Gunstock XC is open - with a 510 meter loop. At least it has a bit of climb on it and some nice downhill.
Warm and light rain, should have put in my contacts. A few other folks out there - but not so many that it was feeling crowded.

Trail run at Gunstock - getting out to the new section I'm marking for narrow trails and running the sections I've completed.

I like this area the best - more open with less clearing required. Will probably add in a few more chunks.

More trail work - had Jon with me, who was tremendously helpful for some for the 2-person moving of larger deadfall. Got quite a bit more done - two sections are now usable, just need a couple feet of snow - which is not looking good in the next week and a half.
Need to consider alternate date options - or maybe go with set it and leave it up for a couple of weeks for folks to do when they can.

Clearing narrow trails at Gunstock. A lot of sawing, clipper work and hauling. Feeling pretty trashed at the end.
Network is starting to take shape.

More round and round on the Robbie Mills fields. Gunstock XC has skiing available from 7:00 -8:30 am at the base of the downhill slopes, until they opn for the day - just haven't been able to get my self together and out the door.

Had to chase off a flock of geese - disturbing the minimal snow cover and leaving landmines behind. Goose shit is not good for glide.
Fortunately they were ready to leave anyways - not sure who would have won - the dozen of them, or me with long pointy sticks in my hands.

Not much snow cover, so back over to the Robbie Mills fields.
Some skating around in circles and some double poling up the incline by the tree line.
Was supposed to be calm, but an increasing breeze from the NW made it less and less pleasant.

Trail work in the area between the Rock Loop and the Knoll Loop - a few sections will be pretty hairy going down - will depend on snow depth. Hope Gunstock will add these as snowshoe or back-country ski trails and use them in future years.

Went over to Gunstock to check on trail conditions.
Talked to Neal and Paul - they've been skiing around the base of hte alpine slopes - Paul said he got in 10 hour so far this week.

Been a lot fo work done on trimming back on the side of trails - should help snow make it all the way to the ground instead of sticking to the branches.

A small pile of snow at the far end of the stadium - just hasn't been cold enough to make much.

Got the OK for a ski-o on 7 January - will do a "clinic" at noon-ish. Paul was alos psyched about adding some European style trails - if I mark them, he'll get teh snowmobile, with ginzu if possible, around to groom.

Ran for the first part, GPSing the distance for course 1 of the Gunstock Wednesday Ski series courses. Came in right at 2.85 k, which is what I calculated from the adjusted measurement from the map.

Did the snoeshoe course next, not a lot of trail in many places. Had to follow the fading streamers and move alot of deadfall out of the way. Headed up Cobble and noticed my heart was really hammering. Backed of to mostly a walk, but was feeling lightheaded. Had to stop and sit down for a bit near the top, was not seeing straight. Close to blacking out - almost called home to have someone come find me.
Got going again when I started to feel chilled, but not feeling real stable. Not sure what was going on - headed home rather than doing the roller skiing I'd been planning on.

Running a couple of the courses that Paul from Gunstock wants to use for a Wednesday race series this year. Had distances as measured on the map, wanted to compare GPS track.

GPS seems to be about 5% shorter - will go with that for published lengths.

He has three ski loops - one is just under 3k staying on the race trails on the N side of Cobble, second is 3.95 - 4.2k going around Cobble, heading S on Birch, then cutting over to Maple and back in. Difference is where you cut from Cobble to Birch - sent him maps for both options.
Third is on the other side of the road, much flatter on the lanes and Brook run, just over 2 km.
Snowshoe loop goes on the new Lynx trail, going around the E side of Cobble Mtn, then up over Cobble Crown. Right around 3 km, with a whole lot of climb.

Ran 2nd and 3rd loops, will do first course and the snowshoe trail later.
