Gunstock - S of Cobble Mtn - Knoll and Rock Loops area
Beautiful day out - temps in the 50s - which resulted in it being wet underfoot.
A lot of bare ground, still some pretty deep snow in the shady spots.

Drizzling - snow was soft, no hard ice, a few bare spots. Hills were tough, not really solid underfoot to push against, so more of swing the leg forward and up. Feeling my lower back.

First road run in a while - took a while to feel warmed up. Using muscles that have been dormant for a while.

Morning ski before things warmed up too much.
Dusting of new snow over not yet transformed stuff from last weekend's dump. Hid some of the thin spots, but not all of them.

Time to think after last night's excitement - grandbaby #3 arrived in Denver late last night - 6 weeks early. Quick C-section due to preeclampsia - mom and little guy doing fine. Liam James weighed in at 3 lbs, 6 oz. Was on a respirator for a bit, but off it as of this morning.

Got over there at 10:00 - would have been even more awesome earlier. Some sections still crisp and fast, other sections warmed up and wet/sluggish. Not crowded, but more folks out on the trails than I was expecting to see.

Did a couple of the ski-o trails I'd banged in earlier this week - soft and slow - really needed to have been hit again in the interim.

After work fun session at Gunstock.
Trails in overall very good shape - varied from crisp and fast to wet and sticky depending on sun impact and what had started to cool down already.
A couple other guys out there having fun as well.

Snowshoeing at Gunstock - looking at track options for potential Ski-O net weekend.
GNA has a chest harness with attached tire behind - dragging that behind me to see how well it smoothed things out - worked very well, but exhausting work. Also grabbed a small sled - put the tire on that for traversing set trails and some of the uphills - much less drag.
Back and forth on if I want to hold something next weekend or not - traveling most of this week, and only got to about 1/4 of the tracks I'd like to have available.
Still amped up from the Craftsbury event - snow cover should still be good, but there is both the mental and physical stress that I always seem to forget about until the final prep time is half gone...

ahr:131 max:148 shoes: '18 Salomon Equipe RS-192

Inaugural spin out on my new Salomon Equipe RS skis - slightly longer and stiffer than my older Equipe 8s.
Great conditions - full snow cover - some branches and pine cones down. Stiff breeze was not an issue out in the woods, but very noticeable coming up the Cobble powerlines.
Quite a few folks out - all ages.

ahr:116 max:132 shoes: Peltonen BlueFat BackCountry S

Clunking around in the new deep stuff. Varied between following snowshoe tracks and breaking my own trail - skis kept getting clogged up - knocking them against a tree got some off, but not all of it. Took them off and scraped the now off on tree bark - things sped up considerably then for a bit.

Yeah daylight savings time!! Didn't get away from the house until after 5:30, but still had daylight to ski for over an hour - could have kept going.
Thin and open spots have grown since yesterday, but much of the trails are still fully covered. Felt more energetic than yesterday - took it easy most of the time, with some hills at higher effort and focusing on breathing.

Another 12-15" on the way over the next couple of days - still plenty of good skiing to go.

This was planned to be a chill ski day - see how my warm skis were running, go out and putz around a bit.
Met up with Jeff Pallieko as I was getting stuff on - he was partway through a distance day - "let's cruise together for a bit". Took me a bit to get warmed up, out of breath on the uphills, catching up on the downhills with better wax. Around Cobble, Rocl Loop, then out Birch and up by the stream along Oak - bridge was broken on one side, but still crossable. Back along Maple, then up the Cobble S as the power lines were getting bare. No oomph on that uphill - cruised back to the top of Rock Loop - Jeff headed back in. I headed over to Short Oak, then back up Maple, Oak down by the stream, climbed back up to the logging cut and the turn around loop, then came back to come down Birch at high speed - smooth and fun.
Wasn't really planning to do 16.5 k, but feeling good at the end, but tired.
Back to work and more rest this week.

Sprint Relay with Ernst - I had legs 1 & 3, he had 2 & 4.

about 16:00 for the first leg - 2.95 km, then 16:10 for the third - 2.7 km.
Track starts 1:30 before start gun and includes me waiting as Ernst did the 2nd leg.

World Masters "Long" race - some long stretches on wide groomed trails, with a neat maze up at the north end on dashed trails.
Struggled on the uphills on the dashed trails - arms were overworking and my legs weren't cooperative in short marathon skate style assistance. Flats and downhills were fun - took a few cut-throughs courtesy of the WC racers this morning that really paid off.

Ski-O 52:01 intensity: (3:47 @0) + (12:30 @1) + (30:35 @2) + (5:09 @3) 7.84 km (6:38 / km) +116m 6:11 / km
ahr:129 max:148 shoes: Rossignol Combi Skis

Back to the Model event area to see how the new snow has changed things.
A bit slower, but oh so smooth... Not so much snow that herringboning up hills will be a pure slog-fest, but enough that all the bare spots are covered, even under the hemlocks. Isuue for early starters tomorrow, like me, will be how much the WC courses overlap with the masters as far as cut-throughs. I really don't want to be the first one to blaze a new trail through untracked forest, only to find myself mired in a hemlock blow-down maze.
Looks like my GPS cut out for a section, so distance and time noted don't match GPS track.

World Masters Middle Course - Day 2.
Longer than day 1, with what felt like more time on narrow trails, that were sketchier than on Tuesday.
Ernst got more by almost 5 minutes, rather than just under 3 - but still good enough for #2 Worlds and US.
Noting that Aims is a UNO ( as well as NEOC) member, we did an UNO podium sweep at the World Masters level - not bad...

Ski-O race 30:38 [3]

Didn't get my garmin going, so no track logged - will need to draw in my route from memory when we get the maps back later this week.
Good effort, some minor navigation bobbles. Narrow trails were mostly OK, with no major tie-ups or snagged ski tips. Was careful at the major intersections - stopped myself just before heading down a big (wrong) hill - 2 seconds well spent.

Ski-O model event - across the road from the center of the Craftsbury setup.
Warm and mostly soft - with a pretty hard base underneath in most parts.

Waterville Valley - Parked at the lot by Livermore Rd - then up Livermore Rd to Upper M Snow Trail to the summit. First couple of km was wet and slow, although my skis were running fairly well, a bit dryer higher up, but generally soft.
Coming down was a bit hairier at the top - it was such a grind going up, I didn't realize how much speed I'd pick up. Things were considerably slower again at the bottom, snow was pretty soggy.

XC Ski - Skate 1:33:34 intensity: (3:03 @0) + (14:25 @1) + (51:31 @2) + (24:35 @3) 15.76 km (5:56 / km) +322m 5:23 / km

Quick lunch and change of skis to see how they run in this stuff.
Headed out the other way - Lower Osceola, up John Deer to Upper Osceola - coming back down Upper Osceola was another thrill - had stopped for a bit up top to rest and watch a chipmunk popping his head up from a hole repeatedly - but kept my legs moving enough that they didn't stiffen up.
Then over to Moose Run and Wicked Easy - hit each trail twice - once in each direction. Lapped some slightly older folks a couple times, stopped and chatted with them a bit.
Back down, then headed up Tripoli Rd a couple of km until my legs said enough. Gal with a US Team head band came swooping down just before I turned around. Things were cooler, crisper and faster the higher I got, which made for another exciting descent - tucked into the set tracks for part of it.
US Team Gal was coming back up as I got to the warmer and slower section - she had plenty of energy.
Quick out and back a short ways on Swans Way then the Pipeline Trail - legs were getting less and less happy, so headed back and called it a day.
2 1/2 hours skiing today - most I've done in quite a while.
