orienteering (cellphone-o) 37:18 [3] *** 2.2 km (16:57 / km) +82m 14:17 / km
spiked:6/8c

WCOC's Winter meeting at Rick & Susie's
Mike guided me around course B.
Tough in the snow, just like yesterday, slow but fast heart beat. We messed up number 4 quite a bit, don't think Mike knew where I was crossing the power line.. so I ended up slowly hiking up in over-knee-deep snow, up to the highest point of a hill to wonder around and describe what I saw, then go way downhill to the control.
Stopped a bit early looking for the last control. And with everybody watching me from the house (and with the phone tucked away in my pocket) I veered off left to the neighbors house, going for the finish. Speaker phone or headset would have been nice, running while holding the phone to the ear didn't really work.

FR 3.212 km

Note

After looking at PG's posted map (we didn't bring ours home) I think I've figured out what went wrong for us with control number 4.. Mike told me to stay on the trail until I got to the power line, when maybe he meant to say until the small trail hits the bigger trail. But then I told him I was right by the power line poles and he said ok then cross the powerline and the control should be west in line with the poles. Problem is that the poles are not where they are marked on the map, they are further south, so I went straight up the hill.

Guided Mike around course A. Great, fun technical exercise. Simlifying is key.
It mostly went well. We had some trouble with number 6 where I told him to follow the stonewall and that the control would be to the left on a hill. He followed the stonewall a bit too far to the stonewall-junction and he saw the big cliffs. Control wasn't visible from the stonewall.
And number 7 I knew was going to be tricky. The trail junction where I wanted him to get off the trail wasn't visible in the snow. It seemed like he was moving a bit faster than he had before. When he described that he saw a big hill right infront of him, I told him to climb up to it's highest point.. unfortunately I didn't look ahead to realize he was passing control number 8 (he told me the code) and climbed up the wrong hill. After a while we realized and I had him going up to the top of the right hill, oops!
Going to the last control, I wanted him to diagonally cross the field to get to the NE corner of the lake and Mike said: it's uphill! :)

trail run 49:55 [2] 5.81 km (8:35 / km) +127m 7:45 / km

Toughest run (jog) I've ever done at West Rock. Mostly calf deep snow which I was fighting through, had to walk a few times.

strength (snow-shoveling) 1:00:00 [2]

Snow-day hurray!! Shoveling the driveway, side walk & cleaning the cars. Heavy half a meter deep snow, hard work, definitely worked up a sweat. We were out there for ~2,5 hrs. This motion probably not good for my already sore left side.

walk 44:08 [1] 2.27 km (19:29 / km) +116m 15:30 / km

Hike up West Rock with Mike. First ran into our neighbors sledding and they let us both have a ride down the steep hill. Hiking was tough as the trails were untouched, except for the tracks of a pair of xc skis(!), knee deep to mid-thigh in the snowdrifts. Then we had to climb off trail to avoid a black pit bull without owner, were about to give up and head back.. but then the owner showed up on a trail below us and called for her dog. Made it to the top and found the roads weren't plowed. Had some coffee & lussekatt and decided to just head back down the same way. Saw a xc skier on his way up. Down below Simmons & Sol were still sledding, neighbors Scott & Katie also came to hang out. On the way back Mike and I did some sprints through the knee deep snow on the field, phew!

trail run (night) 15:29 [1] 1.95 km (7:55 / km) +27m 7:25 / km

zumba 1:00:00 [3]
(sick)

Two new really fun songs! Lungs still not 100% during cardio activity. Left side lower back/glute was pretty painful during the day - zumba felt good though.
