Hermann. Late morning effort. Warm and sunny. Warm enough to lose the shirt (apologies to everyone who had to witness my pasty whiteness - not really - I don't give a shit anymore). Felt fine.

Hermann. One of those mornings where the HR is super chill - slow to rise, quick to fall. Not complaining.

Hiking 4:11:59 [3] 8.83 mi (28:32 / mi) +2923ft 21:44 / mi
shoes: Lone Peak 3.5

GMNP - Guadalupe Peak. Cool, crisp morning. Pretty much perfect conditions. It's been awhile since I did this one and the first 1.25 was a harsh reminder that this is a no nonsense trail. Over 1000 vertical feet in that first push. The next couple of miles weren't as consistently aggressive and made for really enjoyable hiking. Stopped for a couple of short sit downs / snack breaks, but basically just kept a steady old man pace. The last 0.5 is stout - about 400 vertical feet over pretty nasty terrain. Plenty of folks on the summit. Nice conditions, so I hung around for maybe 10 mins before the descent (which was quite a pounding in its own way).

Hiking 3:42:47 [3] 7.78 mi (28:38 / mi) +1555ft 24:05 / mi
shoes: Lone Peak 3.5

GMNP - Bush/Manzanita Ridge/Lost Peak/Tejas. Beautiful but windy morning. The climbing legs took a while to come around, as they always do on Day 1, but there was no hurry to get anywhere, so I rested whenever it felt right. The route-finding across the Manzanita Ridge was pretty easy - spotting the cairns was fun. Tagged Lost Peak and ran into about a 2.5 foot snake (a bull snake, I think) on the way back down. Saw one other person heading out Tejas fairly close to Dog Canyon. Most excellent day.

Running 36:08 [3] 3.0 mi (12:03 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Kinvara 8

Hermann. Short, speed play run on a very nice morning. A handful of short bursts. Finished with a 1/4 at a pace that felt sustainable but not really easy. Turned out to be 7:40. Holding it for another 1/4 would have been ugly, but I think I could have. I think.

Hermann. Nice morning. Moved pretty decently and broke the 12 min pace (just barely) at MAF for the first time in quite a bit.

Running 49:20 [2] 4.2 mi (11:45 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Escalante B/G

Hermann. Off leash on a cool spring morning. After a few days off because of work insanity, just sort of farted around. Tried the 1/4 at an 8:00 pace. Amazing how much difference 15 seconds makes. While not really an easy pace for me anymore, it wasn't at all a big deal.

Running 38:47 [3] 3.0 mi (12:56 / mi)
slept:7.5 shoes: Kinvara 8

Hermann. Oh man. So, I can run a 1:45 quarter. I guess that's good. But fuuuuuuck, it was a lot more work than I expected. Part of the issue was finding the right pace. A good chunk of it was simply too fast - in the 6:30-6:40 range. But the real issue was that I just don't have the cardio capacity to push that hard for very long. I don't think even a 3:30 half is possible right now. Somewhat depressing. But I remain intrigued by the idea of a sub-7 mile, so I'll keep that the focus of my weekly speed play. Goal #1 - better pacing for the 1/4 mile.

ahr:120 max:132 slept:7.5 shoes: Escalante B/G

Hermann. Storms blew through overnight and left behind a gorgeous, cool spring morning. Felt pretty decent overall.
