Orienteering race 51:18 [4] 4.87 km (10:32 / km) +128m 9:18 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212 - Blue/Oran

NAOC Middle distance at Storrs Pond - little up, little down, some good, some great, some...wtf...
Note to self - Jim, when you plan out and are executing a route, it is not wise to magically jump yourself over to another intersection that you wish you were at, but aren't - this leads to confusion, aimless wandering and loss of considerable amounts of time.

Play-by-play:
1 - appreciated the trail run to the common first control. Someone's been listening to J-J.
2 - Bearing from the trail bend, footing a bit lumpy. Hesitant reading the clearings and logging rides. Off to the left a bit and long, quick loop back to it.
3 - One of my better legs. Rough bearing, rocky knoll, marshes aand in.
4 - Off to the left out to the trail, down the reentrant, across trail.
5 - Dropped way too far, crossed stream, up to the trail, then saw Dean Sturtevant charging up the hill on the trail. Quick correction.
6 - straight
7 - Seemed like there were a coulpe of almost knolls on the way, a bit ahead of Dean.
8 - Off to the left a bit, Dean went straight in.
9 - Mad dash down hill, good bearing, terrain all made sense.
10 - Dropped to trail, up from bend.
11 - Braincramp - I wanted to go NW out of the control to the trail, but maybe was closer to due N and hit the big trail just before the junction. saw the trail across and dashed off down it, thinking I was on the smaller western trail, instead of the larger one. Floundering around for a bit, until I saw a control, did a quick check and saw I was way over at my #5. Disheartened recovery, but got back on the right trail and made it to 12. Maybe quicker to cut in earlier, overshot a bit, then angled back up over the small ridge to it. 4:30 - 5:00?
12 - Nailed it.
13 - up the small trail into the green slash. Other than the twisting trail and lots of roots, not too bad. cut the corner, then thought I'd gone too high and hit the indistinct trail, rather than a thoughtful approach, dash back down the trail I should have continued on, and dropped further down onto a trail that petered out in some pine blowdown. Hill angle was wrong, saw a rootstock that didn't belong and figured out I was too low after a quick back and forth on a lower knoll. 2:15?
14 - Trudge up the hill
15 - Across the trail, should have stayed on it for ~25 m. Saw lower knoll well R of the line visited it, then recovered. 1:00?
16 - Drop to trail, right at frisbee golf goal, then into the green, almost dropped too low, then looked at map and saw rockface was on side, not downhill part of spur.
17 - Open area, drop to trail, saw it on right.
18 - Just had to check out another control along the way...

Orienteering race 1:12:58 [3] 6.11 km (11:57 / km) +244m 9:57 / km
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280

Earlier start, a bit cooler, but very high humidity. No oomph again.
Was able to jog/slow run quite a bit of the first half, but faded over the last half of the course.
Wish there'd been water earlier on the course.

Orienteering race 1:11:02 [3] 6.1 km (11:39 / km) +209m 9:56 / km
shoes: Salomon Gray Speedcross

Fun course, but an uninspired "run".
Late start, warm and humid. Should have carried water bottle belt.
