Orienteering race 1:09:08 [3] ***** 4.2 km (16:28 / km) +57m 15:25 / km
spiked:10/12c slept:7.0 shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

Brown course at Pawtuckaway, nominally 3.6 km, designed by Ian Smith of CSU. Found out later there was a shorter "tan" option (sounds better than "silver", doesn't it?), which I might have considered since we planned to do the afternoon sprint relay. Turns out we made the relay a four-person endeavor (rather than two people alternating legs), with kadley and pbricker joining me and Glen.

Warm and sunny day, probably low 70s, so I took it slow. Thanks to a link in ndobbs' log, I had looked over Thierry's presentation on optimizing route choice by taking safe routes just yesterday and still had that in my mind. Had good attackpoints to most controls too, only hesitating on two controls. Mapping was sparse in the area around 5 (a small depression among dot knolls and large boulders) but I had seen two people coming from farther off to my left than I ought it should be and sure enough that's where the control was. To #10 I saw another flag along the route and while I didn't think I'd gone far enough I checked it anyway (burned too many to es by not checking), and it was on a small depression at the edge of my circle; just had to go a bit farther. Very nice course, and I'm glad I'm a much better orienteer than the first time I was at Pawtuckaway in 1992 (on Orange!).

EDIT: added FR track

Orienteering (Sprint) 31:05 [5] **** 1.48 mi (20:58 / mi) +36m 19:30 / mi
spiked:10/12c shoes: Jala Jukola Spider 6 #3

First out for team #1, with Glen, Ken Sr, and Phil B following. Fortunate to be in mass start so not too confused by the misplaced start triangle. Small hesitation to 1 to check code on another control (short of my control), and stood puzzled for 30 seconds or more at #10, a very large boulder/cluster, because description said "east side" and it was definitely placed "in the middle". D'oh! Barb B saw it first, then Charlie, and both were faster into the finish/tag-off area.

2.0 km SL distance; watch has extra milling around at finish because I forgot to stop my watch after the tag. Enjoyed the course, especially only having to do one.

Added FR track (haven't edited to delete the extra standing around).

Note

AOWN--saw a juvenile bald eagle standing in a field containing sheep this afternoon. Thinking about size differentials, perhaps? :-) I thought it quite unusual to see an eagle on the ground (my thought process: "What's that? Too big to be a hawk. A turkey? No, a vulture? No, it's an eagle!!!!!).

Also saw a(nother) great blue heron, at the base of a waterfall at a dam. Seemed to be watching the water crossing the lip of the dam (easy fishing?). A good year for heron-spotting.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Using exercise balls today. (Yay!) I still have the "roll up" muscles, even with feet up on the ball. Push-ups mean my shoulder will be achy for a day or so.
11 AM

Fitness equipment (erg) 5:00 [2]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Then 1000m on the rowing machine; pacing was 2:15/500m at the end.

Pulldowns (6@68.75#) and leg presses (2x12@90#)

slept:7.5 shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

New shoes. Temp in upper 70s to near 80, not as humid as earlier in the week, and the warmest it will be this week, or so we hear.

At the Pine Bush, from education center to blue trail under rt. 155 and around the loop there. Cool down was just walking from start point up to the blue trail's high point overlooking the Helderbergs.

This was after donating three bags of clothing to Goodwill, and stopping at Trader Joe's for a restocking of pretzel slims.

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

Good to be back to Pilates. Instructor Mary asked where I'd been... :-)

The left foot/heel problem I'd had from June to early August was gone, so I could do part of a plank. Still have something going on (since Feb.) with left RIGHT foot near/around ball of foot, so uncomfortable there. I was pleasantly surprised not to have lost any of my core strength (standing on one foot was more wobbly than usual, so work needed there), and just had some shoulder tightness from lack of strength there. Anyway, it was good.

Fitness equipment (Elliptical) 22:05 [3]
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Hill interval level 3; again, not a problem though I have to adjust my right foot so it's comfortable. "1.07 mi"

Also, adductors (80 & 75 lbs, x 12 reps each), and pulldowns which have been sorely missed. I need a specific exercise I can do anywhere to strengthen the lats, to support my right shoulder... Know any?
