Naphill & Park Wood

Frustrating area / run. More often than not it would have been better to pick off more detail rather than sticking to the 'general direction' approach. More planning ahead was also required.

2 min man behind (Shminty) didn’t turn up so expected (and got) a lonely race. Steady but unremarkable start; still at the heady heights of 7th before I started messing about.
#5 Knew I was too far south, but couldn't resist performing a fruitless search of a hole harbouring a different control once I had seen competitors emerging [20]
#6 Not tracking position down the hill; checked north of eastern thicket initially [30]
#10 Poor exit direction (not planning ahead). Green was quite dense here so compounded error (exiting south) by going all the way out to the northern path rather than using white corridor [100]
#11 Dithering around finding a decent line, then overshot control (crossed wall) inexplicably [30]
#12 Went round path as it was ‘safe’ but straight approach was probably actually easier... [20]
#15 Loss of concentration due to road crossing; spotted open patch and headed for it, but it was the one to the south (rather than north) of the control... Bounced off path! [45]
#16 Detoured east to avoid darker green for worse runnability... [20]
#17 Slow to recognise need to climb, then overshot hole down the hill [25]
#18 Hesitant; looking for platform... [10]
#19 Planned to stay high then follow the bank down into the flag. Unfortunately there was a vague (unmapped) bank much earlier along the slope (before the first patch of green) which I mistook for the mapped one. No control at the bottom meant I realised this, so carried on north. At this stage the error was not too severe. However, a short distance further on there was an area of broken ground with a control. This had to be the mapped pit, north of the control, so went back south, rather puzzled now. Still (unsurprisingly) no control; went beyond to check distance to fence corner and recognised from distance that it must be even further north, which it was... Broken ground unmapped; control on clearing [2min 20s]
#20 Blundering now. Found control on bank and mistakenly went further NE initially before rectifying [25]
#21 Went in too early, bounced off large depression, but then ended up north of the control somehow [20]
#23 Mistook ‘hedge’ for hatchings; overshot [10]
#24 Slow line through green mid leg [20]
#25 Roundabout route to south, overshot cut in off path near end of leg [30]
#26 Insufficiently direct route, then looking early not able to fit map [60]
Nobody to race / not worth busting a gut on the dead running to the end!

Stopped off at Old Moor on the way back from work for a bit of variety in running location and also to ensure that I got out prior to evening commitments.
Bit of an accidental progression run - mainly becuase I gradually felt better as the run continued.

Day 3 'Classic' Headless Hill / High Meadow

Excellent course in some beautiful terrain the perfect end to a fantastic weekend of O - the area is in great condition at the moment. (Shame about my run).

#3 Loopy contour route from path junction - bearing better [25]
#4 Massive detour to south for worse running (?) [75]
#5 Drifted west to path [15]
#6 Headed into the wood, but it was very rocky so decided to revert to the open [10]
#9 No way of knowing, but the control was so far down the re-entrant that dropping to the main track straight away then climbing back up would have been quicker [25]
#10 Used track, unnecessary (but safe?) [10]
#12 Slow progress in first section of wood, then again curring through rough open (a little high). Not sure whether climbing to the top track was quicker? [60]
#15 Distracted, missed path turning. Then attacked too early as mapped green wasn't really there, bounced off feature above [30]
#19 Recognised control on stream source, but looking too low on slope for quite some time [80]
#20 No plan, just trying to run well up the hill. Too high up spur, tried but failed to interpret veg boundaries. Relocated on crag next to knoll, rough bearing did not yield any results. Reattacked and saw possible rock feature to my right which turned out to be hiding the flag. Something not quite right with the map here, but a better initial plan would have saved most of this time loss [4mins]
#22 Not paying attention; drifted high to path [30]

10th of 46 (+4), 10mins down on Romualdas.
