Could have skied, but conditions better suited for biking - tires don't care about bare spots. They (and I) do care about icy spots, but managed to stay up across all of those. Helped that the groomer had chipped up any glare surfaces.

Downhill Ski 1:00:00 [1] 30.24 km (30.2 kph) +2794m

First time downhill skiing in about 20 years.
All of the positive elevation and about half of the time was courtesy of the lift. (total time was 2:04 - cut that in half for the time sitting on my butt being carried uphill).
Feeling it in my quads.

Hadn't been to Ahern for a while - was able to find my way around a number of different trails without getting bewildered.
Hard freeze with a lot of moisture in the ground has resulted in a lot of ice flowers blooming - patches of long ice crystals (3-6") that sprout out of the ground, generally with a thin crust of what ever was laying on the ground on top.
In many cases they looked like a stone by headlamp, so when I stepped on one and my foot kept going down beyond what my eyes said was a solid surface was a bit disconcerting. But they did generally make a satisfying crunching sound so it was a positive thing overall.

Chilly session on the fat bike by headlamp.
Attached one lamp to the handlebars and tried to figure out how to get one to stay on my bike helmet. After 5 minutes or so of futzing with it to no avail, opted for just a hat and headlamp. Figured I wouldn't be going any faster on the bike than I do on skis, and with the brakes, probably have more control on rapid descents with less probability of a crash.
Saw 2 other fat bikers heading off along the lanes. Andy was out spreading snow around on the shorter loops from the stadium, so started off on the lanes and Brook Run. Nicely hard packed, with a mix of older smoother surface, some recent groomed and some more chopped up by the cat tracks. The chopped up was the slowest - most rolling friction.
Hands were cold for a while, legs were staying warm. Top was cool, particularly on the downhills.
Cobble loop, out Birch and back on Maple -S curve was much less hairy than on skis. No need to be concerned about bare spots - tires rolled over everything, versus skis that grab on gravel.
Lots of fun.
