Looped around the lower marsh and headed N. Filled in another section that was a nice mix. Some open forest, part of it logged/thinned, with only a few sections where they left slash on the ground. Cross a stone wall and it's a section that was logged quite a few years earlier, with hardwood saplings in some sections and close small pines in others, with knee high crap in other parts.

Run/hike up Mt Rowe from Gilford Elementary. Saw 5 humans and 5 dogs. Knew 3 of the people and associated dogs. Mix of slushy snow and mud of various depths. Glad I had the Arctic Claws on - rocks were slick.
Over the to towers on Rowe, then reversed over to where the trail hits the ski trails by the top of the Tiger lift. From there headed down the purple Benjamin Weeks Trail to where it hits the blue Mt Rowe Trail. No one had been on that section - snow depth was about ankle depth. A few wet spots that kept my feet nice and cool. Got back just before sundown.
Might have been the last outing for the Arctic Claws. As I has heading down the last km, felt like snow was building up under my toes. Realized it was between the sole and my foot, not on the bottom of the sole. De-laminated back to the ball of the foot. Might be able to glue it back - these are my favorite studded shoes for winter trail runs - wide toe box, good grip. Have stripped out the about 1/4 of the studs, mostly right under the ball of both feet, but still have the studs around the sides of the forefoot.

Carye Forest
Mapping - great visibility. Started on a rocky hillside, much of which was also semi-marshy. I think this part is overgrown with ferns much of the summer, so less than ideal for having legs go through here, although spring or late fall should be OK. A smattering of mappable boulders - would mostly be bingo controls, but some areas have enough definition to have realistic control locations.
Crossed a stream and it turned into wonderful wide-open terrain - mostly open at ground level, sporadic features both point and linear. Then it got a bit thicker, but still better footing than in the rock hillside.

Brief excursion into the mist and mud, with patches of ice and some remnants of crusty snow here and there.
Good for my soul, even though my body was griping the whole time. Sorry body, we're going to keep on doing what's good for all of us.

Website indicated they still has a few trails open and were grooming them - maybe get in one more session this year.
Well, the groomer had been over them, some sections were still nice, interspersed with mud/gravel and solid ice. Was able to get past the sketchy sections without taking off my skis. The Stadium - lower Broadhead loop was mostly good, so did that a couple times. There we a couple of tourers out and a couple of guys going fast, so thought I'd cut short and do something else.

Lot was just over half full. Had the chair to myself each trip up the mountain. Spring conditions - some icy and scritchy, some piles of corn snow. Still had a good time.

Almost all the vertical is on the chair lift - there are a couple of trails where there is a short uphill pitch that you can glide right up and over.

Mentally struggled through this, but got it done. Not much oomph.
Glad I had on studded shoes - some bare ground, some packed snow, some mud and some ice.

Yay for daylight savings time!!

Haven't been to Chemung for a while, so decided to run the trails there. Was surprised by how much snow was still in the woods, but there's not a lot of south-facing open slopes. A few truly icy spots, as opposed to hard packed snow. Even with the temps into the 60s snow wasn't really soft along the boot-packed monorail.
Adequate grip on the ice - combinationof warm temps softening it up and the wonders of Inov-8's miraculous graphene sole material (maybe).

Assessment and mapping at Hollis Town Forest. Nice trail network, found some mtn bike trails that didn't get picked up in OSM. These were fairly straight (forward), not a lot of let's twist back and forth to get as much distance as we can in the smallest possible area. Will help for the lower level courses, but make setting the higher courses a tad more difficult to avoid trail runs, etc.
Some nice open areas, some knee high blueberry areas, some thicker and really ticker spots.
Felt similar to Townsend and Beaver Brook for vegetation and topography. (Well duh, Jim - it's not too far from either of those maps.)

Gunstock just at dusk. As I was putting on my boots, a guy was heading back to his car - "it's starting to firm up out there, be careful on the corners. I almost lost it a couple times."
He was right - more open areas that had been exposed to the sun were really crisp, tough to get an edge. Reversed Cobble. A few good sized open areas - took my skis off at the bottom where the groomers come onto the trail from the equipment yard. Some rocks and frozen mud patches heading up the S-curves, but it was pretty good at the top. Out Birch to the wall, which had a lot of grit in the center, turned around there and back to Cobble. Did a back and forth on the section above the holding pond, then carefully down the hill towards the race trails.
HR is a bit suspect - don't think I was working that hard at any point, but I am not in the best shape right now.

Semi-focused meanderings around Lockes Hill - aka mapping.

Tablet was low on power when I started, so, was intermittent as I had to let it charge up from the power pack now and then.
