Late morning ski at Gunstock - should have gotten out earlier - warming up quite a bit in spots and slowing down.
A few more bare spots and larger ones than yesterday, but still plenty of trail open.

A few folks out and about.

Late day ski-O from memory at Gunstock. Think a few routes were sub-optimal, but still went well. Excellent snow cover still - warm and soft where the late afternoon sun had hit, but firm and fast in the shade.
Snowshoe trails ok, but poles were punching through, which made it tough. Snow has settled enough that bushwhacking was OK.

Didn't get out until early afternoon and things had warmed up considerably. Had older skis and mapholder with me, but decided to see if I cojuld just ski all of the trails on the E side of the road. Think I hit all of the significant sections, except the upper most trails on the N side of Cobble. They'd groomed those after last week's storm, but haven't been up there yet this year.

Felt a lot slower with the warmer conditions, although i did get some speed coming down sections in the shade.

Saw tracks around a few controls - ran into Neal and his wife, he said Steve O had done the course in the morning. Appears that some punches have disappeared off a few controls.

Plan at this point is that they'll be open and grooming through at least next weekend - will play it by ear after that.

Sweet - new skis and great conditions for their inaugural outing!
Broke down after a couple years of urging by the guys at Gunstock to get a good pair of skis.
Wonderful conditions - everything is open and well groomed.
Neal hadn't had a chance to wax them, so running bare, but felt very fast and smooth.
Here's to a week or more of winter still to get out and play!!

"Grooming" the snowshoe trails at Gunstock. Superb conditions - still a solid base underneath with a lot of good powder on top. Can tell where the sun hits as it crusts up. Started in daylight, finished just after it got dark, but with the moon out and just a few clouds, had enough visibility to see what I needed.

First run in a long time. Should have gone with my initial instinct and worn studded shoes.
Main loop at Ahern was well packed with a dusting of powder on top in most places. Only glare ice in a couple spots, like along the lake coming into the beach area from the south, where it's sloped. Almost went down there a couple times.
In the woods along the bike trail was even worse in many spots - glare ice under the pines, went down a couple times hard. Tried to stay on the crust to the sides, but wasn't always possible.

Was fun anyways - with 12-16" of snow coming in - not sure when the next run will be.

A few areas where the map will need touching up prior to the June Ahern event - logged area to the left heading up the hill towards Robbie Mills field - sure wish I had a lidar base to just re-do the whole area.

Hiking hills 2:16:29 [1] 5.05 km (27:00 / km) +449m 18:42 / km

Hiking up the W side of Gunstock on what will be the Orange Trail. Went up the old section of the trail and out to the overlook, then up to the top. Saw where the crew had marked a new approach to the summit, as well as a re-route of the Brook Trail to hit this new approach, rather than the final scramble up the rocks.

Marked an option a little bit below for the Brook Trail piece.

Went down and re-marked some parts of the trail that circles around the W side of the summit and heads over towards the Ridge Trail over Rowe. Found some old flagging, did some up and down along sections where the trail shouldn't go, then re-marked it on the way back.

Nice ski around Gunstock - wonderful conditions. A few small sections with gravel popping up, but overall firm and well groomed.

Stopped in and chatted with Neal - ended up getting a new set of skis. With 10-12" forecast for mid-week, might be able to use them next weekend.

Latest iteration of the ski-o courses - on rock skis, but really didn't need to be.

Was waxed for warmer than conditions were, they'd groomed after 1-2" of powder had fallen and it hadn't warmed up at all in the woods.

Nice solid base - crust cruising in the woods - got to cut a few corners, opened my eyes up to a few more options for next year.

XC Ski - Skate warm up/down 15:21 intensity: (9 @0) + (36 @1) + (1:38 @2) + (12:40 @3) + (18 @4) 3.3 km (4:39 / km) +51m 4:19 / km

Second time at Windblown this year - Aims did a good job at mixing it up - on different sectionsof the map, or goping in the opposite directino from last time.
Hard and fast in some areas, powdery and slower in others.
Just didn't have a lot of oomph today. Some sketchy narrow downhills, took my skis of for one of them - should have just cut through the woods to the wider trail rather than running down the narrow trail.
3d behind Ari Ofsevits and Mika L-K.

Ski-O warm up/down 28:37 intensity: (37 @0) + (2:30 @1) + (9:43 @2) + (15:47 @3) 5.37 km (5:20 / km) +125m 4:46 / km

Evening ski at Gunstock.
Had been warm during the day, but was freezing up - with a lot of tracks / ruts. Hard, fast and uneven - not necessarily a good combination.

Had fun anyways - took it easy and kept it short.

Setting out 1 control and validating the others were in place. About 2" of nice powder on top of nice hard pack. Too bad it was warming up - would be great if it stayed just like this.

Then several hours of helping out at the GNA paintball biathlon - a lot of funs to observe, especially the younger kids.

Ended up with 6 Ski-oers, 5 regulars and one enthusiastic junior from the Keene area, who did pretty well.

Snowshoeing in the maze trails - 1 pass on most of it. A lot of snow out there. Most of these trails not a factor for the planned Sunday event, but good to keep them in place for the self-serve courses.

Late day spin around Gunstock to relax a bit. Checked to make sure controls were still where they were supposed to be

Nice conditions.
