Orienteering race 57:03 [4] **** 5.4 km (10:34 / km) +189m 8:59 / km
spiked:12/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

A-meet day but not part of the US Champs. Cat's Agenda map, Greenbush, WI. Similar terrain to yesterday but with a complex XC-ski trail network in the southern portion of the map. Had a good run going until I got into the trails area (and also caught up to Walter S. and Paul Regan who were running the same course). Bobbled 9 by 20 or 30 seconds not knowing which trail bend I was coming off. Planned a trail route to 10 but was off by 45 degrees on the bearing to hit the trail I intended. Got on the wrong trail, ran until I hit a junction and then spent a bit of time figuring it out. Lost about 5 minutes on the leg. After that I went back to using primarily the terrain to navigate rather than the trails and did fine for the rest of the course.

Fastest on M55 for the day (Ernst ran Red) and 6th overall on Green out of about 60-some competitors, but 10 minutes behind PG with the fastest time. Continuing my streak of having decent runs except for one leg. :-(

Orienteering race 1:01:17 [4] **** 5.2 km (11:47 / km) +153m 10:16 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

US Champs (Classic distance, 1-day). Cat's Meow map, Greenbush, WI. Very fine glacial moraine terrain with good visibility and fast running.

A frustrating run. I caught Kean Williams at the second control (he had started 2 min ahead) and was unable to shake him and was quite distracted for much of the rest of the run. Small error on 6 due to bad compass work. Slightly larger errror on 8 when I came across an unmapped "hunter's fort" and mislocated myself. Big error (6 min) on 11 losing focus and chasing a flag on the Brown course. Luckily came upon a mapped hunter's fort when relocating and was fine from there. Probably could've been 9 or 10 minutes faster.

2nd in M55 (12 min behind Ernst) so US Champs silver medal. About 10th overall on Green. Weather was cool (low 40's) but no rain.

Orienteering 53:21 [3] **** 5.0 km (10:40 / km) +177m 9:04 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: VJ Falcons 3 (yellow)

Model event on Hepcat map, Greenbush, WI - some really fine glacial moraine terraine. Actually a middle course on an area adjacent to where the US Champs would be the next day. Tried not to push the pace but rather use the opportunity to check out the terrain and mapping. Cold (low 40's) and wet with rain. Missed on two controls, both due to sloppy compass work. Forerunner measured about 6 km.
