Chemung trails with Di & Pete. Went to Crockett's ledge, then on to the White Mtn overlook - tremendous views - clear skies.
A bit chilly, but was dressed OK.
Thin snow cover, really didn't need the snowshoes, except for traction.

XC Ski - Skate warm up/down 32:15 [2]
shoes: '10 Salomon Equipe 8 Skate Ski

Warming up and coolling down on the limited trails open at Gunstock. Decided I wanted to do at least the skate time trial.
Felt pretty cold - not a lot of energy.

XC Ski - Skate race 17:44 [4] 4.5 km (3:56 / km)
shoes: '10 Salomon Equipe 8 Skate Ski

Three laps starting in front of the clubhouse, Dryfire to the end, loop back along Quiver, then up on lower Broadhead to the clubhouse.
Wasn't at 100%, not well focused. Had to slalom through Jane's group of beginners each lap, not enough snow on the lanes for lessons there, so they were on the small hill on Quiver.

Craftsbury Ski-O. Very nice course by Adrian Owens - a lot of good route choice options.

Slow out of the start - almost took off in the wrong direction.
Lost 2:30 on 2d control - shoould have gone around all the way to the far side, then just duck in, punch and out again. Instead took a snowshoe trail coming in from the north, looking for a cutover on my right, another quick right and it should be right there - only problem was I didn't see the cutover on my right. Ended up out by a wide groomed trail - turned around and back in, saw a set of boot prints, decided that could be a last minute trail setting, took it and saw the control.
Lost close to 10 minutes on 7-8. Only logical route was to take a snowshoe trail up over a knoll, across a flat area, trail should loop up to the right. Over the knoll, across the flat area and saw Melanie Sergiev on foot, poles in hand looking at the ground - had dropped her SI stick and was looking for it in the snow. Some words of encouragement, past her skis, trail heading up the hill, but a much more travelled trail continuing straight ahead. Hmmm - well, go with where everyone else went - worng choice. Traial conitnues for a few hundred more meters, had ot step over a thigh high log, then the trail ended by the edge of a marsh. Maybe I misssed the contorl near where Melanie was - this looks like a deadend trail past the control. Back up, went all the way back to the knoll when i figures I should just take the trail up the hill. Sure enough - there it was.

Not as cold as the thermometer said it was - a bit over dressed. Hands were sweating in the lobster mitts, but glad I had pulled a buff over my head, covering my ears and neck.

Nice ski-O at Grafton Ponds by Aims.
He mentioned that both the Red and Blue had been shortened due to trail closure - decided to stay on Red. Manged to get out on the course without running over any BKL racers - seemed like they were everywhere. Mostly good route choices - other than the next to last control. Had decided to take a snowshoe trail diagonally down the hill from it to the last control, avoiding a couple contour climb via the other obvious route. Was so concerned about making sure I didn't ski past the small trail that I never punched the control.
Would have been first (of 2), but gave up the win to Ken Walker.

Weird weather. Was mid-30s when we left Brattleboro, then dropped to about 26 at Grafton. Warmed up, tested skis, etc and then the wind picked up and the temperature rose. Very gusty - made getting the map into the holder, both at the start and the map exchange very tough (and time consuming).
Felt a few raindrops while I was out.

After downloading and stopping kicking myself over the DQ, decided to do Green.
Wind was still strong and it was a mix of rain and big wet snow flakes. Skis had been OK, but snow was getting much wetter. Rubbed on some CH10 over the LF7, corked it in and brushed it out. Seemed to do the trick.
Changed to a pair of dry gloves and headed back to the start. Had been to most of the control already, some common routes, some done in reverse of the Red. Focused on staying relaxed, which worked pretty well.

A lot of fun.

Ski-O race 23:38 [4]

Meh.
Started my watch at -1:00, so I wouldn't have to mess with it at teh start, then hit the start stop button when the timer beeped, so no track...
Turned over the map and couldn't find 1. Had seen Aims, starting 2 min in front of me, head up the hill to the right and when I finally found 1, it was more to the left - what was I missing?? Got over that, but was not skiing smoothly. Ok to 1m 2m 3 in the field. No one had cut through over the stonewall from 3 to 4, so went down and came back up the wider trail. Blew down the narrow trail - was OK to 5, up the non-grromed section and then left to 6, was too tight up the hill, losing a lot of time.
Past 13 then didn't make the corner, so kept going straight on the narrow trail past 8 then almost wiped out Aims as he came up the snowshoe trail.
Punched 7, then my eye follwoed a line back up the hill and I took off - towards 13. Was almost up to the small central clearing, when I took another look at my map to confirm which way I needed to go - damn, flip around, left onto the dashed trail and up - lost about a minute.
Struggled up the dashed trail towards 9, saw Jan Merka catching up to me.
Couldn't relax and ski easily towards 10 - just a long slog.
Coming down from 12, knew I didn't want to go past 9, so was thinking stay left, and I did, back onto the dashed trail past 11, then narrow trail to 10 and back onto the wide trail. Downhill was a bit sketchy, so not carrying a lot of speed when I turned onto the narrow trail past 6 to 13.
Quick check to make sure I wasn't missing another loop, then 14, 15 and in.

Evening run at RV Farms. Warm during the day, but starting to cool down. At lunch, car thermometer said 55F, and I believe it. Snow pack shrinking fast. A lot of bare spots, glad I had on spiked shoes for traction.

A bit surprised I didn't turn an ankle - started thinking about that partway through the run. Uneven ground and inconsistent density - good training if you get through it unscathed.

Classic time trial.
Silver klister seemed to work pretty good. Didn't seem to drag, other than when i was hitting dirt clods. Would have been nice to have a consistent track all the way around, but was able to fuddle through.

First lap about 35 seconds faster than the second.

A short break, then switched over to skating. Think these were stillwaxed with CH10 from winter storage, rubbed some CH8 over that and ironed it in. Seemed to do the trick.
Seemed to be skiing in bursts - have lost the feel for skiing at speed for extended distances and carryign it up hills, around corners, etc.

Noticed that my max speed was faster on classic skis than on skate skis - flex or grind??

Second lap slower by about 30 seconds than the first.

Evening ski at Gunstock - snow cover is getting thin is a few spots, but with a headlamp, often don't see that until you're already in the patch of gravel/dirt.
After a brief warmup on some of the Cobble race trails, headed out counter-clockwise on Cobble, then out/up Maple. Not too bad, even the s-curve still has reasonable cover. Did some back and forth on the uppper part fo Maple, then the Oak loop, coming down along the stream. Back along Birch (a couple of bare spots appearing along it), then took the cutover and into the ski-o maze.
Think I need to change the map to show these as snowshoe trails, rather than narrow groomed. Until/unless I can get someone to take a snowmobile through there with a sled, better to under promise.
A lot of fun - the uphills were OK, as the snow cover is not too bad. Much deeper and ski tips getting snagged will be more of a problem. Downhills OK, although I was rather wimpy - using my poles in front of me to slow me down.
Picked up a few extra gouges - not all the rocks are covered.
After about 18 minutes on narrow trails, finished up continuing ccw on Cobble, after popping out on the Wood Loop.

Evening snowshoe sorta-run at Gunstock. Hitting some trails again to widen them, then some others for the first time. Went S on Maple, up the S-curve, then up the hill - a bit more snow with that extra elevation and NE exposure. Back down the same way, then did the short trail that drops from just above the S-curve and hits at the lower crest. Not sure if I'll use these for ski-o, rather steep and gnarly.

Slow going on sections, but able to get in some bursts of speed here and there.

Brief chat with the roving security guy when I got back to my car. No hassle or anything, just a friendly how-ya-doing, glad you're out of the woods.

Testing wax and seeing if I wanted to skate or have some kick.
Opted for quasi-classic, concerned about getting up narrow hills on completely slick skis.

Ski-O race 41:56 intensity: (10 @0) + (5 @1) + (6:10 @2) + (32:37 @3) + (2:54 @4) ** 6.37 km (6:35 / km) +165m 5:50 / km

Ski-O Red course.
A few bobbles, bad route to 1, then lost 2 minutes on #8 when I took the first right instead of the second, didn't dawn on me that I was on a wide trail versus a narrow one, then ended up on the wrong side of the pond. No one had bushwhacked across yet, so flipped around, and back a hundred meters or so.
Nice course design - good mix of wide and narrow, with some cut over options.
4th place, about a minute and a half out of first. About 30 seconds behind Ernst, then Ari Ofsevits in front of him and James Tasker taking the win. If only...

Ski-O race 21:05 intensity: (1 @0) + (37 @1) + (3:15 @2) + (15:11 @3) + (2:01 @4) ** 3.56 km (5:56 / km) +61m 5:28 / km
ahr:146 max:159 shoes: '05 White/Red/Black Fischer Sk

Then did the yellow course as a sprint.

Had been to each of the controls, so it was easier, plus a chance to not make some previous mistakes.
Think skating would have been faster on Red - only one uphill where it would have made a big difference, and as Aims pointed out, there was a viable route around that cut sout some of the climb and was almost all on wider trails.

Think I won this - got Ernst by a few seconds.

Gunstock after hours. Had the place to myself. Most sections looked like they hadn't been groomed for a day or so, probably due to the thin cover. Dirty patches getting larger and a few more stones sticking through. Had one face plant on an uphill when my left ski stopped on a rock - better than on a downhill.
Tried to keep it calm and relaxed - by HR always spikes on uphills.

Snowshoe 55:21 intensity: (1:20 @0) + (20:14 @1) + (21:17 @2) + (12:30 @3) 3.96 km (13:58 / km) +66m 12:54 / km

Skiing wasn't enough, so swapped over to snowshoes and went out to hit some of my ski-o trails.
Predictably awkward on the first bit. Always feels like the pivot point is a bit too far forward on my foot, just behind my toes rather than right under the ball.

Might have been better to have had on larger snowshoes, since part of my goal was to pack out trails, the small footprint of the race shoes makes for less snow touched with each step. Had some challenges finding the right line in a few of the more open sections, need to remember which are the right trails for after the next snowfall to not keep doing short deadends on non-trails. Need more snow before skiing on many of these sections can be done without turning a good set of skis into rock skis.

Saw quite a few animal tracks out there - I know there's a few porcupines in the area, maybe some cat-like tracks as well.

Headlamp went dead towards the end. None of the getting dimmer, then flickering out - LED went from all on to absolutely nothing. Fortunately after about 30 seconds realized that with the low cloud cover and the amount of light reflecting from the downhill area just adjacent that there was plenty of light to see what I needed to see.

Felt much more graceful once I was back on the groomed trails and running back in.

Morning ski at Gunstock before some family activities. Groomer had hit a lot of it overnight, so was in good shape.

About 14 miuntes tooling around to warm up, then did the ~ 4 km timetrial loop in 17:15. Need to work on relazing when I'm at "race pace". I can feel myself tightening up and workign hard against myself, but with no net increase in speed.

Saw Neal during my cool down - stopped and chatted for a while - he's cool on most of the proposed ski-o trails, but concerned about soem of the higher up stuff where someone would come barrel-assing down a 3 foot wide trail.

With Jennifer in the backyard - she is really catching on well. Persistent, must have fallen back on her butta couple down times, but pops back up (sometimes with Grampie's help) and keep on going. Amazing how many new trails we can create in under a half acre.

Had a lot of fun.
