Upper Body 2:00:00 [2]

Hauling, splitting and stacking wood at GNA. 4 pickup loads cut and pulled out of the woods by the newer trails.

Back and arms are toast.

Run race 26:46 [4] 5.0 km (5:21 / km) +100m 4:52 / km
ahr:162 max:168 shoes: Brooks

Project Extra 5 k race. Should have spent more time warming up - couldn't seem to get out of 2d gear. Not used to running at a constant pace for extended distances anymore, was waiting for a control so I could punch and take a 5 second breather.

Maybe need to drop a few pounds, just when I'm wanting my winter warmth...

Run warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)

Mapping 20:00 [1]

2 hours doing some rough field checking at Ramblin Vewe Farm. Working off a USGS base that has had the trails GPS'd in. Checking into photo availability and cost to have a good base map done.

Some interesting features - will be very good for beginner and intermediate courses, as well as sprint style advanced.

Run (trails) 47:00 [3] ** 7.0 km (6:43 / km) +400m 5:13 / km
ahr:147 max:163 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws

Runnning the trails at Gunstock. Still no final cleanup on the two new connectors on the west side of Cobble, but there has been some work done on the east side of Cobble, near the picnic table clearing, as well as on the far south end of trail 9 (Maple?). Some sections of plastic culvert laying beside the trail, looks like they're going to put in some drainage.

Need to send GNA a copy of the revised map and get their input on how the trails will be finalized and groomed - it would seem that some of the short connectors will be abandoned where a new trail is going in very close by.

Run (trails) 1:15:00 [3] ** 8.9 km (8:26 / km) +800m 5:49 / km
ahr:141 max:158 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Checking out some more of the trails around the Ramblin Vewe Farm. Several of them went down, and then down some more, and then more... Hmmm, he who goes down, must come back up again, and I did.

A bit more than I was planning on, but am getting more positive about this as a good site for an o-map.

Run / hike long 2:32:00 intensity: (22:00 @2) + (1:10:00 @3) + (1:00:00 @4) ** 14.5 km (10:29 / km) +1000m 7:48 / km

Taking the week off, so have to figure out what to do with myself, besides all the projects on my list.

Exploring trails on the west side of the Gunstock / Mt Rowe ridge. Parked on the NE side of Rowe at the end of the old entrance road, and headed up. Some patches of snow left on the ground from last night - some cold pockets on the north and east sides out of the sun.

Over the ridge and down a trail towards Gilford Village. Kinda sketchy trail markings and trail junctions were hard to find - sub-par as compared to elsewhere in the Belknap range. Down over the other side, was able to figure what was what eventually, then headed back up. Didn't take as long as I thought, so headed off down another trail to see where it ended up. Thought I found the trail that wrapped around the west side of Gunstock ending up near the summit, but the trail kept dropping. Quite a few trails branching off downhill towards GIlford Village, but kept to the highest one. Ran into a older woman out walking her dogs and asked where it ended up and I got a rundown on every trail on that side of the mountain, except the one I was looking for. I think she was lonely and welcomed a captive ear. Finally decided to head back up and try again another day, but one of her dogs decided to come along with me. Turned around after a few hundred meters and ran it back to the woman.

Legs were pretty much toast by the time I got back to the car.

Hiking (trail & woods) 37:00 [1] 2.4 km (15:25 / km) +150m 11:45 / km
shoes: Merrell Radius Hikers

Checking out the Smart Woods tract across Morrill St from Ramblin' Vewe Farm. Not much for trails, and rather non-descript woods. Someone got quite an extensive sugaring operation set up, left most of the vacuum tubing in place strung through the woods.

Hiking (trails) 50:00 [1] 3.9 km (12:49 / km) +350m 8:51 / km
shoes: Merrell Radius Hikers

Back to the Ramblin' Vewe trails. Mixed snow and light rain, so I wasn't overheating. This place has some definite possibilities for a good mixed use O map. Good trails and stonewalls for beginner courses, and enough size and varied terrain for advanced. Should be good sprint terrain. Seems like the trails are well spread, with some interesting chunks between.

Need to see what they have for aerial photos, or if there is LIDAR coverage. Could go from a USGS base, but something better would make the field checking go faster.

Hiking 25:00 [1] 2.0 km (12:30 / km)
shoes: Merrell Radius Hikers

Checking out some of the trails around the Ramblin' Vewe Farm with Ryan, Jen and their mom. Open house at the farm - sheep shearing, baby lambs, pig on a leash, and some space to run around - a nice morning!

Was wearing an UNO hat - got approached by Weldon Bosworth, one of the trustees. He's familiar with orienteering, having done it in the military. Was interested in holding a "rogaine", as well as geocaching, etc. Will check into what's available for basemap, and check out the terrain for basic or advanced O possibilities.

Run (trails) 42:00 [3] * 5.8 km (7:14 / km) +300m 5:45 / km
ahr:151 max:165 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Checking out more of the Ramblin' Vewe trails from the trail head at the end of Boyd Hill Rd.
Nice trail complex, will have to see what it looks like in the winter time - from the signs looks like can expect a mix of skiers, snowshoers and walkers in boots.

Some definite O map possibilities. Could be a good site for a ski-o, with European width "skate" trails

Hiking long 2:45:00 [1] ** 11.6 km (14:13 / km) +600m 11:18 / km
ahr:92 max:137 shoes: Merrell Radius Hikers

Hiking with Jon on the south part of the Belknaps. Parked near Camp Bell, then the Red/blue trail to the other side of the scout reservation, then over Goat Pasture Hill and Mt Shannon. Looks like it would be prime orienteering terrain, some interesting features, quite a few stone walls and a fair amount of trails.

Run / hike hills (trails) 52:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (32:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) 6.4 km (8:07 / km) +400m 6:11 / km
ahr:147 max:164 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Over at Gunstock - Up the snowshoe trail onto Rowe, over to The Gunstock downhill slopes. Climbed a bit above the top of the Tiger chair, realized it was getting dark and headed down.
They've mowed most of the downhlll slopes - haven't touched the XC / snow shoe trails over on Rowe - much lower priority, as this generates a lot less revenue...
