Orienteering race 2:00:25 [4] 13.29 km (9:04 / km) +640m 7:18 / km
shoes: Silva K100

Billygoat Run - second well behind Will Hawkins, on whom I relied completely for the long leg to 7 - he was running much faster than I could even keep track of on the map. I wondered whether he was merely pretending to be confused shortly before 9 in order to shake me but I knew where I was at that point and all the people who'd caught us at 7 were sure to be breathing down our necks anyway so I forged ahead and then made a parallel error one ridge to the north of the right one on 10 that let him get by. Slowed down a bit thereafter from the effects of previous exertion and the lack of a rabbit pulling me along. Saw Will just ahead (he said he messed up 11 somewhat) and Wyatt, Vadim and Boris only just behind me in the 12-13-14 triangle but no one thereafter.

Just barely remembered to grab two of the waterproof bandaids I'd bought the previous evening as I headed off to catch up with everyone walking to the start - nice not to have rubbed my nipples raw though not so much of a performance issue as in a multi-day event.

Note

Had ambitions to do some light running before heading off for my ride north but I didn't get home from seeing a violent, stylish Korean film that won the Grand Prix at Cannes until after midnight so sleep took priority.

Cycling 1:06:00 [3] 13.0 mi (5:05 / mi)

Thursday Apr 7, 2005 #

Running 1:32:00 [2] 10.0 mi (9:12 / mi)
shoes: NB856

Woke up, drank a liter of Gookinaid, ate a banana, waited 15 minutes, then ran to work by way of Rock Creek Park.

Running 1:50:00 [2] 12.0 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: NB856

What goes up must come down. He who runs to work at least has the option of wimping out and taking the Metro. Nevertheless, I ran home through Rock Creek Park in the rain, slightly less directly and with a climb out and then back dropping in on the most convenient bike shop nearby. Very nice that the time has changed as I therefore didn't have to use my light. Probably should have for the last 20 minutes in the park but didn't HAVE to. Good training for poor footing anyway.

Note

No cycling since my front tire is still flat. No running since I went to see Ballet Hispanico at the Kennedy Center in the evening. Actual rest might not be a bad thing.

Cycling 1:03:00 [3] 12.5 mi (5:02 / mi)

My slowly leaking as of morning front tire went irretrievably flat half a mile from home so I walked the rest of the way - a minor annoyance converted into a medium annoyance by my pump also deteriorating beyond usability when I replaced the tube the next morning. Zefal used to make pumps to last years but they sll seem to be disposable these days. I'll have to drop in somewhere Wednesday or Thursday and buy abother one.

Running 16:00 [2]

Warmup/cooldown and rest between repetitions. Shorter than usual as I did the repetitions starting from the endpoint closer to home in order to shorten the total workout, accepting an uphill finish in exchange for eight or nine more minutes of American Idol viewing.

Running 16:00 [5] 4.4 km (3:38 / km)

4x1100m I intervals. Haven't had a necessary battery transplant/resurrection performed on my dead watch yet so no splits and time based purely on how fast I usually run these.

Cycling 1:16:00 [3] 14.5 mi (5:14 / mi)

Form exercises 38:00 [3]

Warmup/cooldown, 8x100 meter strides, bum kicks, A's, B's and bounding - wouldn't have wanted to go long or run intervals but this seemed an appropriate way to stretch out my legs after the weekend.
