Hiking 1:30:05 [2] 3.73 mi (24:10 / mi) +141m 21:38 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 1

...and adventuring, on and off trail at the Powell Bird Sanctuary, Old Chatham, before it got too warm (was 80-84 while I was out).

Saw a robin-sized light brown bird, two kingfishers, and spooked a heron--otherwise I might have been able to watch it up close. It flew across the pond and landed near where a deer war browsing at water's edge. Heard a bunch of other birds too, but I wasn't really there for bird watching.

I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's forecast temperatures.

Fitness equipment (elliptical) 50:00 [2]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

Hill program, level 3. Incline varied between 7 & 14, resistance from 20-50. 2.09 mi

Fitness equipment (erg) 5:08 [1]
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

1000m or thereabouts. I was using the older Concept 2 which has a hard to understand display.

Pulldowns, adductors, and RDLs.

Pilates instructor wasn't there today (daughter's college orientation) and the promised sub didn't show by 10:35, so I moved on.

Note

Anomalies for today:
A squirrel with a stubby tail (thought it was a rabbit at first). Perhaps an accident? Quite a disadvantage when you're trying to balance high up in a tree.
And a 'farm' stand where none of folks behind the counter knew what freestone peaches are (so I didn't buy their peaches).

Running (dirt) 1:00:43 [3] *** 6.2 km (9:48 / km) +153m 8:43 / km
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Ran trails at Kinns Rd with FR on one-second recording to try to get better tracks for map revision. Pretty much stayed on the trail this time, but sometimes slowed down to check side trails or mappable features (of which there aren't many besides trails on the 'high' land).

Quite a few dog walkers out, which we'll have to make competitors aware of at NOD.

Orienteering (field checking) 58:51 [1] *** 2.78 km (21:11 / km) +44m 19:38 / km
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Looking for contour line changes, mostly. This is a 1:7500 map with 2.5m contours (or thereabouts). Very subtle details on the 'high' land north of the stream.

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 8.5 #4-Y

Leisurely after-dinner walk with Glen, south on rt. 66; getting almost dark by the time we got back home. Two deer, several cottontails, birds galore, grasshoppers (heard, not seen); sheep.

Warm, ~76 degrees.

Note

Moved the rest of the cut branches to the brush pile (~15 min; downhill to pile, uphill back to branches), then finished mowing the lawn.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

5-5-5 (x 2) in Chatham. Still pretty humid so felt as hot as it was on Monday, but it's not supposed to be much above 80 today (yay!).
4 PM

Running (dirt) long 55:19 [3] 3.67 mi (15:04 / mi) +159m 13:17 / mi
shoes: Trail NB 706 9D # 2

Easy trail run (1st quarter mile to and from the park is paved) at Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA, from the Church on the Hill. Forgot to take my map (enlarged version of a portion of the DNRC map that Pat D made); but enough trail maps were posted around the park to refer to that I knew where I was going.

First quarter mile to the Park gate is uphill (and a ways beyond, too). It took a whole minute less to run it back to the car than it did to run up it to start (notwithstanding that I was also concerned about thunder I was hearing at the time) -- whee!

I climbed to the overlook / picnic area near where the hotel used to be. There's a new memorial at the overlook with a granite wall (dedicated June 1 of this year), in memory of a Dr. who enjoyed visiting the park and apparently this spot. Then down (and up, and down and up some more).

Checked out the pond that oeo2oo* mentioned had a beaver-felled tree. I saw the tree, and then I saw the beaver, lazily swimming around! Certainly not very busy.

No significant ups but I did have to walk a few hills. First heard thunder as I approached the lookout pavilion (not much of a view this time of year; trees are growing up too much around it), then hustled back a different way than I had come. Kennedy Park is good for that -- lots of trails. And such interesting terrain! Too bad everyone lives so far away from it (except oeo2oo...).

*Had a mental flash earlier this year re: Fred's byline -- it sure sounds to me like what the witch's guards sing when Dorothy's friends are trying to get into the castle in Wizard of Oz. :-)

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

"Hot" Pilates today (okay, warmer than normal and humid), as there was some problem with the A/C -- poor Zumba-ers before us!! Condensation on equipment (plastic coated weights; mats; etc) was a bit disconcerting; I had a towel so was a bit more comfortable than some. We used the balls today.
11 AM

Running (treadmill) warm up/down 8:26 [2] 0.75 mi (11:15 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

Indoor track cooler than exercise studio, so went ahead with palmier intervals, warming up first on the treadmill.

Running (track) intervals 9:52 [5] 1.07 mi (9:13 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

The fast part: 1:59, 1:57, 1:58, 1:59, 1:59
for 3 times around (~345m)
Walked in between, logged next.

Walking (track) 20:10 [1] 1.21 mi (16:40 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Shadow 6000 #6 - H

In between intervals, and cool-down half mile.

Finished with 12 pulldowns @ 62.5lbs and 2x12 RDL @ 18lbs
