Orienteering race 57:01 [4] *** 6.47 km (8:49 / km) +120m 8:04 / km
spiked:15/17c shoes: Salomon Wings

US Champs Day 2: Remarkable Flats map :

Very open area with lots of rock features and open grasslands between. Took off fast and confident .... reading terrain well ... #2 overshot by about 100m on left .leaving#3 got sucked downhill and off course (2 mins error) (but got a sight of #6 and #5 control locations from the "wrong side" which set me up for very fast legs for #5 and #6) . High speed running and nailed 7 , 8,9 , 10 ,slight miss on 11 (flag on similar hill 80 m away), Tricky finish 14 - 17 with large number (~10) of controls in small area in full view of spectators and very large boulders hiding view of controls. 9th in M50+ class for the day and 6th for the M50+ US championships

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1] *** 5.0 km (18:00 / km) +150m 15:39 / km
spiked:5/5c shoes: Salomon Wings

Walk around on "Plains of Despair" map after US Champs Day 2 dodging thunderstorms (stayed off the ridges !). Found 5 of the training tapes then ran back to car when starting raining real hard.

Drove to Nebraska through numerous thunderstorms with nasty lightning zapping to either side of I-80

Orienteering race 53:04 [4] 5.89 km (9:01 / km) +165m 7:54 / km

US champs Day 1 : Green X at Diamond Bay . Assigned a very late start. (only 2 folks after me) . Blew by #2 (a pit) (30 seconds error ) ; #4 and 5 were boulders in an area of the map that looked like someone had emptied the entire contents of a pepper shaker on it ..100's of boulders..... very technical ...about 2 mins lost on each); clean and fast run #7 onwards in much less technical terrain... redlined it from 11 to 15 .. no problem with the altitude. 11th out of 65 on the course , in 5th place for M50+

Mtn Biking 1:30:00 [2] 11.0 mi (8:11 / mi) +200m 7:45 / mi

spiked:10/10c shoes: Salomon Wings

East Pelican Bay Sprint: Fast run ; a couple of 10 second errors (#4 ) and #10, Made easier by running on some of the terrain earlier. 5th place.

spiked:8/8c shoes: Salomon Wings

spiked:16/17c shoes: Salomon Wings

Laramie Daze: Happy Jack Map.

Drove from Estes Park to Medicine Bow Forest for Day 4 of Laramie Daze.
Green Course : 1:15,000 map ... took a while to get used to the terrain and map . A fair amount of low undergrowth plus new aspen made running slower . 3 minute mistake on #4, 2 min mistake on #5 , 2 min on #7 ... then got the feel of the terrain with clean and fast run thereafter. No problem with the altitude (7700')

Orienteering (control picking) 1:30:00 [3] *** 5.0 km (18:00 / km) +150m 15:39 / km
spiked:10/10c shoes: Salomon Wings

Laramie Daze: Training "First with the Most" Map 1:10000. Pairs training ( start 1 min apart on each leg, read terrain to navigate w/o compass, compare notes at end of each leg) with Roger Tr. This exercise really got us much better at reading terrain and all those rocks/boulders/cliffs.
