Hard fast conditions for an evening ski.
Was a bit apprehensive on some of the downhills- so was checking my speed a bit - no one else around to find me if I take a header off into the woods.
Got back to my car and the night security guy was there - told to pass me a message that after hours skiing is frowned upon - except for the times when it's not. Guess it was tonight.

A few more trails opened up today that they carted snow onto for yesterday's races. Very hard and very fast conditions. Unevenness on a couple of the downhills - a bit nerve wracking, so did them 4 or 5 times...

A bit breezy, so had on a wiondbreaker over a couple of layers - was warming up more than I wanted to be, so took off one inner layer and was more comfortable on the uphills - still breezy and cool on the downhills.

After a bit of snow, some ice on top, then a lot of rain conditions are a but problematic.
Races going on at Gunstock today - 700+ HS kids - so trails are closed. Debated going over to watch, but other stuff going on.

Wanted to get out and do something. Hadn't been to Chemung for a while. Brought both Icebugs and snowshoes to be prepared for whatever.
When I got to the parking lot, looked like no one had been out since it stopped, but the trail seemed to be packed, but there was enough snow on the sides to punch through the crust - so went with snowshoes.

Didn't really need them for the first part, but when I headed up the purple trail, not many folks had been on it, so was glad for the extra floatation. Was above freezing, so the ice coating the trees was starting to come down.
One face plant coming down a hill - cleats snagged, hit both knees and both hands. Knee felt sore for a bit, but was OK by the end. Hard to follow the trail in several spots, between no one else having been on it, a lot of small branches down, sporadic blazes and a few bent over hemlocks blocking sight lines.

Gunstock - evening ski again. Some HS team just loading into their bus as I got there. Had the trails to myself, other than the grooming crew moving snow around the stadium in preparation for the Saturday HS race.

Started snowing as I was about to leave. Would get excited, but forecast is for it to change to ice, then rain.

What had been light snow in the morning turned to freezing drizzle during the afternoon, then just rain as I left work.
Contemplated bagging it, but wanted to do at least something.
Trail run on packed snow at RV Farms, fog lower down, but less towards the top of the hill.
Was prepared to be completely miserable, but had a good time.

All around Gunstock - hit everything that was groomed, some of it twice or more.
Started off with 20 minutes on Brook Run and the Lanes - working on V2 on those long gradual uphills.
Then across the road - they'd taken the big machine around Cobble - pulled a bit of grit up in places. Rock Loop was nice, Knoll not open. Birch was sweet, then up Firecut and down Oak, up the steep section of Maple extension, left onto Firecut for a hundred meters or so, then reversed and down that nice swooping curve - at the end of the glide, reversed again, through the field, up Oak, back on Firecut and onto Maple.
A bit sketchy coming down the S curve, but survived. Blasted down the rest of the way, then reversed once I hit Cobble. Back up the first half of Maple, took the cutoff, left on Birch, then down the Cobble S curve. Just a bit of grit, then kept on going beside the road. One bad section, really ought to get some snow shoveled onto it.
Was thinking about doing the longer race loop I'd mapped out for Paul - stadium, out Quiver, Cobble, left onto Birch, right onto the Cutoff, right onto lower Maple. Rather than continuing straight onto the bad section by the road, took a right up the Cobble S curve, and checked Wood Loop. Back onto Cobble in reverse, mostly so I could do the two nice downhills.

ahr:146 max:160 shoes: '07 Fischer Classic White-Yell

Perfect hard blue wax day. Softer classic skis were perfect.
Didn't get over to Gunstock until mid-afternoon, had warmed up into the upper teens, versus very low teens earlier. About 3" of dry fluffy powder had fallen throughout the day.
Set tracks on the race trails with a good base were terrific. Checked out Crossbow and Longbow, which have had some man-made snow spread on them, but it hasn't been groomed out smooth yet. A few folks had been on them prior to me, so there was a semblance of tracks set.
Then set out further around Cobble - was a bit scratchy up the hill as Paul had said it would be, but then was very nice. They'd packed it with a roller behind a snowmobile prior to the new snow, so was very nice. Headed S on Birch, then did the Oak loop, which hadn't been packed, but someone had broken track ahead of me. Back around the way I'd come, then one lap on the set race track for fun.

XC Ski - Skate 33:16 intensity: (1:19 @0) + (1:59 @1) + (1:37 @2) + (22:57 @3) + (5:24 @4) 6.3 km (5:17 / km) +79m 4:58 / km
ahr:148 max:160 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Decided I wanted to do some skating as well, so changed to dry socks and gloves. Paul and Neal were heading out, so got sucked into skiing with them. Most of my skiing is a solitary endeavor, so wasn't sure how it would go skiing in a small pack. My technique is better than Paul's, but he's high energy, and Neal is a great skier, much younger, and also high energy. Also, they didn't just finish over an hour of classic skiing.

Had a great time. Paul started out in the lead, with Neal right behind. Was able to relax and tuck right in and had no problem keeping up. Was doing more V2 than normal, and staying very relaxed. Neal took the lead heading up the first Cobble hill and surged well ahead. Was able to stay right on Paul's heels with a lot less effort than he was putting out. NIce and relaxed but pretty fast on the gentle downhill past the pond, then agin right on Paul's heels up the next small hill. Neal had dropped back and was right behind me, but stayed relaxed and doing well. Paul and I were breathing hard on the second half of Birch on the long hill. Looped around in the fieild, then I lead back along Birch. Downhill was fast, and did well on the uphill. Not sure if I was pushing harder because I was in the lead, but was starting to tire. Got kidded about a minor snowplow going into the hairpin right back onto Cobble, what the heck, I'm old and cautious. Stayed in the lead beside the marsh and up the hill to the start of the Knoll loop, then pulled over to let them by. Neal took the donwhill on one foot - impressive balance. All were pushing pretty good on the long uphill, but I was getting sloppy. Downhill was awesome.

Pretty beat and a couple of fingers were getting cold, so called it a day.

Evening ski at Gunstock with the Bow HS team - they stayed mostly on the stadium - lower Broadhead loop with the lights, so I was mostly on Dry Fire and Quiver, although as I was reversing a section, all of a sudden all of them are coming at me, skiing in the dark.

Was cold and getting colder - mid-teens and dropping.

Didn't stay too long with the cold, and we have the grandkids overnight - need to get back to read bedtime stories.

XC Ski - Skate race (Ski-O) 1:03:10 intensity: (9 @0) + (27 @1) + (2:32 @2) + (57:55 @3) + (2:07 @4) *** 12.46 km (5:04 / km) +167m 4:45 / km
ahr:149 max:158 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Ski-O at Great Glen. Super course by Ernst - a lot of good route choice challenges.
I like the trail network - no super steep hills to climb up, but nice downhills that are just fun to blast down.
1 - stayed right out of the tunnel
2- up the snowshoe trail towards the building, but couldn't see the control. Thought it might be tucked around the S side of the bldg, but no. Looked back and saw it on the fence half behind the porta-potty. Lost 30 seconds.
3 - Around to the right - a bit confused by the side wnowshoe trail cutting across the field.
4 - stayed right, around the field, verified lcoatiosn on controls 13 and 5 on the way. Decided to stay on the skate trail and loop around approaching from the N, rather than risking the snowshoe trail cut over - wouldn't have saved that much distance. Narrow trail not too bad.
5 - Doglegged out, then back down to the edge fo the field the way I came up - some nice downhills to study upcoming legs. Took right (W) side of field then over to 5.
6 - Kept going straight to the other side of the field , to the skate trail. RIght around the pond, then took the loop counter-clockwise. Skis really slow in the shady part - snow very cold and dry. Faster on the parts that had warmed up.
7 - Kept on the field almost to the tubing hill, then up and cut in. Not interested in climbing on a snowshoe trail on skate skis unless absolutely necessary. Glad I could see it from the main trail.
8 - around to the left, very quick leg,
9 - A lot of options - pick one and execute. Decided to stay left, go past 12, then decide at the next junction whether to cut down or stay lef tand cut donw at the follwing junction. Could see the uphill on the left option and it didn't look too bad, so went up and took the next right (3rd coming out of 8) and then straight across and cut over by 4. RIght, then left, then follow the trail around and hope a 3 contour climb isn't too bad - it wasn't.
Small trail was very visible - could see the control from the trail - double pole in.
10 - keep going straight then left. Debated left versus right options, focus on where the small traail leaves the skate trail to go to 10, not the control location itself. Decided on right, as much as I figured I'd come back that way to 11, as any determination of distance or climb versus the left route. Sopme nice downhills and the uphills weren't killers. Took the small trail to approach 10 from the NW.
11 Doglegged back onto the skate trails and back the way I'd just come. Shouted warnings approaching a couple of the blind downhill curves - plenty of chance for a head-on with someone coming up. Took the first small cut in - a few rocks and a bit longer than the 2d approach, but still faster I think.
12 - To the skate trail, left, right, straight across, up the hill then left.
13 - Took the left route, back up a bit, right down the hill, left, right, to the field and to the far side.
14 - running out of steam, but pretty straight forward.
15 - around to the right
back through the tunnel (wonder whose job it is to haul the snow in here??)
Pretty good effort - skis could have been faster on the codl & dry sections, could have worked a couple of hills a bit harder, some routes might not have been the absolute best, but all in all a good day.
(And I got Aims by 5 seconds!)

XC Ski - Skate warm up/down 8:00 [3] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Testing skis and seeing how my body would react to low single digit temps. First pair were really dragging, so swapped to the ones I'd used yesterday - seemed faster so went with them.
Had wazed them with some Swix Blue LF, probably a warmer wax than I needed, but much of that could have been scrapped off with the hard conditions at Gunstock.
12 PM

XC Ski - Skate race (Ski-O) 33:55 intensity: (20 @0) + (51 @1) + (2:15 @2) + (26:11 @3) + (4:18 @4) *** 5.28 km (6:25 / km) +110m 5:49 / km
ahr:149 max:161 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Windblown ski-o, part 1 - the Green course. Cold and my skis were dogs.
Nice course by Aims.
Time started in front of Aims inside the building - close to a minute to get outside, and get my skis and poles on.
Almost to #1 and realized I didn't have a punch card - map edge was sticking out so used that.
A few sub-optimal route choices - long uphills on narrow, loose trails are not good - would have been faster to take a skate trail around.
Then when I did take the skate trail around closer to the end, Alar made up 15-20 seconds by taking the shorter narrow trail...

XC Ski - Skate race (Ski-O) 18:50 intensity: (54 @1) + (2:43 @2) + (15:01 @3) + (12 @4) **** 2.88 km (6:33 / km) +37m 6:09 / km
ahr:146 max:156 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

And part 2 to make it the Blue course - a 2-sided sprint. 6 controls, then flip over the map and another 5, all in a pretty tight area.
1 PM

XC Ski - Skate warm up/down 37:31 intensity: (1:40 @0) + (4:40 @1) + (19:50 @2) + (11:21 @3) ** 5.6 km (6:42 / km) +115m 6:05 / km
ahr:136 max:151 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

And some cruising around afterwards. Warmed up a bit, so skis were a bit faster. Found some good downhills and stayed off uphill narrow trails, so my time/km is pretty close to the races - was definitely taking it easier for this.

ahr:141 max:156 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Putzing around and warm-up at Gunstock. A few folks out including Tracey and Steve Olafsen with the Inter-lakes crew.
They "groomed" more than just the short loop with man-made snow under it, but there was a lot of dirt pulled up into it. Not sure if they used the big machine, or snowmobile with the sled - should have just rolled.
Race loop is in good shape - nice and firm base.

XC Ski - Skate race 18:59 intensity: (4 @1) + (12 @2) + (12:55 @3) + (5:48 @4) 4.72 km (4:01 / km) +67m 3:45 / km
ahr:154 max:161 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Race 1 of the Gunstock Nordic Cup. 4 laps around a 1.2 k loop, fortunately some up and down and corners to keep it interesting.
4:27
4:49
4:55
4:47
Made a bit more challenging with the tourers on the trails, but worked my way around them with no altercations.
Started shortly after an older guy who was beginning his second loop, should have given him more of a lead.
Was close to chilled for much of it, another layer might have been good. Was too tense - couldn't relax and really get into it - need to do more of these to work on that.
2 PM

XC Ski - Classic warm up/down 27:56 intensity: (12:36 @1) + (10:58 @2) + (4:22 @3) 4.53 km (6:10 / km) +32m 5:58 / km
ahr:129 max:144 shoes: '84 Fischer Classic Wax White-

And switch over to classic for round 2.
Had thrown some Swix Blue LF on top of whatever, if anything, was still on them for glide wax, then Swix Blue klister with a bit of Swix Blue hard wax on top.
Kick seemed ok, but technique is not where it should be.
3 PM

XC Ski - Classic race 22:18 intensity: (16 @1) + (3:41 @2) + (18:21 @3) 4.7 km (4:44 / km) +73m 4:24 / km
ahr:144 max:149 shoes: '84 Fischer Classic Wax White-

And the time trial. 4 laps on same loop.
5:22
5:31
5:41
5:44
Same older guy was on his 2d lap a bit ahead of me. Worked past him on the first uphill on Dry Fire. Tense on this as well, wasn't getting a good wax set when striding up hillls, so ended up using my arms more than I should have.
Some congestion with the St Pauls School team and their coach, but got through with minimal disruption.
Got passed on lap 2 by Sara from the XC Center, she was working the uphills much better than I was.
Not thrilled with the non-negative splits, but with no one to chase (I let Sara pull away to fast to take full benefit). It is what it is - as with the skate time trial, need to do more of these. Max HR not impressive either - maybe do the classic first and work it harder?
Paul is advertising this as a 9 week series, best of 6 to count. Has Wednesday as main race day with Saturday as a backup. Don't think I'll make too many Wednesdays, hope I can fit in enough Saturdays.

Note

Had my snowshoes with me, but didn't have the energy to go for the trifecta.

Turnout a bit low, glad Steve and Tracey came and pulled in several of their InterLakes crew.
Everyone seemed to have a good time. Reflecting on the courses, there were a few too many dog legs on the medium, might have been different if there was snow and folks were skiing. Too much focus on individual legs, needed a second check for overall flow.

Stopped by the stadium for a little skiing - did 8 loops. A few other golks out there - dodging around a couple small boys out with Mom & Dad - they kept plugging right along.
Feeling the long run from yesterday in my legs - so was taking it easy.

Stopped in to chat with Paul and Neal - no snow of any significance until maybe next week - plan is to hold the ski-o on foot this Saturday.
Thye hope to have Dry Fire and more of Quiver open for skiing - will have to do a bit of redesign to keep folks away from there. Do some ski-o on foot, then some skiing - hope that will draw in a few folks.

Trail run with Alar and Ernst over Pack Monadnock. Start and finish at Miller State Park on Rt 101. North on the Wapack trail to the south, then north peaks, looped east on the Cliff Trail, back along Wapack to sounth peak, then down the Marion Davis (?) trail.

Was planned as a 2 hour run - Alar and Ernst could probably have pulled that off - but someone is always the slowest in a group and today was my turn. Fast pace from the get-go, and just couldn't get warmed up and relaxed huffing and puffing up the rocky trail. Probably had a bit too much stuff in the pack - didn't need a full 2-liter water bladder - and could feel the extra weight (plus the few extra pounds I'm packing right now).
Was ok for the most part on the flats and downhills, but the smallest inclines were kicking my butt.

Also should have changed to the Icebugs, rather than the non-studded New Balance 910s. Would have been a lot of clicking on rocks, but more sure footing on the numerous icy patches would have been great.

Should probably take out 10-15 minutes total time for breaks, etc, which would drop the per km times a but, but what the heck.

Do need to get out and do these more often, and with a partner or group to push the pace a bit, as I do tend to get complaicant on my own.
