Run tempo (trails) 38:00 intensity: (8:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (10:00 @4) ** 4.9 km (7:45 / km) +100m 7:02 / km

Running the bike trails at Ahern - local meet there in 4 weeks - searching for inspiration. Bike trails have been getting a lot of use - probably ought to add some more sections to the map.
Considering adding a bike-O to the agenda for the Ahern meet, along with the double header sprint. Will have to do some map touch up and see what it looks like. Not sure about course setting for a bike-o, assume it would be comparable to a ski-o, route choice is a primary factor. Will have to see how the many wiggles in the bike trails translate on the map - there's quite a bit of doubling back that could make for a cluttered map.

Pushing pretty hard on most of the single track sections - a lot of back and forth, so overall speed wasn't much to brag about, but with all the side to side, was moving pretty quick (instantaneous velocity?).

Decided to get outside and run, despite feeling slow and ponderous and knowing what a spectacle I'd create.

Did an out and back, all on sidewalk. Slow and steady on the way out, then added some surges on the way back, using telephone poles as measurement. Surge 1, recover 2. On the verge of misting, breeze in my face on the way back. Felt pretty good.

Trail run. Parked in the Gunstock lot, then down the road past the base of the ski jumps through camper village. Looked like it was a full house this weekend.

Up trail 18 - to the Mt Rowe ridge, then run the ridge, following the "ski" trail instead of the snowshoe trail. To the ski slope, then up to the summit of Gunstock in just under an hour. Down the Yellow trail, then the Blue trail to the summit of Belknap at about 90 minutes. Down the East Gunstock trail, to the Gunstock - Round Pond ski trail and followed that in.

Very nice morning, low 60s at the start, upper 60s in the parking lot when I got back. Nice breeze most of the way.

Upper Body 1:00:00 [1]

Giving myself credit for an hour of upper body work - actual time engaged was a bit longer. Actual activity was prepping and laying in an 8' x 8' pad with concrete pavers to put in the hot tub. Has been sitting under the deck since I helped my father-in-law pull it out of his place late last summer. For some reason others in my family have decided it was time it was in and hitched up and functional - will be a wonderful thing come skiing time...

Still need to decide onhow I'm going to roof in over it - it sits under the deck, and with every wet weather event water will come dripping on down on it. Will probaby used corrugated roofing attached to the underside of the deck, with enough slope for drainage.

Kayaking 45:00 [1]

2 days of kayaking in a row, must be a spell of nice warm weather...

Saltmarsh Pond - gentle breeze which died shortly after I put in, so the bugs came out.

Wasn't working as hard as I did yesterday, or so I thought, but ended up with small blisters on both thumbs.

Kayaking 1:00:00 [1]

First outing of the year - expect to feel it tomorrow.

Enough breeze that I opted for the kayak rather than the canoe, much easier to keep on a straight track on the lake.

Opeche, put in at the PSNH ramp, up to the N end and back. 2 couples hanging out in the middle of the lake on kayaks, plus a guy in a neat rig - looked like a hand made kayak - sat very low in the water. Was using a wooden paddle, looked like a single piece that only widened out to 5 or 6 inches for the blades.

AOWN - loon hanging out in the middle of the lake. Got pretty close before it dove under, then it came up not too far away.

Run hills 1:04:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (4:00 @4) 8.0 km (8:00 / km) +150m 7:19 / km
ahr:147 max:162 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws

Evening run at Gunstock. Hitting the hills hard, at least where footing allowed, in short bursts.

Checking out the logging activity. Quite a bit of cleanup since last week. They've pulled most of the big stuff out and cleaned up almost all of the slash, so it was runnable, although numerous opportunities to twist an ankle. They've gone thoruhg with the back hoe in some places and leveled off the humps, but still a lot of stumps to pull out. The new double trail around the west side of Cobble has been roughed in, but a lot of cleanup to do in there, as it goes through a pretty gnarly boulder field. Will be interesting to see it take shape.

Rock Loop and Woods Loop have been widened, as has most of trail 9. At least the trees have been taken out, lots of earthwork still to go. The Knoll Loop has been reconfigured - hope they keep the old trail sections in addition to the new stuff that's gone in.

Walking 35:00 [1] 2.5 km (14:00 / km)
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail

Just out stretching my legs to make sure they still worked. Not too bad after yesterday's excursion.

A lot of time doing odds and ends around the house and yard.

Hiking long 6:00:00 intensity: (4:00:00 @1) + (2:00:00 @2) ** 12.5 mi (28:48 / mi) +900m 23:32 / mi
shoes: Merrell Radius Hikers

Hike with Jon, the Tripyramid loop. Up Greeley Pind Trail, Flume, Old Skidder, down the Livermore, up Scaur Ridge, Pine Bend Brook to the N peak. Then the Tripyramid Loop Trail back to the Livermore Trail and back to the parking lot.
Cool and increasing breeze throughout the day with partly to mostly cloudy conditions. Very few bugs. Lots of moose signs, but no moose sightings.
Ran into snow the last part coming up to the top of the N peak - up to waist deep in some places, although we were only occasionally punching through up to our knees. Some tough climbs. Limited views on top.

Not a lot of folks on the trails.

Run hills (trails) 55:00 [3] 8.0 km (6:53 / km)
shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Trail run at Gunstock. They're cutting some new stuff.

First indication was when I was heading S on the E side of the Cobble loop. Looked like a tree was down, blocking most of the trail. Cut into the woods to go around it and realized it was 3-4 trees laid down side to side, and then 100m later there was another bunch. Looks like some trail widening and cutting some new sections. A bit early to determine what hte new trail layout will look like - will be back several times over the summer to watch it progress.

Event: Billygoat

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1] 8.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Hauling out a bit more water and final control checking in the am.

Then picking up a couple of water stops and pulling controls 4-8 after.

Am not counting the nervous pacing during the day, or the scrambling to get the first manned water stop moved to the correct location...

Orienteering 3:00:00 [1] 8.0 km (22:30 / km)
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail

Hanging controls and lugging water for tomorrow's Billygoat

Treadmill at the hotel - crappy outside

Orienteering race 22:56 [4] *** 2.5 km (9:10 / km) +35m 8:34 / km
ahr:156 max:168 spiked:11/13c shoes: VJ Spikes 1

College Woods - Sprint1
GPS Distance Covered 2.87 km

Was pretty clean throughout - a couple minor bobble or routes where an alternate might have been a bit faster.

Behind JJ and Ben Parsons, beat Tim P and Alar, which felt pretty good.

Orienteering race 26:07 [4] *** 2.8 km (9:20 / km) +60m 8:25 / km
ahr:159 max:171 spiked:11/13c shoes: VJ Spikes 1

College Woods Sprint 2
GPS distance covered - 3.2 km
Not as nice - started by leaving the start 180 out, which cost me a few seconds.
Felt slower and less focused. Another bobble when I went too low to #9 - went past it to the lower trail junction and had to circle back and climb. Looks like it cost me 1:20 and an extra 100 m +.

Visibility was pretty good - only a few bugs.

Ernst made good use fo the area - can't remember how many times I've run here - can still be challenging.

Orienteering 1:40:00 [3] **** 10.3 km (9:43 / km) +200m 8:51 / km
ahr:142 max:162 spiked:11/13c shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws

Running portions of the Billygoat - it's going to be great!
Tremendous variations in the terrain and vegetation. Some good route choice and skip options, in my humble opinion.
Hope we don't get a lot more leaf in over the next week, might make a difference on a few legs.
Temps were mid 60s, gentle breeze. Wasn't pushing hard - felt OK throughout. Bobbled a few controls - hard looking for streamers rather than control flags. Also had only been to a couple of these locations in the evening with waning light and had a distorted picture in my mind - not an issue if you've never been there before...
