Run hills (trails) 1:06:30 [3] ** 7.5 km (8:52 / km) +375m 7:06 / km
ahr:145 max:163 shoes: VJ Spikes 1

Exploring the MT Rowe part of Gunstock.

Thought the trail up to the ridge top went from the ski slope that is still mowed, but bushwhacked up and up and up, finally hitting just below the large tower. There's a ski trail down form the tower that links into the far right trail coming off Gunstock. Followed the ridge trail along until it also links up with the downhill trails , then reversed, past the tower again. The trail (Rowe's Revenge) continues down the ridge line, finally plunging off the east side and into a confusing area of more trails than are on the XC ski map.
It has some possibilities as an O map, there is some nice terrain along the hill side. Nice place for a Billygoat??

Treadmill at the hotel.

Run (Trails) 54:50 [2] ** 6.6 km (8:18 / km) +140m 7:31 / km
ahr:144 max:163 spiked:10/10c shoes: VJ Spikes 1

Control pickup at Gunstock - some snow cover left but a lot of bare spots also.
A couple of submorons had been out on ATVs on the trails, tearing up the couple of sections that would have still been skiable for a few more days.
40 F, overcast and drizzling- perfect weather for a run...

Orienteering race (Sprint-O) 29:30 [4] *** 4.8 km (6:09 / km) +40m 5:54 / km
ahr:158 max:167 spiked:5/7c shoes: '05 Integrator Hightops

Sprint 1 at Mine Falls - 4.8 km running distance, about 40 m total climb per the GPS thingy.

Conditions ranged from nice dry trails to 3" of slush over mud. Sun was out, which helped a lot.

Mine Falls tends to have way too much trail run, but I was thankful for the flatness.

Orienteering race 33:34 [4] *** 5.2 km (6:27 / km) +60m 6:06 / km
ahr:161 max:172 spiked:6/7c shoes: '05 Integrator Hightops

Sprint 2 at Mine Falls

5.2 Km and 60 m climb per GPS. MOre sluch and more mud.
Bad route choice, or rather lack of route choice from 1-2. Really should have looked at the map and seen there was a stream right in the way. ended up going to the right and over the foot bridge.

Saw John F coming out of 3 as I headed towards 2. Saw Ernst behind me as I headed into 4, then he caught me right at 5. He pulled ahead and disappeared, then I saw him again in a minute or so, headed back where we'd come from. Comment in passing was that he'd missed 4.

Kept pushing more than I thought I could, a good trail workout.

Run (Pavement) 41:35 [3] 7.0 km (5:56 / km) +162m 5:19 / km
ahr:152 max:169 shoes: Brooks

Evening jaunt - haven't run in a while and could feel it.
Started off not sure how far I'd go - maybe to the end of the block and back. Decided I better just keep going and see if could knock some cobwebs out of my system.
Skiing just doesn't have the same punch - maybe that's why I enjoy skiing more and am more inclined to stay out longer on skis.

XC Ski intervals (Skating) 37:45 [4] 8.4 km (4:30 / km) +150m 4:08 / km
ahr:152 max:172 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Evening ski at Gunstock
They regroomed the main trails, still hadn't hit the side trails, so doing the O course I still ahve out wasn't possible.

Conditions pretty fast. The few sections they groomed for the first time today were pretty soft.

Had hoped they would have groomed the Mt Rowe trails, but no luck. Nice glaze on top with a few stray snowflakes floating around.

XC Ski (Skating) 46:40 [3] 10.0 km (4:40 / km) +190m 4:16 / km
ahr:149 max:169 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Gunstock finally got around to grooming, or really just rolling, after the Friday night to Saturday storm. Where they'd rolled it was pretty good, but some proper grooming would have been nicer.

Snowshoe 1:26:00 [1] 5.5 km (15:38 / km) +150m 13:46 / km
ahr:112 max:136

Snow shoeing at Ahern after I drove over to Gunstock to find they hadn't touched it yet. Guess they aren't interested in making any $$ from folks looking to ski when there's snow on the ground. Or providing service to season pass holders who expect some level of value. Kind of a sorry situation.

Snow shoeing was nice - first time I've been out this year. Crust in the open areas, but nothing in the woods. The trees must have caught the ice on the way down. Ran into an older guy dutifully packing down the inner trail - seemed like a regular who took this self-imposed responsibility seriously.

XC Ski intervals (Skating) 59:40 [3] 9.3 km (6:25 / km) +180m 5:51 / km
ahr:143 max:167 spiked:5/5c shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Moving the last controls I didn't get to last night. They'd groomed probably 80% of the trails, which were in great shape, especially as compared to last night. The ones they didn't hit were a bit more challenging, but it was starting to warm up and soften, so it should be OK.

Stopped by the XC center to see Jane, to complain about the trails they didn't groom, drop off some maps and find out just what they want for info on the simplified trail map I'm going to create from the OCAD version, but she was out doing a lesson. Maybe later in the week.

XC Ski (skating) 54:20 [3] 12.7 km (4:17 / km)
ahr:153 max:165 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

The dog sled race track out on Winnisquam, from the beach at Ahern St Park up to the north (Chemung) end of the lake and back.

Variable conditions. They'd snowmobiled in a fairly wide track, but there must have been standing water under the snow in a few places. Looks like they bogged down the machines in a few spots which had since frozen. Also quite a bit of small dips, probably from the submorons racing and creating washboards. GPS gave me 18 m climb over the distance - cumulative effect of the minor dips and my arm going up and down as I poled??

Snow off the trail was about 8", with a good criust on it, but not hard enough to support my weight. Snow softened up as I was out, making the skating better. The ice took off most of the was I'd put on first thing in the morning before heading over to Gunstock.

Saw quite a few folks out ice fishing, a few dolts with full size pickups out on the ice. Only a few snowmobiles out, and all well behaved as they passed me.
Warmed up from 32F to about 45F the hour I was out there - wonder how long the snow will last at this rate??

XC Ski (skating) 1:00:00 [2] *** 8.0 km (7:30 / km) +180m 6:44 / km
ahr:142 max:167 spiked:7/7c shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Moving controls at Gunstock from one Trim-O set up to another.
Should have brought my head lamp, sun went down and no moon up yet. Used the light of my cell phone to check the map and confirm a couple of the new locations, then decided to pack it in - will need to go out first thing in the morning to finish up.
Icy hard scrabble conditions, looks like the groomw had done the Cobble loop and that's it since last Sunday. Lots of debris on the trails - could have been real interesting if I had kick wax on.

Also, I caught a glimpse of a moose crossing the trail ahead of me. Must have been a moose, looked to large/heavy to be a deer and much darker than a deer would be. then again, it was getting dark, so my eyes could have been playing tricks on me for the size, and when it's getting dark, how well can you tell how dark the hide is of an animal moving away from you a couple hundred feet away??
Glad I didn't get too close to nature...

Feeling quite a bit better - a bit more tired than normal.

Work and travel schedule not helping.

XC Ski warm up/down (skating) 34:00 [2] 4.7 km (7:14 / km) +65m 6:46 / km
ahr:115 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Skating lesson for Tim - been awhile since he's been on skis. 10-12" of fresh powder, but it's mid-30s and climbing, snow getting very wet.

XC Ski race (skating) 1:01:25 [4] *** 8.7 km (7:04 / km) +190m 6:22 / km
ahr:148 max:169 spiked:12/12c shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Trim-O ski-o at Gunstock. Nailed all 12 controls, pretty easy to do on a ski-o.

Snow got wetter as I went around. It was melting off the trees, got nailed on the top of my head a couple of times.

What little wax I had on my skis was for much colder conditions. It seemed like I got progressively slower as I was working progressively harder. But hey - it's March, there's fresh snow and I'm skiing.

Note

Left elbow hurting a bit. Tennis elbow?

More properly xc and shoveling elbow.

Snow blower went on the fritz between driveway clearing sessions yesterday, so I moved quite a bit by hand. Using the scoop seems to put the most strain on it - mainly when I jerk the scoop out from under the load of snow.

Got the snowblower going again, but the piles I'd made along the end of the driveway were waterlogged, it just burped the slush out the chute and dribbled down the side...

XC Ski (classic) 1:30:00 [2] *** 10.0 km (9:00 / km) +250m 8:00 / km
ahr:140 max:160 spiked:14/14c shoes: Trak Waxless skiis

Setting controls for Ski-trim-O. Blizzard underway, so it was kinda neat. Gunstock didn't open, some BS about letting the snow fall and they'd be open with all trails groomed tomorrow.
Someone (Igor?) had been out with the big snocat packing stuff down earlier, but only with the tracks, no roller, so the center section was untouched. Even with the packing, it was coming down at a good clip, so I was plowing through some pretty heavy deep stuff.
It was a bit above freezing, and the snow was occasionally mixed with freezing rain/sleet/rain. I was pretty much soaked by the time I finished.

My skis are really made for intrack use - too narrow to be of much use off track. Maybe time to go bacl to my roots and get a pair of true cross country skis - wide clunkers that you can go cross country on.

Had to backtrack once, as I was hanging what I thought was the last control, I noticed I still had a flag in my backpack. Checked the number, had to go back about 700M and 3 contours to hang it - had blown right by there twice.
