Running Smooth 15:00 [2]

Various warm-ups.

Orienteering Forest (race) 31:10 [4] 4.2 km (7:25 / km)

Middle distance on the new map in Bow Valley. Heavenly terrain for middle distance with very detailed ridge and depression terrain. Had a great race in terms of being in control and running with a plan. Only lost 30 seconds at control 3, a tiny root stock, but otherwise nailed all controls. However, I think I was a bit too conservative at times, making a few map stops that probably were not needed.

Orienteering Forest (race) 41:00 [4] 5.8 km (7:04 / km)

Mass start THOMASS. Ran off with the pack without taking 15 seconds to actually look at the best route in the box, subsequently taking the controls in an idiotic order. Add to that running off the map on an unmarked trail together with a pack of 4 other runners and it's clear to say that the box was a bit of a disaster. However, no one else seemed to do much better... Had a pretty good fight with Will C on the last half of the course, but he eventually pulled ahead on faster legs.

Running Smooth 30:00 [2]

Various warm-ups.

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:10:30 [4] 7.6 km (9:17 / km)

Long at Mount Laurie. Course started with 3 control in the famous boulder field in the north end of the map. This section is rather green and the rock is sloppily mapped. Ran very slowly and careful on the compass and got through without control mistakes. Lost 3 minutes to 4 as the attack of the control in the ditch failed. I misread the other ditch I was using as the attackpoint and it took a moment to figure out what had happened. Also lost 1 minute at 6, going too much left in a flat and vague area. Other than that a pretty clean race, but a bit slow.

Orienteering Forest (race) 46:34 [4] 5.1 km (9:08 / km)

Night-O mass start race. Started with 5 common control and the pack badly missed the second control, which separated the pack and spread out the runners. Control 5 was kind of hidden in a crack between rocks and when I punched it together with Louise I had a feeling that we were among the first to find it. I had some trouble in the following loops as I was running alone. Got stuck in the green and got lazy with the compass. Nothing major, but when I went out on the final section of common control I felt like I must be behind. Coming into 14 I saw Louise again and at 16 I also saw Will C. The three of us really did not orienteer well and got split up. Louise got ahead again and it was not until the last few controls that the mini-pack reformed. Will C found the second last control first and ran in as the winner.

Overall, lots of bad, sloppy and frantic orienteering. But what a blast!

Running Smooth 15:00 [2]

Warm-up/cool-down.

Orienteering City/Park (race) 14:36 [4] 2.8 km (5:13 / km)

Sprint at University of Calgary. Typical flat campus "terrain" with large buildings and park. This kind of map typically offer very little navigational challenge even with great course planning, where the only choice is left or right around a building. This course was not great and offered only 2 legs with any sort of route choice and the rest was strictly a running race. Even so, I enjoyed being on a new map and to stretch the legs after the long drive. Didn't make any mistakes, but lost 10 seconds having to stop to redo the shoe laces...

Running Smooth 10:00 [2]

Warm-up.

Orienteering City/Park (wet) 44:00 [3] 6.2 km (7:06 / km)

First WET I have done in a long time. Vanier Park. Rookie course planner making for a few very odd controls... Ran hard the first 2/3, but only jogged the end.
