Tried one of the Usylingo courses at this old coal mine. Messed up realizing when I was to return and came back way early??! so I didn't complete the course.
It was quite hot, well into the 80s, so even the walk up to the start was a sweat-provoking climb. Cool terrain with a LIDAR map by Greg, that had a very small number of added features and adjustments. Lots of the forest was very open and super runnable. Nav was ok except for 3, which I went to but Usylingo didn't register, so then I wandered trying to figure out how I couldn't be in the right place. I was though; this cliff was one of the weakest that I saw during my run. There was some greenbriar mapped and it was a bit thick on a Kentucky/Indiana standard, and there was some that we wouldn't map (the shreading that you just accept while running). Here, I found even the light briars a bit hard. My legs were burnt from the previous day, there was lots of potential for falling in deep holes, and there was enough rock that getting strung up by the briars and stepping badly put me on the ground. The laurel I just straight-up stayed out of!
I think the map has lots of potential. Unlike some terrains where KP is a long-way towards a functional O map, here it probably needs quite a bit of mapper-love to better interpret some of the features, and add in missing detail. The flatter, less mined parts are good at 1:10 or maybe 1:15, but the mined detail was barely interpretable at 1:10 and I don't think it is an easy fix. There are many knolls and many actual narrow diameter pits --some shallow and some treacherous. But there are also many trenches that would fit 6-8 good sized houses, and are fairly narrow and deep, so tag lines wouldn't work and they have good features within them. Part of me wishes that KP purple was allowed in ISOM standard because it can help to solve this issue. KP sometimes doesn't correctly color up and down, so there were a few pit/hill inversions. Still, if the readability/feature consistency was higher, and I was confident that most of the black Vs/heavy black cliffs were on the map, it would make for a really fun middle.
Nice to see Greg and have real coffee in Scranton; an excellent way to break up the drive home. Camping in eastern PA could make for a fun training week.
