Ok. So I knew that a win was a possibility before I started and that Barber would probably be my biggest competition. If he avoided any big errors I thought he would certainly beat me on speed so the plan was to keep it clean. I had a few problems prior to starting - hamstrings were aching from too much badminton over the past three days and digestion was rather problematic. Tried to resolve these with stretching etc. but was a bit rushed at the start...
1. No problems, ran an almost identical leg in the past.
2. Ok.
3. Caught Laura Daniel who put me off, staying too long on the path and overshooting. 1m 30s
4. Poor route initially trying to avoid climb then ended up too high at some unmarked depressions. 2m
5. Spiked.
6. Ok.
7. Bit hesitant and a bit low. 20s
8. Poor route choice just to avoid initial climb. Very long way around, but I did manage to run all of the way and it brought me to the rides from a good angle. Only 1m down on fastest split but felt like I lost a lot more than this? 1m
9-10. Ok.
11-13. Spiked.
14. Contoured along in the hope that I might not have to climb the hill. I did, and going straight up it rather than diagonally up made it worse. 30s
15-16. Spiked.
17. Saw the northern route quite late but decided to go for it. Bit further but good running all the way. (1m down on fastest 35L split?)
18. Spiked.
19. Hamstrings starting to cramp up. Had to stop for some quick stretching. 20s
20. Bit high but saw the flag. 10s
21. Spiked.
22. Knew this could be tricky but used edge of OOB and thickets to keep me on line.
23. Lost the path in the middle but ok.
24. Slight miss. 10s
25. Bigger miss, relocated off open. 30s
26. Spiked
27. Navigation fine. Hamstrings really suffering now so I couldn't push as I would have liked.
28. Parallel error on ditch hidden under crease in map. Could have been costly. 45s
29-F As fast as I dared.
7m 15s of time loss, of which almost 5m came on Greno. Didn't feel like a winning performance but there were no disasters I guess (and lack of competition with Barber being knackered). Badminton the day before worked out ok, but perhaps is not advisable for the future...
Only problem with winning is that I'll have to do Elite next year as I've always said it should work like football leagues - if you win you get promoted. Fortunately I was relegated from the JK Elite and can do the Long there next year ;)
