Oceania relays - Glenlean

6.2km 19 controls; Okm 5.1
I ran with Alex in a men's mixed team on the second leg. Unfortunately our third leg runner did not show up so DQ/DNF
Pretty easy course, but physical again, hills, hills, hills. I did stupit 4 min mistake on first one and a bit of a wobble on 6 but other than that it was OK.
Felt really tired. I should have skipped that event and save energy for the next ones - not much of a value.

Warm up/down race 13:00 [2] 2.5 km (5:12 / km)
shoes: X-Talon 212

Basically just ran to start from parking
11 AM

Orienteering race 1:51:25 [5] *** 10.55 km (10:34 / km) +425m 8:47 / km
(injured) shoes: X-Talon 212

Had an accident last night and smashed my nose and right hand. Nose was OK in the morning by hand was not - bruised, swollen and looks like it was broken. Well, if I went to see a doc then X-ray and possible plaster cast would ruin champs... Decided just take some medicine and try to run. We will see.

Another disaster happen on 10th - GPS coordinates I set in my in car-navigation software to get to the event lead me to the wrong place! Usually I used description to find closest town/village and go from there. This time I could not so typed in coordinates provided by organizers. Ended up 70 km away from the actual start and we ran late. I got to the start 25 mins late, Alex just 4 mins. He got started straight away but I had to wait for another 25 mins since there were other people running my course. Official said my time would be adjusted.
On a positive side, I started together with Olav Lundanes and wished him luck!

I don't remember I ever had race with 425m of climb so expected it to be tough, only my hand really bothered me, this was a worry.

On the way to first control I stepped on a log and suddenly it split in two and my foot sank in the clearing. The hole was knee-deep and took me couple of minutes to release my foot - I had to untie laces, take off shoe, release my foot, get a shoo from hole and tie laces. A bit of adventure! Had to do that using only left hand.
Continued OK, few wobbles here and there, I was very conservative and picked very safe routes. As I expected, it was very physical, I did not have stamina to run uphills. The biggest error was between 9 and 10 - I did not get up to the road straight after 9 and then had to fight through nasty green and then while I was running on the road I lost map contact and started to doubt if I got off the road in the right place or not. As I found out latter I just undershot a bit. The rest of a distance was mainly walking, I did not have any power to run.

Unfortunately, my result was not adjusted even though I talked to organisers later on again.

shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw 272

Oceania Middle distance champs, Manga Pirau
Okm 3.5, 18controls

My first experience running on sand dunes. It was difficult! You had to be spot-on on control, sometimes I could not see it standing just few meters from it. Pretty happy with my navigation, biggest mistake was 11 where I just undershot few meters, eventially costed me 4 mins. A few wobbles here and there but nothing major. Physically felt 3 out of 5.

Oceania day 2 Osgiliath Wood

Okm 7.8, 23 controls
Still had gastro issue and was not sure till the last minute if I would be able to run. I did run but result was awful.
I started and when I picked up map and looked at it I quickly realised that the direction streamers lead to and 1st control were exactly 90 degrees!
I just turned and went in the right direction which was just wrong!
So, when I could not find first control I was really confused. I reralised what the problem was only after i finished the course - I did not get to start triangle and started navigation thinking I was in the start triangle!
Anyway, tried to forget about it and kept going. I did not feel fresh from the beginning so just tried to concentrate on navigation. It was not too bad until control 5. First off all, I missed clearing which I was going to use to go to 5. Anyway, got to attackpoint and went to 5 from there but it took me ages before I got it! Looking at gps route I still don't understand how I missed it - it goes straight through(or few meters away) control!
After that it felt really disappointed and almost lost motivation. Kept running trying to be conservative which was easy because I was slow. All was good until N14. I don't remember what those trees called (look at the map - from control 13 down to 20 along the shore, marked as light green) but it was a torture going through it. Orcs territory! All teerain around beach was slow to go through with low visibility.

Warm up/down 5:00 [1] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

Orienteering race 1:24:59 [5] **** 10.44 km (8:08 / km) +100m 7:46 / km
(sick) shoes: X-Talon 212

okm 7.2, 18 controls.

First day of Oceania, this was my first bush event since Aus champs.
Surprisingly had a good speed in the beginning considering I had gastro issue day before (lost lots of water) and could not sleep. Two big mistakes spoiled the race, but I had a good sense it was just a beginning and all good staff yet to come.

First was at 4 where I just undershoot slightly and could not catch where I was. But the silliest one was at 11. I crossed road at drinking station thinking I was just 50 meters from controls. To my surprise, I could not find control! It took me 10 mins or so to realise I crossed road at another drinking station!

I was exited to see some big guns warming up and during the race (I saw Daniel Hubmann, Olav Lundanes, Matias Mertz)
Terrain was so different to Australia but so nice! Pine forest is fantastic!
