Hiking 1:00:00 [1] ** 3.2 km (18:45 / km)

FIshing with Tim on Paugus Brook on the south side of the Sandwich Range. Parked at the WMNF lot at the trailhead of the Linberty Trail to Chocorua, hiked up the Bolles Trail to the Bockford trail cutover, then jumped on the brook and fished down.
Weather was unsettled all day. Had planned to go earlier, but it looked like the heavens would open at any time. Finally said the heck with it and went mid-afternoon. Got a few sprinkles, but was wading in the river, so it didn't make much of a difference. Not a lot of action - kept 4, 2 of which were pretty small ~6" with the other 2 7 - 7.5" Tim kept one.

Orienteering 50:00 [2] *** 3.5 km (14:17 / km)
ahr:119 max:151 shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail

Setting out the rest of the controls. Mosquitoes still active.
Had more rain overnight, but it's now clear and low humidity.
Normal last minute scrambling, but done in plenty of time.

Note

Ahern event:
Went very well. Not a lot of folks, 20 individuals ran one or more courses.
First to arrive were Cindy Gray, who I haven't seen for a few years, then Clint Morse and his son Jackson who'd been hiking up in the White Mtns and were on their way home to CT.

Things picked up pretty fast after that, fortunately Jon (#4 son) offered to come down and give me a hand with registration and start/finish. Quite a few other folks hanging out at the beach - day stayed dry, although a few clouds rolled in and it started to look a bit threatening early afternoon, but that quickly passed.

Hod some good conversations with some locals who'd seen the markers and wondered what was going on. Almost talked a couple folks into going out and giving it a try, but in the end no luck.

Some good intense competition on the 2 sprints. Winning times about where I wanted. In past years, I've set controls on smaller features and in more complex areas. This time opted for the more prominent features and the ever expanding mtn bike trail network helped keep the speeds up.
Lots of good feedback on the courses, and the location. Now I remember why I keep doing these - felt very good to be able to offer an event that folks so obviously enjoyed.

Andersen family was there and did the Yellow course as a group, then Peter did both sprints. Adrian Owens did both sprints, with Kestrel running the White in a very impressive time, with Mom Allison trying valiantly to keep up with a nagging leg injury. Kestrel then somked the Yellow course.

Many of the regular UNO suspects also - Pete, Lex & Cody, Ernst and Nancy Linder, Bob Lux, Darrell Scott, and Charlotte Gray with Melissa and David in tow.

Weather stayed nice all the way thorugh to the end - although we did get a gully washer of a thunderstorm that came through just after 5.

Orienteering 20:00 [2] *** 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
ahr:121 max:151 shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail

Final control pickup. Bob Lux got a few, Ernst got a lot and Jon ran down and picked up the sourthern Bike-O controls that no one ran/biked.

Everything was picked up and in by 3:30.

Orienteering 45:00 [2] *** 5.0 km (9:00 / km)
ahr:120 max:143 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08

Setting out controls just before dark - in the middle of prime mosquito time.

Just finished up the maps and ran out to Staples to get copies run off - normally print them all off on my Epson C88, but I've got horizontal lines showing up, and running the clean utility doesn't correct it. Printed good quality masters on the Epson 1280, which unfortunately is't waterproof ink, but is photocopied nicely.

Wet and dreary, hoping for better weather in the morning

Run (trails) 41:00 [2] *** 4.23 km (9:42 / km)
ahr:133 max:155 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws

Checking some more control locations for Saturday.

Hot (well, low 80s which after week sit seems of low to mid 60s seems really hot) and humid.

Running a lot of the small windy bike trails, still very wet.

Not a lot of energy. Will be glad when Saturday is over - wondering why I keep saying I'll do these, then procrastinate until the last minute, not have any help lined up, and wonder why I stress...

Run (pavement) 40:30 [3] 6.8 km (5:57 / km)
ahr:149 max:162 shoes: New Balance 882

Evening run on another section of the RI bike path. From the Cranston, Oaklawn "trail head". Quite a bit of activity - generally houses/business establishments on both sides.
Not a lick of climb, despite what the Garmin is saying. On the bed of an abandoned railroad line, nicely paved with a center line and rules about which side you run on and bike on. Run on left, bike on right, so each will see the other coming.
Felt plodding on the way out, better on the way back, but overall a boring experience - I'm not used to maintaining a steady pace with little opportunity for variation due to the terrain.
