Red course at HVO event at James Baird SP. 7.0k, 180m. Map has been recently redone using lidar contours and field-checked by Craig Weber and was printed at 1:7500. 5m contours but lots of form lines on the map which makes things look steeper than they actually are. Nice course by Dave Webber using every corner of the map. Woods are generally open with lots of rock features but not a lot of rock underfoot - very runnable. Good contour detail. Weather was better than initially predicted as rain showers had stopped before we headed out. Temperature in the mid-50s.

Mediocre navigation on my part. No big errors but several small ones: checked wrong cliffs on 1 and 4; didn't see the trail crossing the green marsh between 4 and 5 so swung wider than needed; came out of 8 about 90 degrees off so initially turned the wrong way; misread the description for 17 so checked the cliffs in the circle before realizing it was on the hill. All errors were on the order of a minute or so.

Good to see and socialize with some of the HVO, WCOC and Western Mass regulars who we haven't seen in a while.

Parking to the start, including a marsh crossing and a bit of a bushwhack on the part of the "trail" with faint blazes but no tread path.

Advanced 2 Usynligo course on a KP map by Gswede (Thanks!) at Richard Lake. 5.9k straightline, 1:7500 map. This area is in the Delaware State Forest (of Pennsylvania) located to the NW of the Pocono EEC. Wide open woods with excellent visibility. Much of the area has blueberry and rocks underfoot, with the rest having rocks and blueberry, so it's difficult (and physical) to do much running. No leaves on the blueberry yet, so at least you could see where your feet were going. There are lots of rock features - the KP mapping mostly picks up cliffs, which are generally accurate. Subtle contour detail, with no big or steep hills. It was a beautiful day, sunny and in the mid to upper 50s.

My orienteering was good. I used a hint for control 5 which was a form line spur in a rather flat blueberry covered area (I was on the spur but hadn't gone far enough - there was a low cliff line where the form line was). Off to the left significantly on bearings for a couple of medium length legs but fine on others.

Started backwards on the course Janet was doing until I met up with her (after 3 controls) then headed back with her. Spotted a ~4ft. long black rat snake (probably) who seemed agitated we were in the area.

Hiking 34:50 intensity: (30:53 @0) + (3:57 @1) ** 1.87 km (18:39 / km)
ahr:82 max:98 shoes: VJ Falcons 9

Back to the car from finish, taking a bit of a roundabout route due to overly casual navigation.

Southeast along the Little Lehigh from the parking lot across the street from the Fish Hatchery (not really Little Lehigh Parkway but having those words here will make this entry show up in a search). Windy and upper 40s, hat and gloves weather.

Trails at West End Regional Park. Mostly sunny, 70F - just about perfect. Trails in excellent shape.
