Note
(sick) (rest day)

Was going to go for a ski/run/snowshoe, but had to work for a bit, then the sniffly nose I've had for the past few days turned into full blown cold symptoms, so took a 2 hour nap to help the aches and overall blah feeling subside a bit.

XC Ski - BackCountry 1:56:00 intensity: (1:15:00 @1) + (41:00 @2) 8.77 km (13:13 / km) +454m 10:30 / km
ahr:122 max:141 shoes: Rossignol BackCountry Skis

Opted for something slower today, although with a lot more climb.

Snow cover was OK - a few windblown spots up top. Hit a couple of patches that the sun had warmed, where my skis immediately iced up. Downhills were occasionally challenging - between vegetation and variable snow depth. No major wipeouts.

Hiking 1:10:00 [1] * 3.7 km (18:55 / km)
shoes: Merrell Radius Hikers

Hamlin Eames Forest in Meredith. Was going to snowshoe, but looked like only 5-6" at the parking lot, so not really worth the extra weight on my feet and the more awkward gait, so went bare-boot, but with gaiters. Backcountry skis would have been a good option, but didn't have them along.
A pleasant stroll, not much wind at all. A few tracks here and there. Had been a few folks out yesterday, but looked like I was the first today.

XC Ski - Skate 1:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Skating at Gunstock. Did some drills back and forth on the lanes, then checked out the rest of Brook Run, then across the road.

Could stand to have a few more inches of cover - big cat tends to pull up grit and/or wood chips. Did catch one ski on a rock on a faster spot, almost threw me, but was able to recvover.

XC Ski - Skate 1:19:39 intensity: (17 @0) + (3:06 @1) + (25:55 @2) + (49:31 @3) + (50 @4) 14.87 km (5:21 / km) +275m 4:54 / km

Most of the trails were groomed. Soft in many places, gritty also. Quite a few folks out.
Shouold have gone out earlier in the day - might have been colder, but no breeze. Glad I'd grabbed my ear muffs.

On about version 25.5 of the trail map - have been updating it yearly for the past few years for them - the previous version was an abomination - hand-drawn with very little relation to reality. This year, dropping all the trail numbers and associated legend - trying to fit the trail names on the map so they are legible. Also adding red striping to highlight the potentially gnarlier hills - in a non-threatening way. "Hey, you might want to be careful on this section, depending on snow conditions."

Challenging with numerous short connector trails, as well as the mishmash of trails that GNA has added on the N side of Cobble - how do you string together all the short sections end to end and give it one trail name? Or does it really matter?

Run 1:07:00 intensity: (44 @0) + (5:34 @1) + (29:32 @2) + (31:10 @3) 10.59 km (6:20 / km) +158m 5:53 / km

With the blizzard starting to wind down, and the initial romping in the snow with my granddaughter done (who would think an almost 4 year old would love snowshoeing?), headed over to Gunstock.

Was thinking of snowshoeing or skating, to not torture the muscles I abused yesterday, but stopped in to talk to Paul & Neal - Paul had just come back from tracking the Cobble loop with the snowmobile and sled. Andy had been out earlier with the big cat, but only track-packed it, skating looked to be out. Seemed to be a perfect hard blue day, and it was.

Back and forth on Cobble, generally counter-clockwise. A couple bare spots on the section by the entrance road, where the wind had moved it all off, but the rest was pretty sweet. Big S curve was OK, glad I was going up instead of down - only a narrow groomed bit.

Partway through a big cat came down the trail, obliterating most of the tracks - just some dude heading to the pump house. Saw Neal shortly after that, got the feeling words would be exchanged.

XC Ski - Classic race 48:33 intensity: (8 @1) + (8 @2) + (48:03 @3) + (14 @4) 10.61 km (4:35 / km) +164m 4:15 / km
ahr:150 max:159 shoes: '07 Fischer Classic White-Yell

Fro some reason, decided that doing a 10k classic XC race was just the thing to do today. 9 laps around an advertised 1.1 km course, fortunately they were counting for us. 15 second start interval, I was in the middle of the pack to start.

Could have been better, could have been worse. Wax was OK, technique was problematic. Seemed to be too tense, couldn't relax and work it the right way. Was slipping on most of the uphills, but could stride up some. Reverted to wimpy herringboning a couple of times, just to keep moving.
Heart rate gets higher than this in training, for god's sake!
Got Paul from Gunstock in my sights, would catch up to him on the flats and downhills, then lose it on the uphills.

Got lapped a couple of times by most of the younger hotshots, including Neal from Gunstock and the 2 gals racing - humility is a wonderful thing, I guess.

Will be very sore tomorrow.

classic loops, weaving in and around the shufflers.

Getting blown away by a HS/college racer out training - kid's pretty good

XC Ski - Skate 37:36 intensity: (1:25 @2) + (21:08 @3) + (15:03 @4) 8.42 km (4:28 / km) +100m 4:13 / km
ahr:152 max:162 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

They've opened up a bit more trail - 5 loops through stadium to Dryfire, hairpin back onto Quiver, then lower Broadhead. 1 loop as a figure 8, then done with skiing for the day.
3 PM

Run 30:02 intensity: (5:47 @1) + (9:52 @2) + (14:23 @3) 3.21 km (9:21 / km) +150m 7:35 / km
ahr:139 max:156 shoes: New Bal 572 Trail

Checking out snowshoe trail that has been flagged in the area of the Pines (I think that's what the name is - don't have it labeled on the map - my bad). Goes from the end of the parking lane, diagonally downhill through the camping area, to the old entrance road.
Paul's stated vision is a snowhoe trail that goes up by the jumps - and connects to the old grown in slope (Rollercoaster).

Might be ok getting to the jumps, depends on where they want it to hit. A bit problematic past there - might be OK from past the top of the 70m, but there will be some steep sidehill sections.

ahr:150 max:162 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

More laps at Gunstock by headlamp

The addtional stuff they'd moved around last evening was just a widening of part of the lan ein the stadium. Was hoping they'd moved enough snow to open up some more trails.

XC Ski - Skate hills 39:15 intensity: (56 @1) + (3:35 @2) + (30:19 @3) + (4:25 @4) 9.2 km (4:16 / km)
ahr:147 max:158 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Evening ski - more laps on the short loop - 17 I think, although I was having a hard time keeping track.
Since I was the only one there, was doing a few clockwise, then reverse for a few, then reverse again.

Sam and Andy from GNA showed up just as I was leaving - they are spreading out a lot of the snow pile around the stadium - HS race tomorrow afternoon - sprint relays.

XC Ski - Skate 26:00 [3] 6.4 km (4:04 / km) +180m 3:34 / km
shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Finally on skis. 12 x 550 m loop at Gunstock - stadium, turn right up the hill, right onto lower 4, up then down, quick up hard right and back in the stadium again.

Started shorlty behind a tall guy with pretty good form - he was looking a lot better than I was feeling. Took a break after half a dozen laps to let him go by, then did another half dozen.

Used my new poles, with the palm straps - not sure if I like them or not.
1 PM

Run / hike 49:00 [2] * 5.0 km (9:48 / km)
shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Run / hike to check out the newly cut snowshoe trail Paul told me about. I would have routed it differently in a few places, but it should be OK.

Hope the GPS track is reasonably close - trying to update the XC trail map

Thursday Dec 16, 2010 #

Run 31:45 [3] 4.0 km (7:56 / km)
shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Evening jaunt on the still to be covered with snow trails at Gunstock.

GNA has been blowing snow all week it looks like, rumors of a weekend opening.

Sunday Dec 12, 2010 #

Trail run in light snow at RV Farms - before it gets warmer and nasiter this affternoon - supposed to turn to all rain and a lot of it - 1-2". If only it would stay all snow...

Saturday Dec 11, 2010 #

Run 58:20 intensity: (10 @0) + (13 @1) + (4:24 @2) + (26:19 @3) + (27:14 @4) * 7.33 km (7:57 / km) +193m 7:02 / km
ahr:153 max:169 shoes: New Bal 572 Trail

Checking out the snowshoe trails as Gunstock. Lower Lynx hasn't been cleaned up like the rest.
Quite a bit of snow's been spread around, but forecast is not looking promising to keep it and be able to open soon.

New entrance is open, ramped on both sides to allow the XC trail to go up and over - just need a foot of good snow now.

Sunday Dec 5, 2010 #

10 AM

Run 56:58 intensity: (12 @0) + (3:50 @1) + (8:42 @2) + (36:26 @3) + (7:48 @4) * 7.11 km (8:01 / km) +254m 6:48 / km
ahr:147 max:161 shoes: New Bal 572 Trail

Trail running at Gunstock - checking out what has or hasn't been done.

Snow gun not going at the stadium, no action on the 2 upper connector trails paralleling the entrance road.

Went up and over Cobble - able to keep running the whole piece - not fast, but still running.

Someone's been spreading mulch on where they did the enhancements on 9 last year - about 1/3 of the upper section is covered. The hairy S curve still looks hairy - tractor came down through there while it was still wet and muddy, some big ruts there now - probably fixable.

Saw where the XC center crew has moved a section of the snowshoe trail in the far S end - hooks a sharp right and hit the trail just before it gets to the meadow, rather than crossing the stone wall and hitting the meadow directly. A couple of dump loads of torn up asphalt on the trail just prior to that - assume someone's coming back to spread that around.

Looks like the new entrance/bridge is close to done, although they still have it blocked off.
