I stopped logging after Wednesday because things got too hectic and took all of my time. Thursday was the Middle model that I was managing, and that went well except that Timo Sild got a stick in his leg and needed stitches. I felt bad that he was going to miss the Games, but he seemed okay when I drove him back to UAB from Oak Mt.

The Sprint on Friday was a masterpiece. We worked late on Thursday night to set up the arena for maximum TV perfection, and it paid off. I missed the women's race though due to having to work on fixing a snafu with bibs. I did get to drive Tim Robertson back to UAB, though, after his anti-doping test.

Friday night broke me, though. We transitioned to Oak Mt. to set up for the Middle the next day, and it just seemed like a lot of work in the very hot sun. I got cranky and frustrated and came back to the dorm room in tears. Cristina and Mary were great friends and helped me through it. The next morning, I tested positive for covid, so I think that had something to do with my frustration.

I packed up quickly and got out of there to minimize any further exposure to anyone. (So far, Mary is negative, and I assume Cristina is, too.) I was super bummed to miss the next two races and helping out, but I knew I wanted to just get home. I didn't feel too bad on Saturday and made it to Lenexa, KS. Sunday, though, was a different story. By the time I hit the Colorao border, I wasn't sure I was going to make it. But I knew I didn't want to spend any amount of time in a hotel room, so I pushed on. I couldn't believe how much worse it got in just 24 hours.

Right now I'm waiting for a Telehealth appointment with my doctor in hopes of getting some kind of medicine to help.

I'm so happy I was able to help with this event, despite how it ended for me. I'd do it again, no question, if Cristina was in charge.

Things are getting a little hectic here as we get closer to the actual events. Corralling the equipment (tents, tables, chairs, etc.) has proven to be most trying. We were supposed to pick-up a cargo van with our equipment at 7:00a this morning. Well, we got the van but no equipment, By 11:00a this morning, I had been given 3 different stories about how/when we'd get our equipment. Finally, I got the call to be at our warehouse in 10 minutes to meet another truck with our equipment, and they would transfer to our truck. An hour and half later, after waiting in the blazing sun, the truck showed up.

I think we're set for the Middle Model. The venue manager at Oak Mt. knew nothing about setting up for the model, but Nicole (our sport event manager) was heading out to Oak Mt. to tell him about it and to help set it up, so I'm not sure what I'll find out there. Sandy was going to take a look this afternoon to see what it looks like.

Rick and Susie DeWitt picked up all of their equipment and controls for the sprint model and tech model tomorrow, so those should be fine. After that, we need to maneuver the box truck through the streets of Birmingham so we can set up for the Sprint. I will say again, if it was just orienteers in charge of everything, it would be much better.

It's been exciting, though, to see all of the big names in orienteering! Yannick Michiels, Tim Robertson, Charlotte Ward... And it's super exciting to see the athletes from all of the different sports and countries. And I'm sharing a dorm suite with Mary and Cristina! It doesn't get much better than that.

Travel Day: Broken Arrow, OK --> Memphis --> Birmingham

I picked up Cristina in Memphis, and we got into Birmingham around 4:00. The scene at Accreditation was quite chaotic, but we managed to get a few things done -- finding rooms for 2 athletes left off the list, changing our workroom to one that was a bit more secretive, testing the AV equipment in our meeting room, and getting the orienteering delegation into the dorms on the 12th vs. th 13th. Well, we think those are all done...we'll check back today.

Today is venue visitation day with the Swiss Timing folks to make sure whatever tents that are up are correct, and basically get the lay of the land. And put out any new fires. Most of the OUSA technical team is arriving today.

Also, I know this won't be the only time I mention this, but it is very hot and sticky here. By the time we got to our hotel last night, I was feeling the heat and was very happy to get into a cool room. Hopefully I'll get acclimated quickly.
