Orienteering race 57:05 [5] 6.1 km (9:21 / km)

a couple mistakes:

0-1 I was lining myself up with the buildings and pavement to know where to turn out of the Bastyr campus. the trail I was looking for was supposed to be even with the west edge of the little concrete inlet. I got there and saw what looked like a trail, but after going down the hill I realized it wasn't actually a trail and had to turn around. The real trail was another 30m west, so either I lined myself up wrong or the map was a little off. lost like 90 seconds checking the fake trail.

4-5 I was going pretty fast down the main trail looking for the turn-off. There were a bunch of little dirt paths to the left and right that weren't on the map so I was already a little confused. When I got to where I though the turnoff was, a control was there with another group punching. The control was on the main trail and my control was supposed to be on a side trail, so I didn't bother checking the number (you can tell where this is going). I went off on the side trail, got to a steep downhill and turned around because the control was on a relatively level area. I figured I had gone on another fake trail and kept going down the main trail. I kept running and got to another trail that was clearly further down on the map, so I knew I had to turn around. I got back to the rogue control and checked the number and it was the right control! What?!? I'm not totally sure what was going on but the other people I talked to thought either the map was wrong or the control was in the wrong spot. I wanted to go back and check afterwards but it was cold and the rest of the Lakeside people wanted to get lunch. Lost 4 minutes wandering around the side trail and having to backtrack up the main trail.

6-7 I wasn't looking at my map very closely and went down to the water thinking 11 was the next control. I think my confused brain thought the 11 kind of looked like a 7 and didn't see the line going from 6 too 7 since it made such a small angle with the line from 5-6. Lost maybe 30 seconds.

Other than that everything was pretty ok. I'm not as out of shape as I thought, my splits are pretty close to Mathew Rogers' on controls where neither of us messed up. I'm way behind Devon but that's to be expected.

Orienteering 1:56:45 [3] 10.9 mi (10:43 / mi)

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5756833 should've gotten them all,,, basically we wasted a bunch of time crossing aurora and got turned around afterwards, if I'd realized how close we were to the control I would've just went for it. But we thought we were a lot further when we were so we just decided to head back.

Orienteering 40:41 [3] 4.5 km (9:02 / km)

okay run. I lost 2 minutes on the first control because I forgot it was 1:10,000 so I turned off the main trail too soon. On number three I took the south set of trails, most people I talked to took the north set. Instead of taking the left fork and running by 4 there was a more direct trail if i took the right fork (i didn't even realize the trail was on the map, for some reason the smaller trails on the bridle trails map are just really hard to read for me). The rest of the run was clean but I lost a little time from slower running. Even if I hadn't made that mistake on 1 I probably still would've gotten third, might've passed Tim by a couple seconds. I didn't really have high expectations for this race since it's such a runner's course and I'm slow coming off the half marathon, so I'm not too upset or anything. UW is up next, another runner's course but hopefully I'll be in better shape for it.
