O race 1:03:30 [4] ***
ahr:146 max:209 spiked:7/11c

Felt wiped out by the walk to the start punch. Not a good beginning!

Barged off to the first control without thinking at all about what I wanted to be doing and took the worst possible route and only had a vague idea of where I was for quite a bit of it. Wasted about 5 minutes. Trotted off the the second control determined to be more sensible, but completely misinterpreted the circle designating the top of the little rocky knoll as some kind of manmade feature thing and felt a bit bewildered by the resolute lack of perfectly circular manmade objects in the vicinity. Wasted another 5 minutes. Charged off down the spur and got distracted by sheep trails and wandered a little further north than I expected and was going a lot faster than I thought I was (scale fail creeping in). Wasted another minute or so relocating, no problems from there through to 5, despite another argument with my compass. Cruised most of the way to 6 feeling tired and sore and sick of rolling my ankles and having sore feet. Got distracted talking to Cass on the edge of a spur, looked down at my map and cheerfully went to 6 - except I had my map upside down and had in fact cheerfully gone to 9. Wasted another 5 minutes. Sorted myself out pretty quickly and 6 was very nearby. Ran the rest of the way with no issues at all, especially as I'd already been to 9 once and the last three controls were all in farmland.

Not a particularly good effort from me, but not a disaster either. Felt very rough and sore and grumpy in the middle, which was about when I started seeing fit and active people bouncing around all over the place looking like they knew what they were doing. On the upside, I feel pretty good now, with a glass of red wine in hand and about to watch Vin Diesel run and pose in some dreadful SF/Action movie.

O (Unofficial E) 1:00:00 [1]

Went for a wander about the E course with Cass, Gina and Sue G.

Jack suggested that the appropriate metric for the four of us would have been words per minute. And that was funny because it was true.

Saw Tooms speed-hobbling across rocky ground and saw Phil D take a horrible fall over the invisible fences bordering the main track - Juffy took a nasty fall in the same place.

O race 29:55 [4] ***
ahr:160 max:183 spiked:8/10c

Intended to have a casual stroll around the course and really try and get the hang of the 1to10 map, but got halfway to the first control and was seduced by all the lovely open land and eased into a steady trot.

Had very few problems with nav - came in a little low to the watercourse bend at number 5 and corrected easily. Argued with the compass coming out of 5 (an unprecedented case of me being right instead of the compass) and visited sombody elses waterdrop control before sticking the compass in my pocket and just going with what felt good. Nailed all the rest of the controls no worries.

Surprisingly disappointed to find that I was the only person doing the M course. It turns out that a bunch of my fun is wrapped in comparing what I did with what other people did.

I was supposed to be doing the 20 minute run of the Couch to 5km program, but didn't bother to bring the podcast - I know it was supposed to be 20 consecutive minutes of running, and I'm pretty sure I got quite close to that. Regardless, I'm going to move onto Week 6 on Tuesday.

Note

Got Ed's novelty clue, read it and set off. Juffy, of course understanding what we were meant to do, and me going "That can't be right, what will the second group to the LED do with themselves?"

Jogged off up the hill to the orange LED, got about halfway there and realised no-one was coming to our one, so cruised up and cruised back (trying to hide the light) and then hung around hoping we could win chocolate instead of wine.

Win.

stretching 15:00 [0]

Dog-enhanced stretching session.

Ie - I stick out a foot and lean towards it, so Wendy rubs her face against the foot and then twists over on to her back and flails her paws against my shin and knee. I hang down from my hips, so Wendy wedges herself between my legs and arms, twists over on to her back and flails her paws against my shins and knees. I stretch up with my hands over my head, so Wendy LEANS against my knees and whimpers for cuddles.

Funny dog. And slightly inconvenient.

walk/shuffle (C25K W5R1) 30:30 [3] 3.8 km (8:02 / km) +98m 7:07 / km

No point recording the HRM info as it is total rubbish.

Felt fine again, possibly due to my snail-like pace, even though it was really stupidly late to be out running. Have really noticed an increase in comfort over the last couple of runs. Jogging uphill today was fine, whereas when I started the program it was hideously difficult.

Very pleased with my progress.
