Event: DVOA Batsto

12 PM

Orienteering race 45:16 intensity: (19 @0) + (10 @1) + (1:56 @2) + (25:21 @3) + (7:22 @4) + (10:08 @5) *** 5.73 km (7:54 / km)

Green course at Batsto. 5.1k, 70m. Woods somewhat more open than in the past due to recent fire, which made them very fast. Navigated well using primarily contours, trails and compass. Pretty much ignored the very detailed vegetation mapping. Hit all the controls and several of them I spotted from 50+ meters away. Off on compass on both 8 and 9 which cost some distance and time. Mostly cloudy and mid 60s after rain earlier in the day.

Dark and Dirty 10k Trail Run in Reading using trails on Mt. Penn. The race supposedly used some of the more tame trails but there was still plenty of rockiness plus wet leaves and some soft spots. And hills. Also some sections of pavement, probably a km or so. Raining off and on during the race but not the forecasted thunderstorms (there was one lightning flash but it was fairly distant). Temperature was in the mid 60s so in was quite comfortable even with the rain (although maybe a bit warm for running). Course was advertised as 10k but my GPS measured nearly 11k. Finished 44 overall and first 60+. About 120 runners total. Winning time was just under an hour.

At Jordan Parkway, a somewhat local park I had never been to with an extensive mountain bike trail network. Only saw one bike out there but about 10 of them were prepping in the parking lot as I finished up. Trails have some rocks and roots but no big or steep climbs. Still more left to explore here. Overcast and low 60s.

Quantico Classic, Long Distance on Beaver Dam Run map on theQuantico Marine Base. Woods a bit more open and runnable than yesterday but otherwise similar. Overcast, upper 60s with wet woods from rain showers and drizzle.

A much better run than yesterday. Biggest time loss was on control 3 when I mistook an open marshy area (which looked like a pond) for a pond about 100m south. Had been right on line to hit the control but took an out and back excursion before figuring it out. Exited control 6 to the east rather than to the north and spent the better part of a minute understanding where I was in the terrain. Missed 12 (on the edge of the field) to the right a bit following Kristin, who I knew wasn’t on my course but was headed to the same control - probably 20 or 30 seconds there, but not noticed by AP.

First overall on Brown for the day.
