Running 34:13 [3] 4.1 mi (8:21 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann long loop. C minus for the foot. A bit of ache to start, but by the end it was hurting quite a bit. Meh. Otherwise, the run was okay. Managed to push the pain out and stay focused. Legs were early-morning tired, and the pace reflects that fact. A 44-mile February is obviously not what I was planning, but at least I'm running (more or less). The foot is just going to be a day-to-day thing.

Running 28:54 [3] 3.6 mi (8:02 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann loop plus. I'd give the foot a C+ this morning. Ached fairly early on, but it was manageable throughout. Never felt like I had to compensate or mess with my gait, and that's all that matters. Had a tight window in which to run, so I opted to go a little shorter than planned. Felt pretty steady overall.

Running 43:43 [3] 5.5 mi (7:57 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann-Rice short. Every run is a test of the foot. This test was particularly interesting because not only was it a back to back run of something more than a couple of miles, but because the Kinvaras were so trashed by yesterday's run (they're pretty much blown out in way less than 300 miles) I had to resort to the Pure Connects. Surprise - foot felt fine. Maybe a little twitch toward the end, and a couple of achy shins from the too-quick mileage ramp up, but that's it. And, honestly, I think I run faster in these shoes. Planned off day tomorrow and then a week of 4-6 milers to try to shake off the rust.

Running 1:12:32 [3] 6.5 mi (11:10 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara #2

Saturday trails with TREX. A big test of the foot. Did just fine. Really no significant discomfort throughout. Felt really clumsy and out of sorts on the trails early on - it's actually been some time since I've been on them. Eventually fell into a comfortable groove as well as avoided rodeo folks and played in the mud.

Running 26:32 [3] 3.2 mi (8:17 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara #2

Hermann loop. Had every expectation of not making it to the end of the block after yesterday's flare up. But, I got to the end of the block okay, then into the park, then to the 1.5 mile mark where things fell apart the day before. The foot did start to ache around that point, but not nearly as bad as before and I was able to complete the run without too much problem. Really baffling.

Running 27:32 [3] 3.2 mi (8:36 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara #2

Hermann loop. Well, that sucked. Things were fine for the first mile and a half, then the stupid foot started hurting. Quite a bit. At the peak, I walked for a moment or two, but that didn't feel much better. Decided to just finish the run. Pain tapered a little but just a little. Not sure what would have happened had I gone farther. Not optimistic about what tomorrow will bring, but I'm going to try it again & see what happens.

Climbing 18:00 [3] +250ft

A top to bottom climb and descent at work. Considering that this hurt and that the initial Miwok climb alone is more than seven times this, there's a ways to go.

Running 30:47 [3] 2.9 mi (10:37 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara #2

Hermann short. Went a bit longer and ran more of this one. Dead legs and a stiff back this morning, but a good step forward. Mornings are when the foot usually hurts most, and coming off a mixed run/walk less than 24 hours earlier, I was concerned. But everything felt pretty decent. One day at a time...

Climbing 7:00 [3] +170ft

13 floors up, 21 down (with help from the elevator). Going to start hitting the stairs maybe 3 times a week.

Walking 28:49 [3] 2.5 mi (11:32 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara #2

Hermann short. About an equal distance walking and easy running (except for the dead legs). Foot bothered me a little bit early on, but then the ache just disappeared and I was running very comfortably for short stretches. Go figure. Completely baffled by this injury. In any case, since it worked fine today, I'll probably do the same thing tomorrow. If I can keep this from being a total zero week, that would help the overall plan greatly.

Walking 17:00 [3] 1.0 mi (17:00 / mi)
shoes: NB730

A get-out-of-the-house walk in the 730s. NO cushioning in these shoes, but comfortable. A little achy, but nothing bad.

Running 27:22 [3] 3.3 mi (8:18 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara #2

Hermann loop plus. A mistake to test the foot. First half of the run was okay, the second half wasn't. Time to shut it down for a couple of weeks. If I can't get past this issue, Miwok won't happen. And if I keep running on it, it's simply not going to get any better.

Running 45:29 [3] 5.5 mi (8:16 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara #2

Hermann-Rice short. Dear Kinvaras, do you forgive me? I admit that I strayed, tempted by the flashy younger girl. Please have me back. I need you and your non-foot-hurting goodness. The switch to the Kinvaras made a huge difference with the metatarsal pain. The first 4.5 miles were pretty much pain free. A bit of ache over the last mile, but I'll take that. Otherwise, I felt very strong (and happy) the entire run. Forced day off because of work travel is a good thing.

Running 25:48 [3] 3.2 mi (8:04 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann loop. After 5 more days off, it was time to test the foot with an after-work run. Typically, it doesn't hurt by the end of the day, and the start of the run was fine. Maybe 3/4 of a mile in, there was so tenderness though. By about 2 miles, it hurt and I was frustrated by the thought that this would be hard to shake. But a quarter mile later, it was better. Then it ached. Then it was okay. Very odd. By the end of the run, it felt fine. What does this mean? Don't know. Pretty sure it means there's no fracture. My guess is that it's metatarsalgia. Going to stretch out to a 5.5 miler tomorrow, this time in the Kinvaras. We'll see how that goes.

Running 26:28 [3] 3.2 mi (8:16 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann loop. Ugh. It was time to give the foot a try. Fail. Very odd. It tends to hurt first-thing in the morning, but later is fine. By the end of the day, there isn't even a hint of ache. Well, there was this morning. Hurt from the start and stayed about the same throughout. Had no intentions of doing much with this week anyway, so I'll probably just stay off it until next week. Maybe switch back to the Kinvaras for a bit & see if that makes a difference. Always effing something.
