Orienteering race (middle) 34:25 [3] 5.3 km (6:30 / km) +145m 5:43 / km
shoes: O icebugs 2015

After my recent debacles, I was very careful to always make sure I knew where I was going before running. I.e.Running less hard and navigating more. It paid off with a much more respectable time. I was slow in/out of the control but fairly clean. I was a little off a few and lost a minute on #13 but I can live with that.

Orienteering race (red long COW) 1:34:55 [3] *** 9.5 km (9:59 / km) +260m 8:47 / km
spiked:18/22c slept:8.0 shoes: O icebugs 2015

Overall: I traveled 7.75 miles, quite a bit more than the 9.5K. it would have helped if the "open" was yellower or oranger on the map. It is more like rough open and harder to see on the map in the sunlight.
#1: I cut across the field instead of taking the road and had a faster time.
#2: I can't see the streams on this map. It was very hard to navigate based on them when I can't see them. It didn't help that the circles and lines again hide them. I didn't run very straight to #2 and was slow on the final approach.
#3: Straight.
#4: I drifted a little right.
#5: This is where things started going bad. I was heading north on the clearing when something startled a herd of cows. The entire clearing was full of cows stampeding towards me. There was nothing I could do but head north into the woods to get around them. Apparently I ran through the green but it wasn't green so I didn't realize it. Then another cow with calf cut across my path. The cow look very short tempered and tired like it has been trying to avoid orienteering all day. This caused me to drift further left. I ended up by the dirt wall south west of the control. I couldn't see the pond. I went left up the wrong hill. Eventually I got high enough to see the water and realized I was way off and went to the control.
#6: straight
#7: weaved through the hills some to avoid some climb. hesitant on final approach as i couldn't see the stream. I could see the control from a long way off but didn't think it was mine.
#8: things went bad here again. I was doing ok but was confused. The ditch was full of water so I thought it was a stream but I couldn't find the stream on the map. I was still doing ok until a women stopped me and asked for help. I asked if whe was hurt (she said no) and I said I couldn't help here without her being disqualified. Did she want my help? She got all uppity at me for being mean. It was short conversation but totally through off my run. I lost my train of thought, lost my place on the map, and lost my flow. Instead of going to 8 I thought I was going to 7. The map didn't match up. I floundered. The trails that should have helped were just cow paths and I wasn't sure which were on the map and which weren't. I am not sure where I was (maybe over by control #17). Finally I was bailling out to the main clearing on the west of the map when I was able to relocate off a trail and some rocks ((on the line from 17-18). From there I went to 7 because at this point I wasn't sure what control I had last been to.
#8: again: on the way there I realized I had already been here and this time went to it. I was still a bit west of the control on the final approach.
#9: I drifted right and overshot the control. I ended up on the hill north of the control. where I could see the pond. More time lost.
#10: At this point I stopped trying. There was no sense to run hard I jogged/walked the rest of the course from here. I also stopped trying to use the trails which helped tremendously. I couldn't get through the gate. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to unhook the thing of just bungy/stretch it open and squeeze through (which I did).
#13: I lost more time as they drew the control line right over the small reentrant before control. I pulled up a little short becuase I saw only one reentrant on the map and I was standing in one.
18: Same area as before I I screwed up again. Because I was moving slow. I crossed the first trail and was thinking I was crossing the 2nd trail. When I say the stream and 2nd trail I was very confused. Rather than run on. I just sat there and tried to figure things out.

Orienteering (sprint) 20:54 [5] 2.7 km (7:44 / km)
shoes: Run: Asics Gel Yayano 24

Another sprint. I started off ok but messed up going to 9. I cut around the building and instead of weaving through the small buildings weaved through the unmapped olive green. This put me in a different part of the map than expected and of course things didn't match up. I still maintain the edge of the map area needed to be fixed which added to me confusion. Overall not a good day. I finished last on a sprint. I haven't finished last in a very long time.

Run warm up/down (road) 10:18 [2] 1.0 mi (10:18 / mi)
