Orienteering 2:54:22 [4] 15.51 km (11:14 / km) +897ft 10:20 / km
ahr:141 max:179 shoes: Falcons

US Long Orienteering Championships at Bishop Lake, Brighton, Michigan. Definitely the highlight of the weekend - glacial terrain, and mostly fairly runnable woods (although some areas were tough to get through). Some nice long legs with good route choices, and lots of technical detail. Only really bad error was on no 15, but was hesitant in quite a few other places. Hardly saw anyone else out there - Eric who started 3 minutes behind me passed me on 1-2, a few other faster blue runners passed me around 5-7, and only saw a few other people on the western part of the map (which all courses visited) too.

Orienteering 25:56 [5] 3.65 km (7:06 / km) +10ft 7:04 / km

US Spring Championships - stage 1 in Plymouth IN. Didn't go according to plan. I was so excited (or cold?) on the way to no 1 that I completely forgot all the uncrossable features rules, crossed an "uncrossable" creek (that was actually a lot easier to cross than the muddy ditch yesterday), and therefore was disqualified (I didn't realize what I'd done was wrong until afterwards). I then messed up leaving no 1 and spent a couple of minutes relocating. After that, things went better. Weather was sunny, if a bit cold.

US Spring Championships, sprint 2. Much better experience (although 11 and 19 in the woods gave problems). 10-11 looked like a short leg, until you realized how far north you had to go to cross the river.

Orienteering race 58:24 [4] 6.97 km (8:23 / km) +82ft 8:14 / km
ahr:141 max:165 shoes: Falcons

US Middle Championships at St Patricks Park IN/MI. Had the novelty of having controls in 2 states, but other than that the area was nothing special. It reminded me of a bad orienteering area in Kent - lots of tough vegetation with few interesting features. And the weather (rain) didn't help. About 1/2 way through a small steam on the map turned out to be a muddy ditch that I felt was about to swallow me (others did too) followed by a hard to see (on the map) uncrossable fence. The latter part of the course was somewhat more interesting (and kinder vegetation) but there was one point where I was sliding uncontrollably down a steep slope.

Bike ride - tried out the Van Bibber Trail. The area where it meets the Ralston Creek Trail is a mess.
