Evening ski at Gunstock - had the place to myself. One guy was leaving as I was putting my boots on - said it was fast and hard, and he was right.

Calm and peaceful out there, but cold.

Out and about at Gunstock.

Had contemplated snowshoeing, but skiing conditions just too nice to pass up.

Late afternoon at Gunstock. Too much going on at work and at home, should have gone out earlier in the day, but just couldn't make it happen.

Brief chat with Paul, then headed out, saw someone come tearing in and around the corner from Birch takign a right onto Cobble, thought it was Paul, so tucked in behind him. Keeping up ok, interesting to watch someone else from behind. He was on stubby Salomons, and his tempo was different from what I was doing. He was double poling along the flat and starting up the long incline past hte pump house, so swung around him and was V2ing up the hill - felt pretty good. Screaming down the hill, and passed Paul coming up, so who was this I'd been skiing with?? Made the corner at the bottom of the hill, onto Quiver, then dropped down Dryfire, V2 up the runout, over the top, tearing around the corner and up into the stadium. Had pulled ahead a bit, so stopped to catch my breath. Chatted with the guy for a few minutes, have seen him around, didn't get his name.

Note

Two Ski-Os this weekend and didn't get to either one. Windblown on Saturday would have been nice, but being on call wasn't sure of the cell phone coverage.
Weston late this afternoon wasn't in the cards either - a bit too far and too much else to do.

Also wanted to do some driveway cleanup, and needed to hit the roof - glad I did that, but should have dine more on the front - ice dam formed and had a bit of water dripping into the sunroom just before sundown.

Got too exhuberant with the roof rake and took down the very large icicle at the inner corner, which also pulled the heat tape and must have snapped a conductor, as it stopped working. Got another one this afternoon and just finished getting it in - up one valley and down the other, with a few zigzags at the eaves on both sides.

At Gunstock, observing the goofiness of a winter triathlon.

Last few folks were finishing up the run, with most on the bike phase when I got there. Real mix of abilities.
Went around Cobble and out on Birch/Oak, Ran into Paul McN and chatted for a bit, then back on Maple to Short Oak and reversed Cobble to Rock Loop, then continued the Cobble loop clockwise. Across Longbow, watched some folks on the ski portion, then back around Cobble, with a short jaunt out Birch to the cutover, then down Maple, finshed Cobble and some minor messing around and in.

Had warmed up to the mid to upper teens - pretty pleasant.

Upper Body 30:00 [2]

Close to 3 hours of snowblowing (cleaning up the driveway, around the firehydrant, trails out back, etc), then shoveling off the roof. Arms, back and torso tired.

RV Farms by headlamp.
Breaking trail. A few folks had been out on snowshoes. Firtunately they stayed on one side of the jeep trail, so I could set ski tracks on the other side. 6" of powder on top of crust on top of 8" from the prior storm, on top of whatever from earlier.

Quiet and peaceful.

A short low intensity bit of something to at least break a sweat.

On the chilly side, but with little wind it was tolerable.

A few folks out on the trails, but not crowded by any means. Enough shufflers out there that I felt graceful and fast.

Did not have on the right wax for cold and dry.

Snowshoe long 2:30:00 intensity: (1:45:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) + (15:00 @3)
shoes: Axis 930 Snowshoes

From the base of the Belknap Carriage road, up the W side of Gunstock to the summit, then across to Belknap, down the yellow trail to the top of the Carriage Road and back down.

A few folks had been up/down Gunstock, but no one had been over to the Summit of Belknap since the 2" of powder we got a couple days ago. Met one guy coming down the Blue Trail, from his tracks he'd come from Piper. Considered doing that as well, but was getting cold and the wiond was picking up.

Swapped to the Peltonens today - slapped on some LF7 which seemed to be ok.

Quite a few folks out today. Conditions pretty good, although some dirt did get pulled up by the groomer tracks in many locations.

Interesting how different people bail out on hills - on the big S curve coming down Cobble towards the downhill parking lot. A coupleo sets of tracks veering off into the soft power at the edge, then a churned up area from a face plant, the floundering to get feet back under and back onto the trail. The alternate, which some seemed to go for, was just plunk your butt/knee/whatever down in the middle of the trail, leave a big divot and ski off - someone else will fill it in for them, no big deal. :-(

Must have been working up a sweat. When I got back to the car, had a 3" icicle hanging from my hat just in front of my right ear.

missed the shut off on the Garmin, so it kept going as I drove home, then kept timing overnight. Tried to download when I got home, but it looked like it had lost the workout. Workout was still underway however.

They've groomed out just about everything at Gunstock now, even did the short race loop on the back side of Cobble. Was cold and getting colder, and skis were slow - need to rewax.

Another Gunstock evening.

One other person out with a headlamp that I saw in the distance now and then.

GNA crew setting up the snow gun to start making another pile. Even with a storm projected for Wed - can always use some nice dense stuff to fill in the gaps where mother nature's contribution gets blown off, wears thin, or gets eaten by the sun.

Some DP work, and trying to V2 as much as possible in areas where I'd normally be dogging it.

RV Farm Trails - light dusting of powder on top of variable stuff. Some bare, ice, crusty snow and a very few wet spots.

5x tow rope hill at RV Farm.
Halfway through #4 just ran out of steam, but finished that and did another just for grins and giggles. Legs all wobbly, which made walking back down interesting.

Run warm up/down 11:18 intensity: (1 @1) + (4:56 @2) + (6:21 @3) * 1.38 km (8:11 / km) +38m 7:12 / km

And back to the car.

Had been one car at the lot when I started - didn't see whoever that was out on the trails. Another car there when I came back. Seems like these trails get wuite a bit of use, even in the winter.

Evening ski at Gunstock.
Would have gone earlier in the day, but they were hosting a NH coaches Series race, a few hundred middle school and high school racers.
Had a 2.4 km loop covered with snow. Took Ryan and Jen over to watch. They had a good time running around, although Grampie did have to do a bit of carrying up some hills. Sort of interested in the kids racing, but more so in kicking the clumps of snow and ice by the side of the trail, or making tracks through the 2" of snow off in the woods.

During the boys HS B race, one kid had a bad fall on one of the gnarlier downhills, possible neck injury, so eveyone else was held in place at the top until they got a snowmobile and sled there to get him back to the ambulance, then restarted in order from that point. Bet that messed up relative times, but what else could you do.

Did over hear one parent/coach saying there had been some discussion on the safety of the course, particularly for the middle school and HS B racers. Given the lack of snow, many of them had very little on-snow time so far this year and most of that would have been on flats, so little chance to train on how to handle down-hills.

Some laps around what's left at Gunstock - god bless GNA and Andy Howe...
Snow gun was going and Andy had his tractor out, putting more snow out on the trails. Set up of the snow gun did cause me to have to come to a stop each lap, turn sideways and step over the water hose, but it beat having to go out for a run.

Very hardpacked, nay, on the verge of icy, with a couple of sketchy corners amd a few spots with a bit of grit, but that's what rock skis are for.

Worked on some V2 and V2 alt.

Trail run in the slush at RV Farm. Temps in the high 40s, so it was wet and sloppy. Footing was variable, glad I was wearing studs. Otherwise would have been on my backside several times.

Saw quite a few folks out there.
