Note
(rest day)

Zero day to let the calf rest. Ended March with 130 miles over 19 runs. Fewer off days would have been nice, but overall it was a good month. Going to have to pick it up big time in April.

Friday Mar 30, 2012 #

Running 41:09 [3] 5.5 mi (7:29 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann-Rice short. Decided to see what I could do. Whew. Definitely a plus effort. The calf felt okay to start & really for the entire run, but is now kinda tender. Good to push things a bit.

Thursday Mar 29, 2012 #

Note

Zero day. Left calf was pretty sore after yesterday's run and there was still some residual ache this morning, so I'm going to give it a day to chill out. Back at it tomorrow.

Wednesday Mar 28, 2012 #

Running 58:06 [3] 7.0 mi (8:18 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice long plus Village. Pretty solid run overall. Stuff started aching a little toward the end - feet, back, right hamstring. Nothing terrible, but probably need to pay close attention and throw in an off day if necessary.

Tuesday Mar 27, 2012 #

Running 46:52 [3] 5.7 mi (8:13 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann-Rice short plus. Just wanted to have a chill run and see where the legs were after Saturday's long effort. Happily, the legs felt great - strong and fluid and balanced. One of the better weekday runs in some time.

Climbing 10:00 [3] +240ft

Afternoon top-to-bottom x 1 at work.

Walking 23:00 [3] 1.4 mi (16:26 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Mellow after-dinner walk. Just felt like getting out and moving for a few.

Monday Mar 26, 2012 #

Walking 33:15 [3] 2.2 mi (15:07 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann short. Relaxed after-work walk. Pretty day.

Sunday Mar 25, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Planned zero day.

Saturday Mar 24, 2012 #

Running 3:15:00 [3] 17.5 mi (11:09 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Grit

Lone Star Trail with TREX. Most excellent run. The time is approximate, as I left my watch running at the turnaround (where we lingered for a bit). Lovely morning - cool start, mild finish. The trail is in pretty good shape overall, although there were some boggy stretches of shoe-sucking mud. The legs (and feet) held up great. Just one of those really good days.

Thursday Mar 22, 2012 #

Running 34:31 [3] 4.0 mi (8:38 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann long. Couldn't drag myself out of bed this morning so pushed this one back until after work. Gorgeous early evening - sunny, warm, but dry. No fluidity at all for the first mile or more. All day behind the desk will do that. Once I warmed up, the rest of the run was fine. Very mellow pace. Legs will be happy with a day off tomorrow.

Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 #

Running 49:47 [3] 6.2 mi (8:02 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann-Rice long. A little pep was back in the legs this morning. Ran the first two miles at a typical pace (8:25-ish), then spent the next 2.9 (around Rice) mixing in about half a dozen pick ups. Nothing very fast (maybe 10K pace), but the rest intervals weren't very slow - close to normal pace. Last part of the run was at a steady pace, until the end when I pushed to break 50:00 (not smart, but whatever).

Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 #

Running 52:57 [3] 6.2 mi (8:32 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice long. Getting out of bed was tough after a crummy night's sleep. But once I got moving, it was clear that the dead legs of the last few days had come around. Focused on keeping the pace very relaxed throughout and fell into a nice rhythm for a good chunk of the run where the legs had a welcome "float" to them. Progress.

Monday Mar 19, 2012 #

Running 46:03 [3] 5.5 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann-Rice short. Well, that sucked (The Sequel). Once again, the legs were as lively as a Walking Dead zombie (any of which could outrun me). In an effort to shake things up, I did some fartlek-y pick ups on the front half, but it left the legs like concrete on the back half. Just need to keep running through this dead period & the life will eventually come back. A very mellow 6 on tap for tomorrow.

Sunday Mar 18, 2012 #

Running 58:25 [3] 6.0 mi (9:44 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Grit

Lunchtime trails - Endless/Green & back. Wow, that sucked. Very warm day (heat index in the upper 80s) took its toll, as I bonked a bit on the return. Even after a number of rain-free days, the trails are still surprisingly sloppy. Still, this was a valuable run, suckiness notwithstanding.

Saturday Mar 17, 2012 #

Running 57:20 [3] 7.1 mi (8:05 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice long plus Village. Took a little while to shake off the rust and downtime aches, but once I was warmed up, the run went pretty well. Legs felt strong and I focused on keeping the form efficient. Pace was steady. My green tech T was appropriate apparel running by the packed Village bars.

Thursday Mar 15, 2012 #

Running 38:03 [3] 4.5 mi (8:27 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann plus. Battling a serious case of the crud, so there were zero expectations going into this late-afternoon run. Unsurprisingly, the cardio wasn't really there, and the humid, 82-degree weather didn't help. Actually walked briefly a couple of times. But I got out there and tried to shake some rust off - good enough.

Wednesday Mar 14, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Travel day back from LA.

Tuesday Mar 13, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Disneyland. Hard to call this a zero day, because I'm sure I walked every bit of 5 miles. Spent the better part of 13 hours on my feet - the Pure Grits ate up the gnarly Disneyland terrain.

Monday Mar 12, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Off. Travel to The Happiest Place on Earth.

Sunday Mar 11, 2012 #

Running 47:45 [3] 5.7 mi (8:23 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice short. If there is some value to running with legs that feel like concrete blocks, then this was a very valuable run. Not exactly unhappy to have a couple of days off.

Saturday Mar 10, 2012 #

Running 1:35:42 [3] 11.3 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Hermann/Rice/Village/Med Center. Non-stop rain meant no Saturday group trail run. By mid-morning, there was a break and I decided to go long from the house. The long hard-surface run is something I'll need every so often to prep for Miwok's hard-pack fire roads. Everything went pretty well. Worked by the end, but that was the point.

Friday Mar 9, 2012 #

Running 51:14 [3] 6.4 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice long plus. Lots of little aches this morning after a hard week of travel. Even the foot whispered to me a couple of times (but nothing significant at all). Managed to keep the legs turning over nevertheless on a cool, breezy morning.

Thursday Mar 8, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Off - Travel

Wednesday Mar 7, 2012 #

Running 49:07 [3] 6.2 mi (7:55 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice long. Good run at a chippy pace. The day off helped. Once again, zero foot pain. That makes me really happy.

Tuesday Mar 6, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Off - work travel

Monday Mar 5, 2012 #

Running 44:54 [3] 5.5 mi (8:10 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice short. Legs felt pretty stiff and heavy this morning, although the pace was okay. But it was a lovely, cool morning and the foot gave me zero issues. Hopefully turning a corner. Planned day off tomorrow.

Sunday Mar 4, 2012 #

Running 54:40 [3] 6.0 mi (9:07 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Grit

Sunday trails. Green/Endless out and back on another gorgeous Spring-like morning. While the big toe talked to me a little, there was ZERO pain in the rest of the foot, which made this run a pleasure. Legs were stiff at first but warmed up pretty quickly. Liking the Pure Grits a lot so far. Good stuff.

Saturday Mar 3, 2012 #

Running 1:23:43 [3] 8.0 mi (10:28 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Grit

Afternoon trails. Hungover and tired. But it was a gorgeous day and a nice chance to test out the Pure Grits. Very comfy. Hopefully these will turn into a go-to trail shoe. The run itself was fairly slow. Took a nice digger about 2/3 of the way through. Foot felt very good for nearly the entire run, only aching a bit over the last mile.

Thursday Mar 1, 2012 #

Running 45:53 [3] 5.5 mi (8:21 / mi)
shoes: Kinvara 2

Hermann-Rice short. All the stars were aligned for an epically shitty run. Poor sleep, aching foot, IPA hangover... And the first strides in some brand new Kinvaras didn't disappoint. But after a few minutes, the foot chilled out nicely & wasn't an issue at all until the last half mile of the run. I was moving pretty slowly (cuz I was tired and hungover and it pea soup weather), but I got the miles in and that's all that matters right now.
