Running long 1:37:51 [4]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

I had several different options this morning: 1) orienteering at Duder's (which I have been to enough times, and it's quite an easy map); 2) Xterra race at Shakespear Reserve (which would have been great but kind of expensive) or 3) run with Alastair on the Okura Bush track. So option 3 it was :) Really glad I did this run, it was good training. I ran with Gene, Alastair, Duncan and Kate - we went from Haigh Access Rd to Stillwater and back.

The track was in a pretty shocking condition - so so muddy! Way worse than it has been before. And there is also some construction going on near the start. But other than that, the run was good. We started at a pace that was ok, but fast enough that I was worried I might not be able to keep it up the whole way... Luckily though it was a good pace and I was still feeling good at the end :) I ran a lot of it pretty hard though and beat my previous time, yay. I also used the trick of pushing harder when you start getting tired running up a hill - it seems counter-intuitive, but somehow works! I guess because then you reach the top sooner. But it's a tactic you can only use so many times I think...

The part at the Stillwater end was like a swamp, and I also went through the river up to my waist almost :S I never had to do that before.

Note

It would have been good to go for an afternoon run, but I was too busy with rehearsal and then went to the Michael Hill competition finals :) I really thought the guy who played the Prokofiev would have won, it was fantastic, but he came third! Well anyway, it was a pretty close contest. The Brahms was fantastic :) Didn't know the Bartok really at all so it was harder for me to appreciate.

Running warm up/down 13:20 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Warm up for drills on the domain tracks.

Running drills 30:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Running drills with Mike in the domain. We had a line-making competition in the muddy ground :) I actually think Gene or Mike won, their lines were a bit more well defined than mine.

Strength and conditioning 40:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Did the massive circuit with Kate :) It's definitely easier than it used to be - still hard though! It's sort of as hard as you make it. This was the last week of the circuit - I think we may be starting up the Churchill Park sprint loops again soon... :S

Road cycling 34:30 [3]

To the hospital, I was a bit slow in the beginning so then I went pretty hard up the hill from the Strand :)
4 PM

Running warm up/down 53:00 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

30 minutes warm up - about 20 by myself on the domain tracks and then with Gene, and then about 10 with the others.
15 minutes recovery jog between intervals (5 x 3min)
8 minutes warm down.
5 PM

Running intervals 18:00 [5]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

6 x 3 minute offroad intervals in the domain. Pretty hard work, especially when it became a bit too dark. There was a smaller group of us today - only Duncan, Ross, Gene, Kate, Toby and me. And we weren't all doing exactly the same thing. So it was basically just a lot of running around in the mud in the dark by myself :)

I still think I need to learn to push myself harder in these because I can jog quite comfortably afterwards, and the warm down also felt good.

Road cycling 35:00 [3]

I was so tired this morning, I didn't go to the hospital! Wow. I feel a bit guilty... But we are supposed to take one half day of "self directed learning" each week so maybe that was it... But I did cycle in in the afternoon to meet with my supervisor for a presentation I'm giving on Friday, and then some teaching.

It was slow as there was a headwind :S
3 PM

Road cycling 30:00 [3]

Felt strong cycling home, and the weather was nice :) Now time to put out controls for tonight's rogaine!
7 PM

Running 1:21:08 [3] 16.2 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Went on a run past some of my controls for this evening's rogaine. I went through Kohi, Mission Bay and then as far as Paritai Dr and Ngapipi Rd. I love Paritai Drive. When I'm rich and famous I will buy a house there :)

Felt really good running tonight as well - pretty strong! It was good. Don't know if I could have kept that speed for 3 hours though...

Note
(rest day)

No training tonight. Instead I spent about 4 hours checking control sites for tomorrow's street night rogaine, which I am setting. It was not made any easier by how dodgy the map was... in fact, half the time I was out there was spent making map changes! So very tired afterwards.

I hope everyone likes the rogaine, I've made it difficult - if anyone can get all the controls in 3 hours I will be amazed!

Orienteering race 1:02:43 [3]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Queen's birthday day 3 at White's Line South. I'm actually pretty annoyed at myself taking another look at how I did... lost a couple of minutes on 5 and then a couple on 7!! And then another minute on the second to last control :( In between these parts I was running ok, but the mistakes just set me back so much :( Every day this weekend I have had a few mistakes like this - I need to work out how to eliminate them. I'm not really sure how it went so wrong at number 7 - I was looking around the wrong hill, and I knew it was wrong, but I ran along the line of hills and just couldn't see the reentrant I was looking for. Also, it wasn't quite how I expected in relation to the clearing.
