Orienteering race 1:13:08 [4]

West Point Day 2 Blue - a mediocre race with two attempts to navigate to the control after the next one that had to be aborted and an insufficiently careful attack on the third control from which I didn't recover well. Just barely remained in second place overall.

Orienteering race 1:07:52 [4] 7.48 km (9:04 / km) +430m 7:03 / km

West Point Day 1 Blue - a good race though I'm not so pleased with my route choices on 6 and 16. Also should have had a safer plan for 14 and should have stayed in closer map contact on the way to 15. Still, not losing any significant time to mistakes is a good race at West Point.

Orienteering race 13:04 [5] 2.2 km (5:56 / km) +60m 5:14 / km

West Point Sprint - a good sprint with some minor hesitations navigating around and under the barracks where the controls were packed tightly together - this was a challenge to read on the run. Tied for second with John F., both of us being handed another outrunning by Erin Schirm. Got a scrape on my back from the uphill edge of one building I chose to run under.

Note

So irrelevant to orienteering but... it took me until the second ad I saw for "Next" to realise that it was probably based on Philip K. Dick's "The Golden Man". Now I see that they're acknowledging the debt, though I wonder whether they could have got away with not doing so given that it seems the only element of the story they're using is the central idea of someone having an ability to see only a short distance into the future and select among the possible alternatives resulting from different actions on his part.

OTOH, that would be a darned useful ability for an orienteer - pick the future in which find the control with the right code soonest, avoid the futures in which you step in gopher holes and twist your ankle.

In-line Skating 35:00 [3]

Not wanting to overdo the LSD in the runup to another weekend of orienteering, skated to work. Leg muscles appreciated the low intensity run home yesterday after Tuesday's exertion - now feel recovered.

Cycling 40:00 [3]

Cycling home by way of PCRM volunteer night.

Cycling 31:00 [3]

Cycling to work.

Running 2:01:33 [2] 12.0 mi (10:08 / mi)

Roundabout way home through Rock Creek Park - very different now that it's both green and still light until eight.

Running 7:59 [1]

Warmup/cooldown.

Form exercises 31:34 [4]

Silly walks, 9x100m strides and three passes of bounding up a gentle slope.

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Cycling to work in shorts and sleeveless jersey for the first time this year. Not that it was hot enough for sleeveless to be necessary but neither was is cool enough to preclude it. Home again, easily in anticipation of intervals.

Running 15:00 [1]

Warmup/cooldown/~ 2 minute rests between repetitions.

Running 17:48 [5] 4.8 km (3:42 / km)

4x1200m I intervals in 4:28, 4:26, 4:27 and 4:27. Having done the strides in the morning definitely took something out of my legs and slowed these down but I'm pretty sure the intensity was still high enough for the desired training effect. Still might be best to make the effort to do such efforts back to back only on either side of a night's sleep. Will see how legs feel in the morning.

Strength 3:00 [2]
