I drove up to Pine Grove in PA for the Mid-Atlantic champs. It was a long drive for a short course, but I really love that area around Gettysburg and being at Pine Grove brought back good memories of the time I spent at the youth hostel there with my kids. Their Venture scouting group used that hostel as a central point for training hikes on the Appalachian trail. I've made a lot of pasta in the kitchen of that hostel.

It also made me a little sad to be there. It seems like a lifetime ago when we were there with the scouts. It's like my kids were different people who are now gone and now they are new versions of themselves. Which, I guess, is how it's supposed to be, but I miss those other people.

Anyway, my run went really well! I had a small error on #4...maybe distracted by seeing Sandy who I didn't even recognize! It wasn't until I was talking to her in the parking lot afterwards, when she said she saw me at #3 and #4, that I realized it was her.

Controls #5 and #6 could have been very tricky, basically features in the middle of nothing. But, I saw a control on a platform on the way to #5, so that helped. And to #6 my plan was to go up to the trail, pace count to the place I wanted to leave the trail, compass and pace count from the trail to the control, and then pray someone else was there to verify I was in the right spot. And it all worked out!! A guy was running down the hill in front of me as I thought I was nearing the control, so I watched to see if he looked like he was "coming from" a control or "going to" a control. I decided it was the former, looked up the hill and saw the rim of what was probably the depression. And it was! Yay!

I ran early so I could leave pretty early. The Quantico bus was later than I thought it would be, so I didn't get a chance to talk to many people.
