Orienteering race (Bumble brown) 1:23:54 intensity: (22 @1) + (12:13 @2) + (44:09 @3) + (24:03 @4) + (3:07 @5) *** 5.81 km (14:26 / km) +75m 13:34 / km

QOC Bumble-Brown (2 windows out of 5), est 4.9 km , 75m climb at Seneca Creek, where the mid-Atlantics had been in 2018. Nice open woods with patches of honeysuckle and briars; well mapped by Nadim A. About 30F with a breeze that froze my hands before we started (they warmed up a few controls into the race).

I think this is our second Bumble. Fun format (five sets of boxes of controls with five controls each, with the number of boxes you had to visit handicapped to your "course" (or age)). You start with a common control for everyone, which today was a 3-400m run down a road; and finish with a common control.

For the two required windows for my course, I chose the one surrounding the start-to-first control (O-N-K-L-M), then crossed the road to do (Q-R-T-S-P) then the last common control.

I wonder if it would have been shorter/faster to do P first then QRTS before heading for the last control. Interesting puzzle.

The fast runners also had a possible incentive of a bonus at one control in each window (they could only take one) which was a time deduction upon finishing. I'm so misdle-of-the-pack I never even looked for them. I usually had people near the control to help me find the flag, so they would have been there first anyway. Ones I found on my own were N (third control) and S (third from last). 22nd of 45-50, but well behind the winner (43 min) and Kathleen Lennon (64 min).

After we finished, PIZZA!!! Yummmmmm. One of the best post-O snacks/meals of all time.

On the flat between N and K, I managed to trip myself (caught a toe) and fell forward; my left kneecap hit something hard--a branch or root under the leaves? There didn't seem to be many rocks around. Got up slowly (thanks to whoever came close and asked if I was okay...maybe Ted Good?) and determined I could still walk so finished the course. I have some bruising under it and also a sore right quad (must have hit something there too) so I might be hobbling for a few days.

Allover practice. This was hard--she's pushing us.

Note

I've had over 10,000 steps/day on my Garmin starting last Thursday, whether recorded or not.

Wednesday won't be the same, but I'll try.

Walking at a park near LadyBird Lake in Austin, adjacent to the Colorado River (no, not that one). Some interesting ducks which I need ro research, gulls, cormorants, coots, etc. Stopped to take photos now and then.

We spent the late morning on the grounds of and inside the state capitol and its visitor's center with my sister and brother-in-law who had come to visit with us from an hour east where they had been square dancing. Thanks for your company, Nancy! They also joined us on this walk.

Hiking 36:24 intensity: (18:03 @0) + (17:23 @1) + (45 @2) + (13 @3) 2.46 km (14:48 / km) +38m 13:44 / km

Oops...track includes driving between parking areas.

We got to the lower falls minutes after sunset so I took some nice photos of the sky colors behind the waterfalls.

Civil twilight still hung around when we were at the other falls (where there was a couple fishing), which has two or three chutes through the limestone for the water to follow.
