Orienteering race 1:45:38 [4] *** 9.3 km (11:22 / km)
spiked:10/15c weight:167lbs

ROC Meet at Letchworth. Blew C3 pretty badly, to the tune of 8 or 9 minutes. Came down the hill left of the flag, and went right to find a dry stream junction that I thought was the right location, but no flag, went one way, then the other, no luck. Finally I went farther down the hill and found the network of streams that were mapped and followed the correct one back up the hill to the flag. I then realized the original junction I found consisted of ditches too small to be mapped or visible as contours, and I should have been looking for something bigger.

Fairly smooth sailing the rest of the way, althoug I had a lot of hesitation to C5 (didn't want to miss the trails), had slow going to C6. Missed C11 or so and hit the road, and had to go back, and blew C15 when I was distracted by a flag up the hill in the distance.

Running warm up/down 7:00 [2] 0.78 mi (8:59 / mi)

Some easy jogging to loosen up before the race.

Running 35:00 [2] 4.24 mi (8:15 / mi)

Some easy running during the Hilton Invitational. Included a run down thru the village and out South St and back.

Nate had his first attempt at the Steeplechase, and didn't do too bad. He lost a lot of momentum on each barrier, so he can improve quickly with techinique practice.

Chelsea ran two great 800s. She was shocked that she was in the fast heat in the open 800 (seeded 12th out of about 16 in each heat), then ran like she knew she belonged there, getting out-leaned for the 6th place ribbon in 2:34. She then led off the 4x800 relay and ran the second lap faster to get by all the teams except Hilton and Cicero North, running another 2:34. I think the team held on for 5th, despite missing a top runner.

Running 56:54 [3] 7.72 mi (7:22 / mi)
rhr:41 slept:6.25

Since I'm not going to track practice tonight (I have a much more important sporting event to attend), I was finally able to make it back out to GTA. Small turnout with Erik out of town: Scott, Frank (we had to turn around after his late arrival), JV and Vinny. Shannon and Sue were there for GTAW.

Did a lilac-ish route (which I gmapped, but didn't save), though the true lilac run would be scheduled for next week, during the festival.

Roughly Monroe-Culver-Park-Goodman-Monroe-Alexander-River-McLean-Mt Hope-Highland Park-Highland-Monroe & in. I had no trouble on the first sub-7 pace stretch on Park, but I lost about 20 seconds on Highland, between Clinton and Monroe, when they got down below 6:30 pace.

Running 28:57 [2] 3.48 mi (8:19 / mi)

First run after swimming in ages, so it was a tough go. But the weather was beautiful - 77 degrees and some sun, so I just sat back and enjoyed it.

Golfing 9:00 [1]

After opening with an 11-footer for par on 1, I thought I was ready to play. Think again! 53 was easily my worst score in a few years.

Running intervals 6:25 [4] 1.03 mi (6:14 / mi)
rhr:43 slept:6.5 weight:163.5lbs

Ran a couple of intervals while I was running around before and during the track meet at Irondequoit. Ran hard down St. Paul/Cooper from Pinegrove to the school (3:24 for 0.537 miles = 3:10 1/2 mile pace). Also ran hard on List from the street south of the school to a tree after a street crossing at an angle (3:01 for 0.494 miles = 3:03 pace).

Running 29:00 [2] 3.63 mi (7:59 / mi)

Easy running before, between and after the intervals. Doesn't count all the running around the infield cheering. Chelsea was 2:37 in the open half (the hard way: 82, 75), to finish 2nd behind Megan. She also had the fastest split (2:39) in the 4x800. She would have been 2:37 again, if it weren't for the completely pathetic handoff.

Nate ran tough in the 3200, lowering his time to 11:22 on the first real warm day of the year.

Golfing 9:00 [1]

Skipped the swim at lunch and drove out to spend 30 minutes at the range instead. Not a day to be indoors! Had a 2pm meeting, or I would have stayed and played 9.

Running 26:05 [2] 3.42 mi (7:38 / mi)
rhr:45 slept:6.0 weight:162lbs

Fairly easy run with the distance guys, to the rest rooms at North Ponds and back. I'm not sure, but Marc may have been the only one who made it without stopping, although Patryk did catch back up to us. Not sure why bathroom breaks are needed on an easy 25 minute run. Chris hid, after not even keeping up with Shamus.

Lowest weight in many years, I think. Sharp contrast from hitting 169.5 last week. True weight is definitely somewhere in between.

Running 2:18 [4] 0.41 mi (5:36 / mi)

6 strides.

Orienteering race 2:49:40 [4] *** 12.89 km (13:10 / km) +357m 11:34 / km
spiked:18/25c slept:8.25

US Team Trials Long - Blue. Started out with a decent performance - only about 2 minutes behind JJ after 8 controls. Then back-to-back long legs should have been great for me, but I fouled them up. On the way to C9, I was able to stick with the trails, even though folks had tried to hide them in places, piling up brush (to stop mountain bikers?), until I must not have seen the last right turn that I wanted to get me to my attack point and I had to wander a bit to relocate. Lost 7-8 minutes. Also failed to track the trails leaving C9, and wound up over at the airfield, which was a bit out of the way.

Had another nice stretch, until, suprisingly, the next long leg, to C18. Again it was the green that was my downfall. It took me forever to fight thru to the campground to the east - I never did see the open, scattered trees area that was supposed to be on the way. By the time I got out, both of my shoes needed to be retied, and a couple of O'ers got by me. I had no trouble walking them down on the trails, though. C20 was a disaster - thought I had the correct line, but lost about 8.5 minutes when the flag wasn't past the hill I expected. For C22 I was a victim of the poor mapping they had advertised. I kept getting hung up in medium-to-dark green areas that didn't seem to be mapped that way. The rest was OK, except I was pretty worn out (and I ended up running over 360 degrees around C23).

I definitely need to improve my execution of long legs. They should be an advantage for me, but right now they are hurting me.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.11 mi (9:01 / mi)

Walked to the start to see about an earlier start for Walt, then jogged about halfway back, then jogged most of the way to the start again.
