back up a contour or so to the control. A little south of the line to 3 but picked up the big boulders on the way in -- easy. Stayed on top of the hill to 4, around the hilltop on the right to 5. Exiting 5 I saw the bag at 6 and just had to make my way over to it. Took the left route choice to 7 using the trails (cutting corners in places) to guide me SE of the swamp and into the bare rock. A little hesitation at 8 when I was standing on top of the cliff looking over and didn't see a bag, but when I looped around it there it was. 9 was an easy trail run. Stayed down the spur to the road for 10, making my way by the bayonet attack course and to the right of the marshy area into the spur. The last 6 controls were fast sprint-like points that I did easily though not really quickly as I was slowing down some. Then I tripped IN the trail to the go control... slowing me down a bit more so I wasn't pushing all that hard from Go on in. Probably could have been a bit faster if I was in slightly better shape, but I was happy with my run -- probably my best-ever split per/k time for a regular West Point course.

Ended the weekend in 3rd F55 but only 17 seconds behind Sandy, and about 10 minutes or so behind Mary Jo, who moves well in the woody rocky terrain. Very nice Brown course by Neal Trump, not a glorified Orange or a dumbed-down Green.

Lots of confirmation at the start about which course to do today (plus I had double-checked at the registration building). Did the right one yesterday too; the software hadn't been updated before we left after the middle race yesterday.

I forgot to wear my Forerunner, so if I post my course I'll have to hand-draw it in. :-) [edit] When Route Gadget is ready I'll draw it there.

Note

Thought I found a tick on the back of my leg, but either it burrowed itself under a layer of skin and hid its legs, or it's a scab from a small puncture.

Glen found 2 about 3 inches apart from each other. Guess that warm weather brought them out.
