Back and forth on the lanes with the kids group - HS race going on across the street.
It was all either icy, or icy and rocky.

Beautiful day up at Waterville - good cover and although there were quite a few people, the trail system is big enough that it wasn't crowded.
They' got an inch or two of fresh powder last night and temps were variable.
Skis were really dragging in places, and had no get up and go legs and lungs felt like lead. Went up to the N end via Swan's Way, then headed up Osceola, thinking I'd do the John Deer and Moose Run loops - but was feeling lousy, so turned back and headed towards the Livermore Road - felt better going donnwhill, but not particularly fast.
Struggled my way up the Livermore Road, having to stop and rest too often. Brief chat with a CSU guy - saw my vest - Ski-Orienteering? You must know Larry" Back along Lower Snows Mtn Trail - downhill were fun, uphills sucked.
Short break then a short jaunt around the pond loop to get 15 km in - then called it a day.

XC Ski - Classic 2:40:52 [3] 12.51 km (12:51 / km) +259m 11:39 / km
shoes: Trak Waxless skiis

Setting out the off-the-main-trails controls and checking the snowshoe trails.
Antique waxless skis - think I got this pair back in the mid 80s, but they are great for crap conditions - rocks, mud, open streams - not a problem.

Although I'd hit the snow shoe trail the day before, it was really hard to see any tracks on the ground. Since there was so little snow, goal was to make the trails visible and match the map.
7 PM

XC Ski - Classic 1:08:47 [3] 7.23 km (9:31 / km) +95m 8:56 / km
shoes: Trak Waxless skiis

Since the snow was so thin, they weren't regrooming most of the trails, so set out to get all the further out controls placed - less to do in the morning.

Run 46:46 [3] 2.01 km (23:20 / km) +89m 19:06 / km
shoes: Axis 930 Snowshoes

And on snowshoes for the smaller trails higher up on the N side of Cobble.

"Packing" the S side snow shoe trails - a good workout. Hoping the snow we got sticks around.

Awesome, hard, fast conditions on the trails resurrected with man-made snow. Besides the GNA crew, just a few other folks out.

Base of the Carriage Road, up to Piper, over to Belknap, then Gunstock.
Started heading down the Gunstock Mtn Trail, but it was really icy - looped back to the Belknap-Gunstock saddle, down the Blue trail and the Carriage Road.
Glad I had some extra layers - was fine heading up, but got chilly up top and with less work heading down, glad for some additional warmth.

Arctic Claws were great - brought along my micro-spikes just in case, but they stayed on my pack. Heading down the stairway from heaven on the Blue trail there was a lot of small to moderate sized branches down across the trail. As I was moving some, stepped right into one of the very few spots where the water was still (barely) liquid, just a hair deeper than my shoe - kept moving after that...

Inaugural run for my new Inov-8 Arctic Claws. Temps into the 40s and 50s the last 2 days, so skiing has gone to crap. Feeling antsy, so knew I needed to get out and do something.
Wet and foggy, mix of ice, corn snow, mush and water underfoot. Headlamp was reflecting back off the fog - really neat!
Feet stayed absolutely dry, was expecting them to end up at least damp, if not drenched. Comfortable fit - plenty of room for thicker socks. Nice aggressive studs - did the trick on the icy hill sections.
Back and forth on some of the interior to the loop mtn bike trails - found a new one - hard to follow as the snow pack has condensed so tracks are less obvious and the fog was making it harder to see the next piece of flagging.

ahr:108 max:151 shoes: Atomic Red Cheetahs

Kids ski lessons - some time with the faster group out on the trails having fun and then coaching some parents "how do you go up the hill so fast like that? You're not even breathing hard..."

Enjoyable late afternoon session - not too cold, hardly any wind, hard packed snow with great cover on the trails.

XC Ski - Classic 1:14:32 [2] 9.19 km (8:07 / km) +179m 7:24 / km
shoes: '07 Fischer Classic White-Yell

Classic skiing on a clear and crisp day - 1" of fresh powder on top of the hard base, which mellowed things out a bit. Classic tracks were hard with ice mixed in - a bit of klister under the hard wax would have helped.

Some of this is on the Ski-o tracks - what I'd snow-shoed in was very uneven, but navigable. Snow pack is fairly firm, so wasn't wallowing in deep stuff off track.

XC Ski - Skate 21:08 [3] 4.52 km (4:41 / km) +69m 4:21 / km
shoes: Atomic Red Cheetahs

And a bit of skating to round out the day - another loop on the race course - hills were getting to me - dehydrated and in need of a Gu or 2.

ahr:145 max:157 shoes: Salomon SLab Classic-206

Skiing after standing around the finish line at the Zak Cup race - not really warmed up, but did 1 loop of the race course to see how I'd compare. Let's just say I wouldn't have been challenging the leaders.
Skis rather slow - waxed for warmer conditions.
Very good turnout for the race - had a lot of fun dancing around with the rest of the start/finish crew to keep warm.

XC Ski - Skate 20:00 [1] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: '02 Peltonen Skate Skis

Putzing around in the freezing rain during the kids ski session.
About a dozen kids and 5 coaches was a good ratio, so I wasn't needed for crowd control.
Wet frozen granular over nicely groomed made for nice and fast conditions, but very limited and fading light plus rain freezing on my glasses made for some challenges.

Started off on the Cobble Mtn side for a quick warmup, then headed back across the road - a quick loop on Brook Run, where I did a face plant just in front of a family as my left ski hit a rock in the snow and came to an immediate halt.
Then over to Mt Rowe for some vertical fun. More boot traffic and less firm conditions. Skis not overly fast, so was struggling up hills - more herringboning and less V1 than I wanted. Worked my way up to the dead end overlook, then came screaming back down. Started down the northern leg of Rowe's Revenge, but turned back near the bottom when I saw a section fulling in the sun and completely bare. Very cautious coming down some of the hills - steep, narrow, alternating powder and glaze. Saw one guy working his way gracefully down a narrow section - tried to emulate it, but opted for a graceless snowplow and side stepping the steepest parts.

Some ski-O trail packing at Gunstock.
Forgot how time consuming and exhausting this can be, even though it's low intensity.
