Orienteering race (green) 1:07:14 [4] *** 4.6 km (14:37 / km) +135m 12:45 / km
spiked:21/21c slept:6.5 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Green course @ Sessions, which didn't climb up the same hill 4 times (just once, though up the steepest side).

Woohoo--open woods! Good visibility! Just a slug up hills, though; a good 18 minutes behind speedy Becks who did this as her second course (but just 4 back from Susie D.). Fun course with a lot of short legs and direction changes. And a few uphill slogs to slow things down. :-) Thanks, George and Lyn.

EDIT: FR--5.103km; 135m climb is from watch; map said 190, probably overstated. There were a few steep sections, but not too bad.

I'll qualify one of my spikes as I was next to the hill/cliff but didn't see the bag right away and I looked around just a bit before spotting it. Other flags were visible from a distance.

Note

Wasted some time finding my parents and in-laws in the 1940 census. Good thing I knew where they lived as only my mom's home state has been indexed so far (and they misspelled her last name).

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using exercise balls. Bridge pose with feet flat on ball is a hamstring killer. It would be SO nice if my left ham felt as good as the right...
11 AM

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 30:00 [2]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Hill interval; 1.42 mi

Followed by pulldowns; adductors; and leg presses with 85#.

Walking long (paved road) 1:04:40 [3] 4.4 mi (14:42 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

Missed exercise class due to a dentist visit (there will be more, to crown a molar), so went for a brisk walk on this brisk day--breezy and mid 50s. I think this loop (via RT Blass) measures about 4.4 mi (didn't wear FR). It has a couple of hills and a section of dirt road where I jogged a bit.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

No tools, just body weight. Couldn't do the side planks/mermaid (still). Careful setting my left knee down, which I scratched on barbed wire on Saturday afternoon's course; it's healing nicely but I wasn't sure if it would be sore.
11 AM

Strength 10:00 [0]

Showed a fellow Pilates classmate the adductor and leg press machines as she also has sometime-knee-pain, and referred her to the Y staff for instruction on other machines.

Adductors, 12@75lb and 12@70
Pulldowns, 9@62.5lb
Leg presses, multiple at 80lb
Some leg extensions at 18.75lb

Note

Reflecting on the weekend:

Could and should have done better using the compass in the yucky vegetation areas, which seem to be where I had most of my mishaps. Too bad my brain doesn't automatically say, "Green - use compass!" when I get there.

On the positive side, I spiked 66 of 78 controls (78 being about a third of my total controls for the year) for a score of 85%, a solid B (which is where my ranking usually is...).

I suspect there are various drills I can do to increase my likelihood of not making dumb errors, but for now I just go out and "try, try again."

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Took it easy on the moves and the stepping, and enjoyed an extended stretch for the tight muscles in right hip and both legs.

Note

Added FR data for the 3 "middle" races

I agree with those who say that Sunday's map had 5 meter contour lines, not 2.5m lines. FR trace shows I climbed about 20 meters from #2 to the top of the hill, and there are 4 lines shown on the map, ergo 5m each.

Note

Just discovered this society today:

Founders and Patriots of America

If it wasn't all just for men, I could qualify to join (have an ancestor who emigrated in 1635 and helped settle Springfield, MA). Not that I'd want to -- weren't the native Americans / First People here first?? A bit too nationalistic for my taste.

It was mentioned in this article about ROTC land nav in Arizona.

Running (paved) warm up/down 6:00 [2]
shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Partway to the start, then back to the toilets, then back to the start. Light rain; low 50s.

Orienteering race (middle) 1:18:34 [4] *** 4.2 km (18:42 / km) +120m 16:22 / km
spiked:17/19c slept:6.5 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Big Bone Lick State Park in KY known for mammoth fossils.

Mostly a good day but the vegetation got me again, on #9 conservative route choice which I then messed up, though the white woods were as advertised this time. Lost a couple minutes also on 13 where I think I left the trail at the higher bend--we'll see.

FR measured around 5.5 km.

Now to catch a flight.

EDIT: Added FR data -- 5.43 km / 194m climb recorded... huh, I think I agree with others who stated they don't agree with "2.5 m contours" on this map.
