XC Ski - Skate 59:55 intensity: (52 @0) + (3:11 @1) + (28:45 @2) + (27:07 @3) 12.33 km (4:52 / km) +267m 4:23 / km

Ski session at Gunstock. They'd groomed yesterday's light snowfall in with the underlying base - made for interesting conditions.
Corn snow mixed with warm powder - hard packed, glazed track in some places, making for great speed, then suddenly the powder is predominate, putting on the brakes and making me wonder if I'm about to go headlong off the side of the trail.

Run 32:29 intensity: (3:42 @0) + (10:48 @1) + (15:16 @2) + (2:43 @3) 3.64 km (8:55 / km) +107m 7:46 / km
ahr:127 max:146 shoes: IceBug SISU olx

And then a run at Ahern on a mix of fairly hard packed single track, some less packed single track and snowmobile trail that was some ice/snow and mud/bare ground.
Saw quite a few folks out, most with dogs. Or saw quite a few dogs, all with their humans and a few stray humans without dogs.

Much colder than yesterday. Almost dressed well for conditions, but certain parts of my body started getting chilled after a bit, windscreen briefs would have been good.
Hard and fast conditions - well groomed. Advertised as Fat Bike Day, so evidence of quite a few mtn bikers taking advantage of that, mostly subtle tire tracks. Saw a few of them out there, the rest must have been in the yurt warming up.

Felt pretty energized for most of it - hitting a hill hard is much more satisfying when you have some glide - slogging sucks with a non-slick ski.

Garmin died towards the end, so exact time and distance estimated.
Great conditions, but got a late start, so it was warming up a bit. Had rubbed on a bit of T4-moly, and could feel as it was wearing off.

Crack of springtime run at RV Farms on fully snow covered trails.
Got an early start at 6:37, 8 minutes before the equinox (for some reason I thought it was at 6:35).
Glad for studded shoes. Punched through a few times on the trails less traveled, but overall an enjoyable outing.

Ski-O warm up/down 7:03 intensity: (59 @0) + (3:04 @1) + (3:00 @2) 1.48 km (4:45 / km) +17m 4:30 / km
ahr:124 max:138 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Windblown - warm and snowing. Freshly groomed - very nice where it's been chopped up, otherwise icy and skittery.

Ski-O race 1:02:48 intensity: (22 @0) + (4:33 @1) + (22:21 @2) + (35:13 @3) + (19 @4) 11.35 km (5:32 / km) +287m 4:55 / km
ahr:142 max:156 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Long course (7.4 k straight-line) - felt fast for the most part. Able to work the hills, which I haven't felt like for a while. Some of the downhills a bit terrifying.
Some minor bobbles and sub-optimal route choices.

12 PM

Ski-O race 34:12 intensity: (16 @0) + (12 @1) + (13:59 @2) + (19:45 @3) 5.92 km (5:46 / km) +125m 5:13 / km
ahr:142 max:155 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Then the Orange course - middle distance. Didn't have to go up the hill.
Had warmed up a bit, so skis were dragging. still fast and skittery on the not-recently-groomed. Not enough crust to support me on totally ungroomed.

1 PM

XC Ski - Skate 39:32 intensity: (1:29 @0) + (47 @1) + (22:34 @2) + (14:42 @3) 8.0 km (4:57 / km) +82m 4:42 / km
ahr:136 max:149 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

And kicking around some more afterwards.

Total time and distance estimated, as Garmin battery crapped out partway through.

ahr:141 max:158 shoes: '03 Yellow Fischer Skating

Evening ski - no headlamp required.
Good conditions - some wood chips and needles in some places. Firm conditions - nice where it's been groomed.

Hotel fitness room - broke a sweat, got the heart rate up a little bit, but boring as hell.

ahr:133 max:142 shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280

First run in quite a while. RV Farms on well packed trails. Some have been groomed with an ATV pulling a sled, with other trails just from foot & snowshoe traffic.
Beautiful day out.

Ski-O race 26:45 [3] 3.8 km (7:02 / km)
shoes: '10 Salomon Equipe 8 Skate Ski

Ski-O at Ken's Kingdom Valley Trails.
Started off on the long course - 12 controls, and a lot of climb. Legs weren't coordinating well with the arms, so I was struggling on all the narrow uphills.

Ed got me by over a minute and a half.

Ski-O race 11:46 [3] 2.0 km (5:53 / km)
shoes: '10 Salomon Equipe 8 Skate Ski

Then the short sprint. A couple minor bobbles and a good wipe out at the bottom of a hill I shouldn't have tried to ski down - took to long to untangle myself and get my skis under me to climb up the wall.

Just under a minute behind Ed.

Ski-O race 23:20 [3] 3.2 km (7:17 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280

Finished up with the middle length, with Phil and Ed starting a bit in front of me.
Could see both of them as I was climbing back up the hill, but with the switchbacks hard to see if I was catching up or losing time. Felt a bit better working up the hills, but Ed got me by over 2 minutes on this one.

ahr:141 max:158 shoes: '10 Salomon Equipe 8 Skate Ski

Evening outing at Gunstock. Some wicked fun downhills. Didn't quite get up to 40 km/hr - not icy and slick, just nice hard packed powder. Managed to survive the uphills - embrace the suck!
Quite a few critter footprints out there. Some appeared to be a good sized cat, the regular porcupine trails and a couple spots where deer had taken advantage of the hard packed grooming before heading back into the belly deep powder.
Starting to snow lightly as I was coming in - another beautiful evening.

ahr:140 max:160 shoes: Atomic Red Cheetahs

Loop around Cobble as a warm up, then was going to re-do yesterday's race.
While not everything was groomed after last nights snowfall, only ~2" of nice powder over well groomed base was not a problem. Breezy but moderate temps.
Mostly OK on the hills, but not a lot of oomph. More than yesterday, but still not what I was hoping for. just over 11:00 for the lap - so I was dogging it a bit.
Coming down the last big hill from Crossbow to lower Broadhead and my headlamp went out. Enough moonlight to see, and finished the lap OK, tried to swap over to the other battery, but it wasn't cooperating. Opted for a shorter out and back enjoying the moonlight and called it a day.

When I pulled into the parking area, there was a County sheriff's car sitting there. Have never seen them hanging around Gunstock before, but it is a county facility. Was waiting to get the "who are you and what are you doing here? Don't you know they close at 4:00?" Instead nothing but a smile and a wave as he drove off. 20 seconds later a Gunstock truck pulls up, the night security guy just checking all the doors. Have been spoken to by them in year's past, but again just a smile and wave as I headed across the street and put on my skis.

XC Ski - Skate race 31:00 [4] 7.0 km (4:26 / km) +130m 4:03 / km
shoes: Atomic Red Cheetahs

Paintball biathlon. Not a good ski, and even worse shooting.
OK out of the gate, but legs just felt like rubber on all the uphills. Did pass my 30 sec guy, but 15 second was long gone. Got passed sporadically by a few others.
Major wipeout coming down the swooping hill off Crossbow onto Longbow - caught an inside edge, and had plenty of time to hope there was no one too close behind me. There wasn't so no one got to witness the epicness of the wipe out, bellyflop and slide across the whole trail and over the edge into the soft powder. Lost 30-45 seconds getting myself picked up, turned around and going again, but had no momentum up what is normally a nice gradual hill to V2 up. Passed by 2 followers, one of which I was able to re-pass before the stadium. Shot 0 for 5. A bit better on the next lap, stayed up, but the uphills were not nice. Shot 1 for 5 on the second round. Last lap hurt, was trying too hard and my technique just fell apart.
Could have used the bonus time (subtract 10 seconds for each target hit). 2 guys in front of me in the results, I'd out skied. but they pulled ahead with the bonus time. Slipped from 3d to 4th in age category - sad face...
