Orienteering 3:02:51 intensity: (37:14 @0) + (57:49 @1) + (59:06 @2) + (28:42 @3) 14.09 km (12:59 / km) +193m 12:09 / km

More meandering in the Broken Ground - started off in the flat area that was my core stomping ground as a kid. The "Red Gate" is long gone, but the trails are still there.
Headed north into the more intricate parts - quite a mix. Some sections of rather bland, varying thicknesses of vegetation. Did a better job overall maintaining contact with the map.
Not quite the boulderishness of Pawtuckaway or Burnt Mtn, but some sections with a nice sprinkling of them - also found a large reentrant with some monsters and 5m+ cliffs. Some sections think with blueberry, other thicker areas of either small pine or close-packed saplings. Completed a couple more trail loops and discovered some more spurs for future exploration.

Wildlife for the day - 1 gray fox, a lot of birds (not yet an expert on these), several humans being walked by their dogs.

Orienteering 3:00:51 intensity: (1:00:01 @0) + (53:25 @1) + (1:02:53 @2) + (4:32 @3) 16.3 km (11:06 / km) +252m 10:18 / km

More running around in the Broken Ground - a really nice area overall. Had a rough plan to visit some hilltops, wander around some marshes and beaver ponds. Did some of that, then started following old logging trails and ATV trails. Lost touch with the map (2 foot contours get rather busy). Headed off cross-country again, hit a trail that was going the general direction I want to go, then hit a spot I'd been by earlier with a very distinct large depression. Resumed wandering, then headed back in. Hit stop instead of split, so the last bit of time/distance is estimated.

Matching up plots to landowners - City of Concord, State of NH, Unitil Energy, a couple of major absentee owners of wood lots, then others where I know at least the names, growing up just down the street. Definite potential for A-Meet.

Aerial photos look good going into Loudon as well - but no detailed contours past the city/town line.

Wildlife sightings - 2 deer (one I just saw the white tail heading away, other was an 8-10 pt buck chilling in a thicket about 20 feet from me until he saw me, then he bolted). 2 hunters - one in a stand, another driving empty-handed.

Belknap Range - Hiking and trail maintenance,
Camp Bell - along the Old Stage Road, up Blue Trail to Anna. Looks like I hit stop on my watch rather than a split at the base. Turned back on near top - distance and climb estimated. Cleaned out some water bars, moved some blowdowns, then tackled juniper infringing on the trail near the top.
Red Trail - Anna to Mack, just some water bar clean-outs.
Red/Orange down to Round Pond, then the Red Trail back down to the Stage Road and back to Camp Bell. Some gorgeous views coming down - right along the top of a gorge for part of the way down, then a couple of ledge overlooks - great sight lines back up the valley and over to Swett and Piper.

ahr:129 max:148 shoes: Salomon Gray Speedcross

Checking out some of the trail network in Concord's Broken Ground - my old stomping grounds...
Definite great O map potential - need to spend some more time out there further off trail.
Cool and breezy - broke a sweat, but never felt warmed up.

Orienteering race 1:22:02 intensity: (44 @0) + (12:47 @1) + (40:29 @2) + (27:16 @3) + (46 @4) 6.7 km (12:14 / km) +156m 10:58 / km
ahr:137 max:156 shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280

As a competitive race this was lousy...
As an adventure in the wet and wild - had a blast.
More major errors than I can shake a stick at. Never really felt in touch with the map.
Took way too long to dawn on me that NEOC = very short control stakes=very close to the ground.

Hiking, trail work, bushwhacking
Overlook trail up E side of Belknap/Gunstock ridge.
Bushwhacked down the gulley - some sign of old logging trail. Nice stream bed, but completely dry.

RV Farms - quicker tempo for a change - might need to re-calibrate my max HR, would have thought more of this would be zone 4

Run / hike 28:50 intensity: (7:45 @1) + (19:34 @2) + (1:31 @3) 2.48 km (11:36 / km) +192m 8:22 / km

Heading up to the overlook of the Overlook Trail to cut back some juniper infringing on the path. Most noticeable when it is cold and wet - you've tried so hard to keep your feet dry and warm, when you come upon a section where the treadway is flanked by ankle to knee high wet stuff...
It's best to remove the offending foliage when it is dry, and you have long sleeves and gloves.
Daylight optional.
Made it up while it was still light, but it was fading fast. headlamp made a big difference.
Still a bit to do, but much better than when I started.

7 PM

Run 22:06 intensity: (4:52 @0) + (3:28 @1) + (2:28 @2) + (11:18 @3) 2.44 km (9:03 / km)
ahr:133 max:153

Run back down from the overlook by headlamp.
Cool and pleasant with a 3/4 moon.
Made it down through all of the rocks, damp leaves and slippery pine needles. Was getting close to the truck on a flat level section of trail, when my right foot caught in the loop of the shoelace for my left shoe - immediate face plant.
No one around to applaud my rapid spring back to my feet and recovery and the swift completion of my run...

ahr:112 max:136

Biking along the WOW trail and the Belmont portion to Agway and back. Continue to Lakeport and to where I think the trail will head out to the Weirs. Nice way to spend part of a morning.

ahr:142 max:158 shoes: Salomon Red/Yellow SpeedCross3

Ahern - up along the edge of the state school buildings to the top of the hill, around the woods part of the HS XC trail, then drop to the lake. Up the small power line trail and to the top of the loop trail. A few very short pickups to remind myself I can move fast. Checked out the beaver pond near the parking lot - very low water.

Run hills 1:03:40 [3] 6.36 km (10:01 / km) +301m 8:06 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 315

Evening trip up Mt Rowe from Gilford Elementary. 4 humans, 3 dogs - all well behaved.
Misjudged sunset and cloud cover - glad I had a small flashlight with me. Gets dark under the hemlocks and pines.

Run 57:16 [2] 6.75 km (8:29 / km) +152m 7:37 / km

Gunstock Trails. Checking out trail conditions - some sections have been mowed, others still overgrown. Fresh Segway prints = tourist season still underway.

Hips were hurting after about 40 minutes - hard packed trails, stride is off, too much weight, or they're just getting shot...

Need to keep running regularly.

Run 41:01 [3] 4.93 km (8:19 / km) +151m 7:13 / km
shoes: Salomon Gray Speedcross

Trail run in the rain at RV Farms. Been a slug for far too long - interspersed with weekend races, at which I've done about what could be expected - moderately lousy.

Good to get out, just need to keep at it.

And need to get a replacement HRM - moisture got into the battery compartment and corroded stuff all up. Just got a new GPS watch after running over my old one - Amazon said a HRM was included, but not in the package - checking back with the seller.
