Running 37:19 [3] 4.4 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Hermann. Just a short shake out to see how everything feels after the Guads layoff. Decent overall.

Hiking 5:30:00 [3] 13.0 mi (25:23 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

Guads - Tejas Trail to Tejas CG and back. After a bit of a morning clusterfuck, this one started somewhat late. The climb up to Lost Peak kicked my ass & from that point on, how I felt was determined by the ingestion of calories. When I ate, there was energy. Once I burned through it, I felt pretty hammered. Still, it was a lovely day in a beautiful place, so it didn't exactly suck.

Hiking 3:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

Guads - Devils Den ("Trail" 202). A hot fucking mess. Picked up Trail 202 at the Five Points Vista & quickly realized there wasn't really a trail. There was at some point, because there were occasional cairns to follow. Ended up hoping a barbed wire fence and shortly thereafter becoming significantly turned around. Ended up around where we started. Awesome. Lesson for the day - don't forget the damn compass. Oh, and put on sunscreen, idiot. Followed that with some pleasant road hiking to a lovely spot overlooking North McKittrick Canyon.

Running 47:31 [3] 5.9 mi (8:03 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Hermann-Rice short. Know what? 20 degrees off the typical morning heat index makes a difference.

Monday Sep 22, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Had to drive the kiddo to school, which would have meant a very early wake up call to run. I chose to sleep.

Sunday Sep 21, 2014 #

Running 53:38 [3] 6.4 mi (8:23 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann-Rice long. Mid-morning effort that saw surprisingly less miserable than expected conditions. Nice breeze & tolerable temps in the shade. Felt pretty solid throughout; maybe a bit tired over the last couple of miles.

Saturday Sep 20, 2014 #

Running 52:50 [3] 6.0 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Memorial Park with Chris. A little flat to start, but felt pretty good after a couple of miles. Keeping it short was nice!

Friday Sep 19, 2014 #

Running 31:28 [3] 3.8 mi (8:17 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann short. My motivation is gone. It was tough enough to get out the door, even with a "cooling" rain. Once out the door, I just didn't have the will for even a short loop around Rice. As it always does, the summer wins. Going to just try to keep slogging until a much (MUCH)-needed getaway to the Guads.

Running 38:20 [3] 4.4 mi (8:43 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann. Speed play. Short progressions x6. First three were really flat (as in "I want to turn around and go home" flat); second three were somewhat better. The only remarkable thing about it was the conditions. Stupifying humidity coupled with absolutely zero air movement had the sweat pouring out not even a mile in. This is really a godforsaken place. Literally. The Almighty has forsaken it.

Tuesday Sep 16, 2014 #

Running 57:50 [3] 6.6 mi (8:46 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Hermann-Rice long (park). A shitty night's sleep + a return to miserable conditions = a less-than-spry effort. Felt pretty crappy for the first few miles, and while things improved after that, there just wasn't much turnover in the legs. Not a wretched run, but not a winner either.

Monday Sep 15, 2014 #

Running 49:11 [3] 5.9 mi (8:20 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Hermann-Rice short. Still tired, somewhat flat legs for the first few miles. Things finally fell into place toward the end. Very humid but not hot. Alas, the rest of the week doesn't look as promising.

Sunday Sep 14, 2014 #

Walking 39:53 [3] 2.6 mi (15:20 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann. Legs were totally dead this morning, but I wanted to take advantage of the relatively cool day, so a short walk seemed like a good idea.

Saturday Sep 13, 2014 #

Running 3:13:45 [3] 16.2 mi (11:58 / mi)
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

HSP w/ Chris. First not-miserable morning in quite some time (albeit plenty humid). Felt pretty good early on & fell into a nice, flow-y pace for stretches. But definitely started to feel the mileage late in the run. Legs just aren't used to anything over 2 hours yet & certainly not on the trails. Still, good to get away.

Friday Sep 12, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

rest is good.

Thursday Sep 11, 2014 #

Running 49:09 [3] 5.9 mi (8:20 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Hermann-Rice short. Mid-summer type nasty conditions. Bleh. Run itself was just sort of there. Not bad, not great. Tightness in the left shin and calf probably warrants taking tomorrow off. Been really lucky with injuries for the last 4-5 months. Would like to keep it that way.

Wednesday Sep 10, 2014 #

Running 37:03 [3] 4.4 mi (8:25 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann. Speed play on a sticky morning. Short progressions x 6. Good to mix it up and to get things done quickly.

Tuesday Sep 9, 2014 #

Running 47:56 [3] 5.9 mi (8:07 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Hermann-Rice short. While Accuweather pegged the "Real Feel" at 89 (typical mid-summer nastiness), it felt a few degrees cooler. Everything was pretty spry this morning, which make 4 of the last 5 runs better than average. Begs the question, what went wrong Saturday? A mystery.

Monday Sep 8, 2014 #

Running 57:35 [3] 6.6 mi (8:43 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Hermann-Rice long v2. After Saturday's meltdown, I started out at a pretty tentative pace, just to see if there were lingering effects. Fortunately, rain all day yesterday led to MUCH more pleasant conditions. By the half-way point, I eased into a quicker pace and everything felt really smooth & easy. Took a slightly less direct route through the middle of the park (fewer cars).

Sunday Sep 7, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Given yesterday's heat-related atrocity, moving my zero day up a day seems wise.

Saturday Sep 6, 2014 #

Running 1:55:01 [3] 9.8 mi (11:44 / mi)
shoes: Brooks PureFlow3

Memorial/AP with Chris. Worst run of 2014, hands down. Crushed by the heat. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Friday Sep 5, 2014 #

Running 48:58 [3] 5.9 mi (8:18 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice short. Basically a repeat of yesterday. Route, pace, conditions. The conditions were slightly nastier (as if that's even possible) due to the utter lack of breeze. And while the legs felt pretty solid, the pace seemed to require a little more effort.

Thursday Sep 4, 2014 #

Running 48:36 [3] 5.9 mi (8:14 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann-Rice short. Conditions were typical late-summer wretchedness. But following the second zero day in the last three, the legs felt good. An above-average run. But I'm still ready for even a tiny cool down.

Wednesday Sep 3, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Fasting blood work for the annual checkup means a zero day. Started back with the Jay Johnson core/hips routine. Need to do this on a regular basis again.

Tuesday Sep 2, 2014 #

Running 56:40 [3] 6.5 mi (8:43 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice long. Nasty hot morning called for a relaxed pace. Legs felt pretty good after the day off.
