Long ski on fresh snow at Gunstock - warm and wet, but wax was ok.

Breaking out the Lynx Trail and then checking out some options for narrower connector trails for next year.

Back over the top of Cobble.

ahr:149 max:163 shoes: '02 Peltonen Skate Skis

At Gunstock on 3-6" of fresh wet powder on top of wet slush.
Did basically 3 loops around Cobble.
First loop a few snowshoers ahd been out and a few folks on classic skis - skating was slow with tips snagging occasionally, but OK. 2d lap someone from GNA had been around on a snowmobile, so I had a narrow trail to skate on - worked on marathon skate.
3d lap the snowmobile had made another loop right next to the first, so it was even better.

Almost didn't want to quit, but had been stopping to check emails on the blackberry and check for status reports from the bank's operations cell in Chile - need to get home to respond to some emails that I just couldn't do from the blackberry. Thankfully everyone's ok - a couple servers ended up on the floor, and they lost power for a few minutes, so systems will need to be restarted tomorrow, but minimal impact.

Exer Bike 28:00 [2]

Something different.
Raining up a storm outside - had briefly considerd going out for a real run.

Run (treadmill) 24:00 [2]

enough to break a sweat at the hotel.

Was feeling sluggish all day, this helped.

Checking out possible ski-o/snowshoe trail enhancements at Gunstock. A surprising amount of snow out in the woods - been fooled byu the melting on the trails out in the sun. Should have used my bigger Axis snowshoes.

Found a few areas where adding trails would add some interest to route choice. Limited in the area of the race trails by some significant ditching they've done on the uphill side to control water flow. Also, quite a bit of the downhill side has some sizable drop-offs as the trails been built up. There are some sections of woods that are pretty thick, but nothing that a few minutes with a chainsaw wouldn't fix.

Went up to the top/east seciton of the old upper trails and bushwhacked around the east side of Cobble - Igor has mentioned he'd like to cut a ski trail through there, but also assessing for snowshoe trail possibilities.
First hundred meters is a nice flat shoulder, then over a stone wall and it goes to crap. Steep side slope, a lot of blowdown, ledge, etc.

ahr:127 max:158 shoes: '84 Fischer Classic Wax White-

Putzing back and forth watching the classic races at Gunstock.
Besides a few warm mushy spots, trails in very good shape.
Some impressive skiing - a lot of double poling going on, and not the "my kick wax is shot, so all I have left is double poling" technique delivered with a hint of resignation, but all out "this is the fastest way to get from point A to point B, so even if this is a long gradual uphill, I'm double poling my ass off and going fast".

Alex J looking very strong at the height of land on the east side of Cobble - should have spent more time down by the turns to see how smooth she and others handled those.
A few old folks out racing - had a couple twinges of "get up off your butt, enter some races like this and see how you stack up", but they passed.

XC Ski - Skate warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: '02 Peltonen Skate Skis

Warmup across road - variable conditions. THin snow cover, a bit of powder over granular and dirt.

Ski-O race 49:11 intensity: (4:11 @2) + (33:00 @3) + (12:00 @4) *** 8.65 km (5:41 / km) +220m 5:03 / km

Medium distance red course at Morse Farm in Montpelier, VT.

Official time - 45:25 versus total time of 49:11.

Nice course by Aims Coney. Map was a bit simple and lacking in a couple areas - some extra trails, USGS contours, etc.
OK to 1-3, blew #4 (as did several others) - took 9:28 for a 3-4 minute leg. Four road crossings, nice touch to subtract the crossing times by having a control on each side.

Evening ski at Gunstock to loosen up for tomorrow.
They had a HS race there today, decided to do that loop a few times.

Taking it easy on the uphills, was feeling tired anyways. Coming across U, there's some killer uphills, it rolls for a bit, then a screaming downhillcurve. Took it easy the first time (31 kph), let loose on the 2d (38 kph), but a bit more cautious on the 3d (35 kph). Bet there was some nice wipeouts during the race on that hill.

High speed at night on a uneven trail is neat but unnerving.

Setting controls prior to the ski-o.
Temps in the mid teens, good breeze.
Feeling the effects of the cold I picked up from somewhere.

XC Ski - Skate 55:00 [2] ** 8.14 km (6:45 / km) +225m 5:56 / km
ahr:128 max:154 (sick) shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Control pickup.
Not a lot of energy left, but not feeling as bad I expected. Standing around most of the day in the cold wind is probably not the best remedy for a cold.

ahr:139 max:159 (sick)

Hanging the southern controls for tomorrow's event. Checking out the likely trails - some have deteriorated a but, but are still adequate.
Trails in the race complex are in superb shape.
Was using Tim's Rossi 200cm combi skis and my 165cm poles. Skis felt long and a bit clunky, and I've gotten used to the 160 cm poles.

Am dragging, will be glad when tomorrow is complete. Feels like I picked up a cold from one of the kids.

ahr:150 max:159 shoes: RedFeather Race Snowshoes

Snowshoe run at RV Farm trails.
Very hard packed and uneven in some spots.
Some ice and bare spots along the snowmobile trail section. Scraped across a rock with the cleat and got some sparks, which reflected up off the snow - neat effect.
Maybe had on one too many layers on my legs - felt constrained. Was able to stride out on some of the flats and the downhills, instead of just a consistent shuffle.

XC Ski - Skate 57:30 intensity: (1:30 @1) + (11:00 @2) + (39:00 @3) + (6:00 @4) 12.4 km (4:38 / km) +300m 4:08 / km
ahr:146 max:161 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Back to Gunstock with headlamp. Mt Howe is gone again, they had a high school race today, so everything got moved out onto the trails. Almost all of the trails are in great shape, whereas without the snowmaking, most would be closed.
Went to the south trails, also in good shape. Most of there are on the reverse slope from the sun, so the snow isn't getting eaten away. They moved a lot of snow onto the Cobble S curve, so it's back to good shape.
Piece right along the entrance road has a couple bare spots, I presume those will be addressed in the next couple of days.
A couple minor changes to the course design in my head, funny how moving a control less than 100 m can really change the optimum route choices.

Just after dark evening ski at Gunstock. Mostly checking ht eflow of the medium course and alterate legs from the long.
A couple GNAers out classicing in the final fading light. Andy H out spreading snow around the trails, moved some pretty good piles. Will be nice once they get groomed out.
Mostly relaxed, pushed some hills. Worked on V1 and V1 alt - much easier to do with good glide, which I had.
